First time- Koutokuzan, originally from the Philippines, came to Japan when he was 12.

Returning:

Abi, back after four basho

Yago, back after two basho.

Kaishou, back after 9 bashos

I bet the Abi suspension has left a bitter taste in Tochimaru's mouth- 10 full years in sumo, 4-3 at Ms2e, never made sekitori.

In both cases, specially in Shiba's one, this might have been their last chance. Neither looks like  " if not now, then surely next time..." kind of rikishi.

I would be more sympathetic to Tochimaru's plight if he hadn't gone 4-3 for so many basho. While kachikoshi should equal promotion, just making the mark like that isn't going to sell the banzuke makers to promote him over more successful rikishi.

Out of the 42 rikishi who have gone 4-3 between ms2 and ms5 since 2018 january, 47% of them have been promoted.

So Tochimaru is pretty unlucky to lose 3 coin flips in a row.

This is pretty much what I always think when someone ends up with bad banzuke luck.  Only one person has ever had bad banzuke luck after winning all their matches.

There was a time at a job where I wasn't getting promoted even though I met all the marks. The company kept picking people below me. My dad gave me great advice that applies to Tochimaru. "You gotta give them a reason to promote YOU." Everyone was just meeting the marks. I had to excel at something, not just check boxes and wait my turn. I put in time to memorize the menu, got noticed, and moved up. 4-3 is meeting the marks. A guy two ranks below him that goes 6-1 is going to blow by him every time.

What a tale of woe!  He had the highest rank to be stopped at Ms1 after a 7-0.  Others rising from Ms16-Ms18 include Abi (his second time up to Juryo), Kisenosato (from Ms18), and Wakatakakage (from Ms17).  All those rikishi kept rising, of course, but this guy, after a Yusho from Ms15TD, never reached that high again -- bitter!

Looking through his record, I find an unusual 6-1 Y at Ms13 in January 2016.  He beat Takakeisho, Kotoeko and Ura (twice, once in a playoff).  This got him to M5w, but he withdrew from the next basho.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that TD Ms rikishi were not eligible for Juryo after their first basho.

That might explain it.  He's the only one of eight Ms15 Yusho winners not to proceed to Juryo.

I remember that Shimoda incident. According to what was said at the time,  a Yusho from Ms15 upwards should be rewarded with a Juryo promotion, but it was and still is a common practice that a kachi-koshi should get a promotion (except Komusubi and above), so they had a 5-2 Kanbayashi at makushita's highest rank, Ryuo right behind him at 4-3,  and Shimoda with 7-0 at ms15TD but just two spots in Juryo. It would have been rough, but they could have dropped Ryuo. Instead they decided that ms15 Tsukedashi were not inside the ms15 bracket so Shimoda was passed for promotion and retired almost a decade later without ever getting there.

Oh, this was shocking to me. I never ever question which heya shikona starting with "Koto" are from. But I just saw that the kanji is different. Dang.

Mugi was one of 2 Arashio-heya’s cats.
