Preparations of the masses- Natsu 2021

Takanoshou was working on his lower body after narrowly getting his kachikoshi after going 6-7. "I think I need to work on my lower body more, otherwise it will not be good.. I felt that during the basho.."

Daieishou faced some sekitori at his own heya today, going at it seriously. "I had about 20 bouts today. as usual, I have been doing truly good keiko! I still need to have more ability and better stability. My power is still lacking as well., ' said. He has started studies as an undergraduate at Nichidai, although it's mostly remote because of Corona. He has been discussing his master's thesis and did some introductory rounds. "I'm slowly getting used to this, but i still have a long way to go. As I can't go out to train or to study,  I need to use my time wisely. Terunofuji Ozeki? As long as I go out there, I will try to leave a good record and aim upwards. I want to reach Sekiwake for now. Many people will be watching on TV for the first three days and I'm sure the fans will fill the seats from day 4 on. I want to gambarize and properly show good sumo!" he declared.

Wakatakakage faced his bother Wakamotoharu from Juryo for 20 bouts today. He was 10-5 in Haru at M2 and still didn't make sanyaku due to bad banzuke luck. "Whatever.. I feel I need to face it properly. The banzuke has been announced and it gives me a feeling of tension.. " he said. Last basho, he beat Shoudai and Takakeishou. "I wouldn't go as far as to say that I'm used to it, but I can say I am not nervous facing them and can go against them with all my might. I want to do my own sumo all the way and aim for kachikoshi," he also said.

Ura declares that he is a minimalist. "I had too much stuff I didn't need. So from around last April, i only have what I really need after getting rid of the rest. I studied about minimalism on the Internet and found it to my liking. I took a good look at what I really needed. I don't have to put everything in order," he said. Now, he has his  clothes and the bare necessities. Five tee-shirts, chosen carefully, so he has cut down on time wasted deciding what to wear and on cleaning up.  Every thing has its place. "What used to be a messy room is no more," he explained. He sold his books to a second- hand store and started reading E-books instead. "It's a plus for my sumo as well. I have a clear day routine now. I have more time for myself," he added. He now weighs 143 kilos. "Last time I was in Makuuchi my body couldn't follow through. I don't want to boast, but I feel I'm much stronger now. I feel I replaced the things I've lost with other things," he added. Less acrobatic and more powerful, explains the reporter.  He knows he needs to add more weight, but it's not easy for him. "I'm really jealous of people who enjoy eating a lot. Due to my injuries, I have no choice but to eat a lot and that is the only reason for my weight increase.. If it were up to me, I would lose weight," he summed.

Nothing about training.

Well, THIS was an interesting interview...nothing about gambarize, to aim for the yusho, doing things properly and that stuff. After this, I like Ura even more.

And don't forget "do my own brand of sumo"

They probably tell them to write it down and memorize it as a PR statement.

Kind of like Bull Durham "I'm just happy to be here, hope I can help the ball club".

Living in a heya you’d think rikishi would be pretty minimalist already. How much stuff could he have possibly had?

143 kg for a 172 cm rikishi doesn't seem so bad, right? He is already much heavier than other small and fast wrestlers like Endo, Ishiura or Terutsuyoshi.

He has already increased his weight by 27% from its 2015 debut. Obviously, a higher weight will help his sumo become less acrobatic and "risky", but after a certain limit, he will get into the category where his weight could start to have a negative impact on his joints, especially if it is a weight that he acquired relatively quickly and did not have at the time of his growth.

Does he really need to get bigger? Can he keep his great speed and explosiveness by exceeding 150 kg? What do you think?

Any news about Takayasu? He didn't show, as he usually does, on the training sessions. I guess he hasn't overcome yet the upset from last basho :/

I suspect his weight gain played a part in that first injury. He took on quite a bit after entering makunouchi while still doing good acrobatic sumo. I already found that worrisome back then.

I went to go check out any news about Takayasu but ended up reading this article about Hoshoryu instead.

Hoshoryu is doing keiko for the last basho from the heya in tsukuba-mirai city. 'The final basho has come so, I want to unleash all my strength' he said eagerly. 'Since I've entered its all I've known. Its good to be closer to the 'gikan, but for me I liked the heya at Tsukuba.'

Tsukuba mountain (877 meters) is an hour drive away by car. 'When I became sekitori, I climbed it. Once a month I go. It causes memories of long ago to float into my head. Tsukuba has a lot of places that are similar to Mongolia. I wanna move here'

There's something tall near his new heya location - Tokyo Skytree (634 meters). 'Yeah but Sky Tree isn't a mountain!' he laughed.

'When I look at the banzuke, I get nervous/excited, can't the basho start soon? My body also trembles.' About advice from Asashoryu-uncle 'He doesn't give advice but said 'your tachiai is too sweet', so I concentrated on my tachai.' He also said to promise more PROPER actions.

Kachikoshi is the goal. 'I wanna start soon! If I can dismantle the joi, it'll be good.'

Akua tells us he was involved in another rear end car accident during last basho. "It happened on day two. I was startled. I barely made it to the dohyo iri..," he said. Last November,  he was involved in a collision on the way from his heya to the Kokugikan. He was waiting for the lights to change at one of the highways' exits when someone in a dump-car rear-ended him and he was diagnosed with whiplash. This time, he was rear-ended as he was leaving the toll booth. "I was in the middle of the highway, the guy came from the left and seemed to be in a hurry.. He had no insurance and no car-checkup. One misfortune after another for me.. And I had just bought a new car after the last accident.." he said. Damage? 600000 yen (approx $6000). He was sitting in the back seat so he bore the brunt of the hit, spraining his cervical vertebrae, but he soldiered on and was 8-7 last basho and is now back in Makuuchi. "Funny thing is I got kachikoshi in both bashos where I was involved in an accident. Maybe those hits were good. Now I just want to catch up to my heyamates Meisei and Houshouryuu, " he summed.

Meisei is aiming for sanyaku, tying his highest rank so far-Maegashira 2E. "I want to properly be strong and believe in my own sumo and if I manage to go all out for the 15 days, I'll be good.. I feel very strongly about making it to Sanyaku.," he said. He now has a personal trainer. "I train with him about 4 times a week for two hours each time. We do a lot of sumo and training that incorporates movement. I never thought of training outside the dohyo till I was injured. I felt training for sumo should be done exclusively by doing sumo, but now I have changed my way of thinking.," he explained. Today he trained with heyamates Houshouryuu and Akua for about 20 bouts. "I'm a joi so I'll be facing a lot of difficult bouts.. I want to properly get my kachikoshi by going up there feeling strong.," he summed.

There must be some shady organisation trying to assassinate him. This is just ridiculous.

Tatsunami's move looking like an even better idea.

Do I dare ask what a ‘dump-car’ is and what is involved when it rear-ends you?

@Ichimawashi Getting "rear ended" is having another motor vehicle crash into the back of the one you're travelling in. It's a common cause of whiplash injury to the neck (and an even commoner cause of fraudulent insurance claims in the UK apparently).

That being the case, the nature of a "dump car" (though admittedly intriguing) is a little immaterial.

A dump car is effectively a vehicle with tipping capacity. Japanese use car for most smaller vehicles instead of truck or utility(ute)

We discussed the dump car once before I think.

If it has been discussed in the last 5 years, my memory's even worse than I thought!

I'm sure I did not know the Japanese use 'car' to refer to what the Americans call a 'truck', but we Brits properly call a lorry.

Furthermore, I think of the vehicle in the video thumbnail above as a tipper. When I think of dump truck, I think of the monsters associated with mining - as well as Konishiki's nickname on C4.

It's a dump car, not a dump truck.

(Iamgoingoff-topic...)I could have been killed by one of these on Okinawa, except I learned quickly that they run red lights.  I had a blind right turn onto the main highway on the way to work, and I learned to count 2 seconds before proceeding.  One day, one came roaring through on the count of two! :-O
