Nagoya Basho 2021

Recommended Posts

Shimazuumi gets an 8th match in Makushita for the second time this year; the previous time being in Hatsu when he was called Nakazono.  The 8th match for someone in Makushita was necessary due to Kyokutaisei's Day 14 withdrawal meaning there was one less sekitori available than initially planned.

what is the longest gap between 14-0 senshuraku showdowns?  i'm thoroughly enjoying this basho.

Maybe Hakuho did it to play the heel, so that the YDC will unanimously approve the face Terunofuji for promotion?

No mention so far on the Ura v. Meisei bout.

Looked as though Meisei tried to dispatch Ura as quickly as possible, but Ura's back flexibility kept him in the ring and the bout.  Then when both men struggled to get a grip on their opponent's belt, Ura seemed to have the arm-length advantage, locked on to Meisei's mawashi and powered Meisei out as though Meisei was still in Juryo rather than Sanyaku.

One of the best bouts I've seen Ura fight resorting to yorikiri, and I think he felt the same way!  Great return to Makuuchi for him.

He has Chiyoshoma tomorrow for a shot at a double-digit record.

Not that it means anything really, but note that in four of the five historical cases it was the junior-ranked rikishi that won it. Only Taiho’s March 1964 win was won by the senior Yokozuna. The only one to involve an Ozeki – also the most recent, incidentally – was won by the Ozeki. A portent or what’s to come tomorrow?

Hakkaku on Hakuhou today: "A surprise attack is usually done by a weak person. A Yokozuna with so many yushos should not be doing that. " The fans did not like it and apparently voiced their indignance  via sign language, or should i say sigh language.

Hakkaku on Terunofuji : "He was very patient and did not lose his balance. He stood his ground well and the difference (between him and Takayasu) in leg strength was obvious."

Terunofuji needs to win the yusho ! If Hakuho would zensho tomorrow, he‘d have 16 zensho out of 45 yusho, that‘s a big no no… So he needs to come back in september and win the cup without zensho, to retire on a perfect 15/45 :-D

no shukun-sho

Kanto-sho: Tamawashi and Kotonowaka

Gino-sho: Ura and Hoshoryu

All conditional

After Hakuho's antics today, I hope even more that Terunofuji wins tomorrow.

Given the events of the last few days, the following is a cold stone lock for tomorrow's bout: a Hakuho henka.

History supports the notion that Terunofuji is the more likely to henka in crucial matches. ;-)

OH! OH! MAYBE WE WILL GET A DOUBLE HENKA!?!?!? It's like double rainbow but waaaay more fun.

I always hope for something that has almost happened on a few occasions: a quick double-henka to the same side, resulting in the rikishi knocking each other out.

This was a clear message from Hakuhou to Terunofuji. "Expect the unexpected." Hakuhou is a mind-game master. At his status and at this point in his career in his "do or die" basho (hahaha for that..) he feels he can piss from the diving board. I don't believe his knee is in worse condition than it was at the beginning of the basho. He looks relaxed, maybe too relaxed. Doing what he did today at this stage of the basho demands a lot of cool.  I didn't notice any sort of limp after his bout, BTW. Watch him at his best tomorrow, and probably lose. Personally, I don't think he's a match for Terunofuji at present. You know what? I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't show up tomorrow, citing an injury.

I would agree that Hakuho was sending a message but not the message you suggest. Hakuho may be a mind game master but he has a terrible poker face. Just get a look of him when  Terunofuji wins. Hakuho had something in mind but he doesn't decide to go with it until the moment he realizes he won't have the one win cushion he was hoping for.

Hakuho pulled that tachiai today to give the impression most people, even officials, got. Which is that his knees are bothering him and he's weak and can't move well so Terunofuji should go hard at him. I would agree with you that Hakuho probably can't beat Terunofuji right now and I think Hakuho thinks that too.

I expect Hakuho will pull a Harumafuji Special tomorrow.  Will the  Isegahama boy be ready for it?

Obligatory trivia addition: the unpaired 14-0's.

I wondered how you did that query but I see that you were cheating. B-)

Not cheating, just not showing all the work. ;-)

Edit: Although this works.

Indeed it's not, this is the pic I managed to find

Whenever I see this it reminds me of a joke from an old Irish sitcom about how only priests socks are actually black and normal people's socks are just very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue.
