Nagoya Basho 2021

I am becoming more convinced by Hosh the last 2 basho. He carried his success up to sanyaku level opposition last basho, showing he can beat the elite (many solid maegashira are pretty much locked into losses vs ozeki; he beat the first 2 he faced), and he's displaying more consistency this basho than previously. He's also at the top of rikishi in his age range, and shows a lot of versatility as well as the ability to quickly adjust to his opponent's approach.

My issue with him mostly to date has been that he can look great winning, and get everyone lauding his talent, but then take uninspiring losses to opponents worse than the ones he's been beating, as if he doesn't get fired up or focused enough if the task doesn't seem as tough..

Yeah, today's beautiful shitatenage against Wakatakakage's seemingly stronger uwate grip really showed his potential. Chiyonofuji-esque, I thought.

I think his inconsistency is mainly a product of his youth and relative inexperience. Barring serious injury, Hoshoryu is going to improve with age.

The two leaders impressed me in different ways today. Has Isegahama had a quiet word with Terunofuji? That was the exact opposite of his usual dame-oshi today...
I liked how Hakuho was totally unmoved by Chiyotairyu, like a two-ton boulder sitting in the middle of the dohyo. Bit of a dame-oshi at the end there, but it was a gentle one. Reminded me of what our QEII does after honouring someone: she exchanges a few words, shakes their hand and gently pushes them away...

I got to say, I'm so glad Hakuho is back. It's such a treat to watch him. Despite all the injuries he could seriously go on to wrestle at the top level for a long, long time if he wanted to.

At the same time, it's a boss move to be able to retire while still getting nakabi kachikoshi, instead of doing so out of necessity because you're losing every bout.

I don't think it's been ever done before, but the ultimate boss mic drop would be retiring on a zensho.

I kinda expect that, if he doesn't get the Olympics participation. If he gets into the Olympics, I think he's going to show up in September just for the optics.

I kind of expect he'll show up anyway just for the optics, but this is the sort of question that lends itself to polls.

I don't know if makes sense to "love" one stable, but I'm always happy to see the Kokonoe guys win, no matter who. I always liked Chiyotaikai when he was wrestling, and to me, at least, any success from his pupils is a success for him. Talking about two of his sekitori, looks like Chiyotairyu and Chiyosoma are going opposite directions: the first has completely forgotten to follow with nice tsuppari after his trademark cannonball tachiai, something he did quite well not so long time ago. He's just charging, then pulling, again and again. OTOH, I feel truly delighted with Chiyosoma's "new" style. After coming back to Makuuchi, he's just doing straightforward sumo, using of course his typical bag of tricks, but doing nice sumo on the belt. And his henkas have diminished greatly. I hope he can keep it up.

Thank you, Chiyoshoma, for proving me wrong xD. I appreciate it.

He never said he was going to stop, you know. He only said he was going to try to KK earlier so he wouldn't have to henka so often...

That's 2 so far this basho, isn't it? I don't keep track, so I don't know if that's above or below average for him.

No, he said he will try to stop. Nothing about getting a KK earlier being connected to that. He just said he wanted to get a KK earlier.. Hmm.. you think it was connected? I'll have to watch that again.

Upon further review, I may be wrong there. "Everyone has something to hide except for me and my monkey." Rennon Oyakata.

Very true.  But I fear that a zensho yusho will only encourage Hakuho to stay on in September and beyond.  After all, there have already been rumblings to that effect.

Interesting.  The original was "everybody's got something to hide..."  I guess the Japanese version of him felt the "got" was not needed, as indeed it is not if you don't use the contraction for "has".

(Also one of my favorite songs that never really did much in the wider world.  A lot of the album is like that though.  I suggest that it might be because it was their only album my parents had on CD, so I heard them way more than anything else.  I now own almost of them since Rubber Soul.)

I only have your word on what Chiyoshoma said, but I just watched it again, and what I posted above is what your translation says he said...

Sad.

I think part of the reason why younger generations might not recognize the picture is because so many people have adopted the look since his death it's become generic.

Indeed. I just didn't feel there was a connection between the two sentences Now I'm not sure.

I thought I had a pretty good idea of the rules of this game; then I watched the Abi fiasco tonight....

Before the tournament began, I expected Abi to be the talk of the town ... in a Juryo yusho way.  But today's "fiasco" as you termed it drove home the fact that Abi is injured and no longer able to fire on all cylinders.  He is doing a pretty good job at hiding things in terms of holding back grimaces of pain and not limping in too pronounced a fashion.

I had to leave for work when his regulation bout against Sadanoumi ended, but with not one but two monoii being called, I couldn't tear myself away.

The gyoji referee seemed hellbent to hand Abi that all-important 8th win, but the ringside judges weren't buying what he was selling.  Calling a torinaoshi after the regulation bout was a gift to Abi, IMHO.  Isegahama put his sandalled-foot down the second time.

But two straight losses for Abi is definitely worrying.  As Kinta-sama has already suggested, Abi is waiting for his critical kachikoshi before he withdraws to lick his wounds.  Avoiding the inevitable demotion out of the salaried ranks is pretty strong incentive!  Abi has 6 more chances to snag his ticket to security.  The watch is officially on.

Umm... you see... T-Rex are on topic because... they walk on 2 legs...

They are neither oshi or yotsu specialist... but great at feet stomping... I think...

Forum favourite Shonanzakura Jonokuchi 24w (22 y.o.) reached an ignominious milestone in Nagoya: 100 straight losses.  That takes some doing, or should I say "not doing"?

Shonanzakura's stable master, Shikihide, who is known for supporting wrestlers without oodles of promise, gave a gem of a comment to the press: "There are no flowers that don't bloom."

Pretty appropriate then that in Japan there's an orchid that apparently never blooms.
