You know what I just remembered … didn’t Asanoyama quit drinking? What’s he going out to bars for? Or was that just during the honbasho?

Sumo's intolerance of rogues and punks was what first converted me away from the sports I used to watch (football, baseball, etc). Even so, Asanoyama would be a grievous loss.

Hostess bars aren't just for drinking. You get to sit with a girl and she has to be your bestie for a while. Not my thing but I tried it and hated it.

Partially because I spoke about no Japanese at the time and her English was worse.

The really cheap ones were more fun but still awful

. Takakeisho will become the next Japanese prayer for a yokozuna, Shodai will continue to limp his ozeki career along one more basho, and we'll all learn what the Kyokai does with an ozeki that screws up this badly.

I'm sorry but I just tried to picture Takaken$ho doing the dohyō-iri and wow that would be hilarious.

I've been thinking this a while, it's a small part of why I want it to happen.

A friend posed an interesting question.

If Asanoyama were to intai, would he be able to take the Takasago stock due to ex-Asashio IV's deal with Asasekiryu? Can't be right? Because either Asanoyama hasn't accumulated enough basho and the NSK isn't gonna let him land a cushy job after his transgression.

If it really were through, ex-Asanowaka would be pissing himself laughing. Totally dodged a bullet there.

I know. I dated a girl who worked in one for a while. But generally you drink at the same time.

There’s no problem with the number of basho; once you’ve had one in sanyaku you qualify. He’s also had more than 20 in Makuuchi too, so he meets the requirements twice over. Theoretically, as an Ozeki he’s entitled to stay on for three years without a kabu, but I imagine if you retire in disgrace there’s probably some rule—official or unofficial—that says you’re out of the Kyokai for good.

True. But you didn't have to, strictly speaking. The girls generally drank tea or very watered down drinks. Some of us did the same. Not me, I needed all the ill-gotten confidence I could obtain at the time. I was quite young.

Still nothing on the NSK website about his kyujo. Very odd.

I checked the time, I guess it's not that odd.

That's why the press releases about newly kabufied rikishi always read "Today's board of directors meeting approved the assumption of ABC-kabu by XYZ-rikishi (etc.)", including temporary kabu. No automatism about it. I bet I'm missing somebody obvious, but I'm struggling to think of anybody since Maedayama in the 1940s who was pressured to retire and got to continue in the Kyokai anyway.

On the upside, if Asanoyama is indeed forced to leave sumo permanently over this, then ex-Asasekiryu will be the one laughing to the bank, as he has the heya till retirement. Unless some Tatsunami-level shit happens between him and ex-Asashio.

Closest I can think of would be Sokokurai who of course was reinstated after the gambling scandal and is now an Oyakata. But obviously on paper his record is unblemished, so it’s hardly the same.

Has any Ozeki been forced to sit out a number of bashos before? I remember Asa etc.. but Ozeki ? Asanoyama seems to me like someone with weak mental resolve. He's not Abi. I don't see him falling from grace and working his way up from Juryo or whatever. He's out. The only thing that can save him is if he only gets a very light suspension for a basho or two, which I don't see happening, but who knows. Otherwise. In- tie.

I haven't been to one, but as I have heard it told, the drinking is the profit driver.  Have you heard anyone say "no thanks, I'll just have the snacks?"

There haven’t been that many rikishi suspended before, have there?

A whole bunch were in the wake of the Kotomitsuki gambling scandal. Goeido and Shohozan were some of the notables suspended then, although of course Goeido was still hiramaku at the time. IIRC that was the one where Hakuho also had to apologise for betting on hanafuda games played with his fellow rikishi during jungyo, although that was more like party betting rather than the organised sport betting (and yakuza connections) that Kotomitsuki was guilty of.

Shibatayama: "At first he denied it but then during the second questioning he admitted it. It's a scandal, violating the virus protocol like that. His Oyakata has him under "house arrest". As for his lying, no comment at the moment."

Six were suspended at that time, which is not that many in the grand scheme of things. Among them was former Ozeki Miyabiyama; that may be the closest we get to an Ozeki suspended.

Indeed.. We had Touki and Kyokutenhou suspended for driving infractions as well. Touki hit a woman, IIRC and I usually don't RC.

Toki even killed the woman in question. It still gobsmacks me that he had a career after that.
