He clearly didn't want to go chest-to-chest with Terunofuji and did what he could to disrupt his sumo. I get it - you do what you can to win - but that won't go down in my books as one of his most glorious senshuraku victories. Yeah, it wasn't pretty sumo, but considering Hakuho came back from a year's layoff and knee surgery a zensho is a ridiculously good result. The slow mo even catches his version of the Takanohana oni face coupled with a double fist shake.

Rocks 1,807 Posted July 18, 2021 Ugly sumo from Hakuho but he deserves it. I hope Terunfuji's arm isn't hurt bad.

since_94 650 Posted July 18, 2021 Excellent finish. Tempting to say Hakuho has silenced his critics, but that would be naive, since they will never be silenced. He’s been too controversial, his age and injuries notwithstanding. All that remains to see is which road he takes: retire while on top, with 45 yusho including yet another zen yusho, or say “See you in September”.

pricklypomegranate 730 Posted July 18, 2021 His calm was what won Terunofuji those 14 victories. But today, he really lost his composure and that's what cost him the yusho. Whatever the case, it wasn't aesthetically pleasing sumo. Everyone's happy. Hak gets his 45th with a zensho and gets to retire, but the need for a new yokozuna is apparent, and that's Terunofuji. Which is somewhat understandable, he sat out a lot of tournaments and when he came back, he beat the one really serious contender by trickery. I don't agree, but there will be detractors. I still agree he is the best ever.
nagora 88 Posted July 18, 2021 (edited) I wonder if he said "boop" when he touched Terunofuji's nose at the start. Good effort from Teruno, and from Shodai before that. Shodai fighting well is almost more annoying than him fighting poorly. You almost get the impression that he's aiming for 8-7. I support Hakuho and even I don't agree that was good sumo. But it fits into his narrative and personality, that will to win and dominate, which is the reason why I support him in the first place. It would have been even more heartbreaking had Terunofuji's promotion actually depended on this bout. But I think we all agree that getting here with a 14-0 ensures him the rope already, so the bout wasn't as high-stakes as it could have been.

Since before the basho I've pretty much assumed that he'll make his goodbye appearance in Tokyo if Nagoya isn't a total bust, but frankly the way he has acted all basho long I'm leaning towards retirement before Aki basho now.
hakutorizakura 590 Posted July 18, 2021 Man, this basho proves that Hakuho will stop at nothing to assert his goatness on the dohyo. Now, please retire while you're still up there, don't wait for things to get uglier, tend to your kids and grow some carrots or something. Otsukaresamadeshita Terunofuji.
dcisneros 4 Posted July 18, 2021 Hakuho did a very good basho despite his ugly sumo. However, this is sports.
pricklypomegranate 730 Posted July 18, 2021 Is Isegahama going to give Hakuho the trophy? Will he "accidentally" bonk him with the yusho or the flag?

His JY was only fixed after a bout with Hakuho himself, and not mathematically certain before that, so he was in the yusho race all the way. Ha, this will be awkward, Isegahama as shimpanbucho presenting a prize to Hakuho.
Athenayama 953 Posted July 18, 2021 My interpretation of Hakuho's scream as Terunofuji fell down. (Scream of relief and all the pressure gone) "This was my last bout, I showed everyone who I am, I'm leaving you with a zensho!" I might be wrong.
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted July 18, 2021 (edited) Is that Hakuho's wife and kids in the audience they keep focusing on? I thought at first they were Terunofuji supporters from the teariness but I could be wrong. EDIT: Yes, they are - confirmed by the NHK broadcast, as well as the Hakuho towel waving. Previously only his wife, eldest son, and youngest daughter were shown, so it wasn't clear, but they later showed the whole family in the masu box (two, judging by the look of it).
