Asanoyama caught violating COVID restrictions

What made Asanoyama admit to his misdeeds, after the first questioning on the 18th, wasn't the fact that Bunshun had come out with photos on the 19th. He was questioned again on the 19th after the Bunshun article broke, and in the presence of a NSK lawyer this time. The lawyer went: if you're innocent, submit your phone for checking - particularly location history. And that damned him, because the location history matched the dates and times in the Bunshun report. That's when Asanoyama knew the jig was up and confessed.

People consistently forget that the technology they love to use can also be turned against them. Location history is a great tool for investigations; no wonder the NSK's lawyer went down that path (if presumably to be absolutely sure of where Asanoyama was, if they decided to take legal action against Bunshun).

If you really don't care about your privacy, by all means, leave location history on, but know that your phone will give up a lot of information about you, should it be needed to.

Out of reacts for now; thanks for the replies. But was Mienoumi rejected by the board themselves, or was it more a case of his shisho just refusing to let him quit like Terunofuji's case?

I assume this referred to mid-1977 where he was kadoban twice after putting up a string of mediocre KKs post-return from ozekiwake.

Just checked January 1981 issue of Sumo World (article re Mienoumi's retirement), Mienoumi did indeed ask his oyakata to allow him to retire but Dewanoumi Oyakata (ex-Sadanoyama) first consulted Kasugano Rijicho (ex-Tochinishiki) who said to give him another chance.  Next time out Mienoumi got 10 wins.

Really goes to show that most people don't really think too much about how much data gets collected about us by our own devices. Even with location history turned off, unless you activate flight mode, your phone is constantly making network connections that could potentially be used to track you (albeit with considerably more difficulty—this is how some Capitol Hill rioters were tracked for example). But yeah, if he has his location history turned on it's pretty easy. What a thing to throw away your career for.

This reminds me of a friend of mine who's very privacy minded and always turns off his phone's location history. His girlfriend suspected he might be cheating on her and turned it back on so she could follow his whereabouts. When he found out she did, the lack of faith was so shocking to him that it was enough to cause a breakup. (Drippingsweat...)

Wow. That said, with that lack of trust, not sure it's healthy to a relationship either, so perhaps it was for the best in the long run.

By the way, I hope we're gonna get more news on this soon now that the tournament is over. Maybe they'll wait another day or so while we're still on that post-tournament high, but then I'm hoping things are gonna start moving...

They already said nothing more till they meet in June to discuss it. Unless Asanoyama retires we won't be hearing much.

They are saying his punishment will be decided in June, probably, as no one seems to be in a hurry. Maybe they are waiting for things to cool down and maybe another scandal will help us forget this one.

In short, put Asanoyama in as O2w on GTB, and pray for blanked spot solution should he decide to retire after all. Although the messages from his dad and koenkai suggest that that's not the immediate thought right now.

O2w, surely?

Oh yes, my bad. I got E/W mixed up because Asanoyama was on the right in my mind.

I feel like letting the rikishi post on social media would make it easier for oyakata to keep tabs on them, but I guess it just means they care more about not looking like rules are being broken than actually policing it.

My bad. Skimmed through the topic too quickly when I read up.

He didn't break any laws, he "only" violated NSK decrees, but first and foremost: he lied into his superior's face, and that's the sword in his belly.

Why can't the NSK adopt two options: (A) sword in the belly, and (B) lop [or lob!] off the tip of the pinkie.  If Yakuza can't fire a pistol without their pinkie finger, just imagine how missing a pinkie would affect a rikishi's ability to fight on the belt!

Apologies.  I deal with tragedy through humour, even if it is both inappropriate and too early... (Weeping...)

I certainly hope people realize you're joking.  However, I think you meant to write "lop off".  I had this image of a pinkie being lobbed in the air and caught by a member of the NSK.

I was joking indeed.  I had hoped people would pick up on the "through humour" bit. ;-)

Last update on this sad affair for a bit, also courtesy of Herouth: Shibatayama was interviewed a few days ago and asked about the Asanoyama situation. He said the investigations were not trivial and therefore it was unlikely that they would be completed in time for the board meeting on the 27th.

So as originally projected, it'll be June before we hear anything.

I need to read more carefully. I breezed through your comment and then thought, "Why does a yokozuna need to shoot guns at all?" Only on a second read did I realize my public school education not prepare me for the rigors of the Sumo Forum.

Well, oyakata isn't that far away from oyabun, is it? At least to a Westerner. And yokozuna/yakuzuna, who can tell one from the other? I can't for sure. And I'm a yaochozuna ;-)

One could always have asked Taiho and Kashiwado I suppose!

Only if they snatch the airborne pinkie out of the air with chopsticks.

Can Asanoyama intentionally get infected with the virus and quarantined in a monastery without internet access as his punishment?   Or is that too cruel and unusual?  ;-)
