Dog names and the rikishi

Recommended Posts

So, I nearly threw this into a discussion on natsu on the Honbasho discussion but figured it wasn't really pertaining to the basho.

My wife, who is a mild sumo fan at this point, watches highlights with me quite often now. While watching any of her favorites, she loves to interject about nearly any given wrestler,

"Wouldn't that be a great dog name?"  (insert Enho, Abi, Midorifuji...)

I always think, and sometimes say, "The rikishi might not feel so honored, having a dog named after them," as dogs are not as widely revered in Asia as in some other parts of the world.

When she first noticed Wakatakakage, she turned to me and said, "Wow, you could get three dog names out of that!"

Maybe someday, we'll be foolish enough to get three pups from one litter...

Dog names are best when short.  Even dogs that make best of show at Crufts or Westminster and have names like Torums Scarf Michael are still called "Mick" by their owners.  So to go along with Abi (great name for an Akita), may I suggest Roga or Endo/Enho? Or even Oho.  But since dogs seem to react better to names that end in the ee sound, maybe Shishi or Oki.  Shoot, why not go for a name already chosen by thousands of owners: Yuki ?

[Our own dog is a rare black Pomeranian with spiky hair around his head, like an anime character.  We named him Kiku]

Not specially a dog name, but a weird coincidence:
I had twin sons a little more than a year ago, and we gave them the hungarian versions of the originally hebrew name: "Samu" and "Ábris" (the first is short for Samuel the second is a nickname for Abraham). And sometimes we call our son Ábris, 'Ábi' - which is simply just too close to Abi the rikishi. They don't look alike at all (I mean my son, and Abi), also, I can't agree with Abi's life choices, but damn, he has a great shiko! We always have a great smile about this with my wife.

And now, back to your initial story:

Can you imagine Waka, Taka and Kage as the three little ducklings in the japanese version of Ducktales? (Damn, I laughed so hard, when I first read your wife's comment about his shikona)

She wasn't a dog but I gave her a Rikishi name - my rat was called * Toki *, she also had such a beautiful beard and loved to fight. :-D

1) rats and dogs with shikona

2) samurai meatballs

3) name the nameless female spectator

... and this is during the basho!

If you want your purebred registered with the American Kennel Club, your dog must have the only name ever registered using that name. The first name is usually the name of the kennel the dog came from and the second and third names are used somewhat foolish sounding to make sure that no dog has ever registered that name. Then, of course, you call the dog by the name you really want him to have. :-) We used to own a Norwegian Elkhound show dog...Sommerri PTL Saint. It was unique to the AKC, and we called our dog Saint, which is what we wanted to name him all along. Damn, he was the best second place dog in the Elkhound breed in every show that we entered him in! :-)

So the best option would be Shiraishizakura.
