Achiyama and Terarno have both made their selections, so everybody is in.

I can say that there will need to be some dice rolling to sort out the teams. My 5 year old son Peter (Baku) is fascinated by that, and so he will help me do the rolling. However, he is just about to go to bed, so we will do it tomorrow morning, UK time.

But let's have some statistics....

Most popular team (this is taken from all five of our picks) is Belgium with thirteen picks.

Then it's France with ten.

Germany, Netherlands and Portugal all have nine.

England and Italy both have eight.

Czechia and Spain have six.

Croatia and Finland have five.

Austria, Scotland and Sweden have four.

Denmark, Hungary, Switzerland and Wales have just three.

Poland, Slovakia and Turkey have two.

Russia and Ukraine have only just one pick each!

Nobody selected North Macedonia - which surprised me a little, as the counterbalance team is France.....

As seems to be my tradition (I have just looked back at previous Bench tournaments), I am going to do the 'draw' for representative teams in stages.

So, below are the teams (with the Counterbalance team in brackets) in the real groups, and the number of players picking that team as their first preference. If there is only a '1' by that team, and it is your first selection, then it is yours!

This is the first time that I have looked carefully at the groups that the counterbalance teams are in. Usually there is just one group where there are 'representative team' / 'counterbalance team' twins. This time there are three - half the groups! That will make things interesting, I think.

Group A
Italy (Czechia) - 1
Switzerland (Poland) - 0
Turkey (Sweden) - 1
Wales (Portugal) - 0

So, Group A will be half-filled very quickly!

Group B
Belgium (Finland) - 4
Denmark (Ukraine) - 0
Finland (Belgium) - 1
Russia (Croatia) - 1

Again, Group B will be quickly filled half-full, but there will be a royal rumble for Belgium!

Group C
Austria (Netherlands) - 0
Netherlands (Austria) - 2
North Macedonia (France) - 0
Ukraine (Denmark) - 0

Looks like Group C might take the longest to fill!

Group D
Croatia (Russia) - 1
Czechia (Italy) - 0
England (Hungary) - 1
Scotland (Germany) - 1

Where we'll know the make-up of 75% of Group D very soon - but who will get Czechia to round out the group?

Group E
Poland (Switzerland) - 0
Slovakia (Spain) - 0
Spain (Slovakia) - 1
Sweden (Turkey) - 1

I am surprised that Spain only has one first choice pick! Anyway, half of this group will be completed very soon.

Group F
France (North Macedonia) - 3
Germany (Scotland) - 3
Hungary (England) - 2
Portugal (Wales) - 1

Group F is the most popular group this tournament! Only Portugal's representative will be revealed quickly...

Time to add the 'uncontested' first choice picks in green.

Group A
Italy (Czechia) -
Nantonoyama
Switzerland (Poland) - 0
Turkey (Sweden) -
Baku
Wales (Portugal) - 0

I think Nantonoyama did very well to get Italy uncontested. My son, Baku, chose Turkey as his first choice, because he liked the look of their football strip! As good a reason as any, I suppose.

Group B
Belgium (Finland) - 4
Denmark (Ukraine) - 0
Finland (Belgium) -
Kaba
Russia (Croatia) - Nekonishiki

Nekonishiki will represent Russia for the second competition in-a-row. My youngest son, Kaba, chose Finland, because his best friend at nursery school is called 'Finn'! Actually, I think with the counterbalance team of Belgium, he might have a good selection.

Group C
Austria (Netherlands) - 0
Netherlands (Austria) - 2
North Macedonia (France) - 0
Ukraine (Denmark) - 0

Nothing to fill in at present....

Group D
Croatia (Russia) -
Kuma-Koma
Czechia (Italy) - 0
England (Hungary) -
Jejima
Scotland (Germany) - Jakusotsu

Is Jakusotsu actually more interested in the counterbalance team? I am very surprised that I managed to get England uncontested. I am very disappointed that none of my family had England as any of their five choices, though....

Group E
Poland (Switzerland) - 0
Slovakia (Spain) - 0
Spain (Slovakia) -
Achiyama
Sweden (Turkey) - Ojisan

I am surprised that Spain only had one first choice pick!

Group F
France (North Macedonia) - 3
Germany (Scotland) - 3
Hungary (England) - 2
Portugal (Wales) -
chishafuwaku

chishafuwaku again gets a good team surprisingly easily. He will know the rest of his group by the time the first choice selection picks are doled out.

Time to allocate the teams contested for by two players.  By long tradition, I will be using the random die roller that can be found here.

My son, (Kaba) will be doing the rolling. As he will be rolling the team for my wife, you will have to trust us that his rolling is fair.  (It is.)

The shikona coming first in the alphabet will be allocated numbers 1-3, with the other shikona being allocated 4-6.

First up is Netherlands. This is wanted by Chijanofuji (1-3) and Pitinosato (4-6).

Peter is going to roll the die...

.

.

It's a...

.

So, Chijanofuji is denied his national country, as Netherlands goes to Pitinosato.

Just one more country with a 'pair'. That's Hungary, with Atenzan (1-3) and Godango (4-6)....

.

.

.

.

.

Peter rolls the die....

It's a...

again! The fact that Peter is 5 years old, is a complete coincidence.

Anyway, Godango can claim Hungary.

Let's update the groups....

Group A
Italy (Czechia) -
Nantonoyama
Switzerland (Poland) - 0
Turkey (Sweden) -
Baku
Wales (Portugal) - 0

Move on....

Group B
Belgium (Finland) - 4
Denmark (Ukraine) - 0
Finland (Belgium) -
Kaba
Russia (Croatia) - Nekonishiki

Move on....

Group C
Austria (Netherlands) - 0
Netherlands (Austria) -
Pitinosato
North Macedonia (France) - 0
Ukraine (Denmark) - 0

Pitinosato will have to wait a while for company!

Group D
Croatia (Russia) -
Kuma-Koma
Czechia (Italy) - 0
England (Hungary) -
Jejima
Scotland (Germany) - Jakusotsu

Move on....

Group E
Poland (Switzerland) - 0
Slovakia (Spain) - 0
Spain (Slovakia) -
Achiyama
Sweden (Turkey) - Ojisan

Move on....

Group F
France (North Macedonia) - 3
Germany (Scotland) - 3
Hungary (England) -
Godango
Portugal (Wales) - chishafuwaku

Group F is half full now.

Time to complete the rest of the first round preference choices, those with three or four picks.

We'll do the 'three picks' teams first.

So, France first. That's between Furanohana (1-2), Shounokuni (3-4) and Terarno (5-6).

Come on Peter, roll the die (or rather press the button on the mouse that makes the computer die roll)....

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

It's a.

.

.

.

.

.

.

6!

Peter seems to have a knack for rolling the big numbers!

So, France goes to Terarno.

Onto Germany, between Andrasoyama (1-2), Finngall (3-4) and my wife Fujiko (5-6) - who chose Germany because she thinks that they are a good team. I wonder if that would be enough for her to fail the British nationality exam in a few years time? (Germany and Argentina are the two biggest rivalries that England has for football.) - Although maybe she is secretly considering herself to become Scottish...?

Okay, Peter, step up to the mouse....

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

It's a...

.

.

.

.

.

.

3!

So, Finngall claims Germany.

Time for Belgium, where we have four hopefuls. I have checked how I did it previously, and basically it's done in two rounds....

So, semi-finals are Athenayama and Djodjoyoshi (1-3) versus Ganzohnesushi and Joaoiyama (4-6). Of course Athenayama and Djodjoyoshi are cousins. Did they know that they were picking the same first choice team?

Come on Peter, do your thing.....

.

.

.

.

.

.

It's a....

.

.

.

.

.

.

1!

So, one of the cousins will get Belgium, but which one? Athenayama (1-3) or Djodjoyoshi (4-6)....

.

.

.

.

.

.

Come here Peter!

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

It's a....

.

.

.

.

.

.

3! (Peter's immediate comment. "Oh, not a 3 again. I wanted a 6!")

But 3 it is, so Athenayama can have the prized Belgium.

Let's update the tables....

Group A
Italy (Czechia) -
Nantonoyama
Switzerland (Poland) - 0
Turkey (Sweden) -
Baku
Wales (Portugal) - 0

Move on....

Group B
Belgium (Finland) -
Athenayama
Denmark (Ukraine) - 0
Finland (Belgium) -
Kaba
Russia (Croatia) - Nekonishiki

Move on....

Group C
Austria (Netherlands) - 0
Netherlands (Austria) -
Pitinosato
North Macedonia (France) - 0
Ukraine (Denmark) - 0

Pitinosato still waiting for company.

Group D
Croatia (Russia) -
Kuma-Koma
Czechia (Italy) - 0
England (Hungary) -
Jejima
Scotland (Germany) - Jakusotsu

Move on....

Group E
Poland (Switzerland) - 0
Slovakia (Spain) - 0
Spain (Slovakia) -
Achiyama
Sweden (Turkey) - Ojisan

Move on....

Group F
France (North Macedonia) -
Terarno
Germany (Scotland) - Finngall
Hungary (England) - Godango
Portugal (Wales) - chishafuwaku

Group F is now complete.

I am going to get a cup of coffee, and then I'll start sorting through the second choice preferences....

We have nine players yet to be assigned a 'representative team'.

Okay, let's go to second round choices. They have all gone already! so, nothing to add there.

Hmm, let's examine all the rest of the choices....

I can assign two third round choices, no fourth round choices, and one fifth round choice. That means that six players (one quarter of the players!) still won't have a representative team....  We'll get to them in a second.

Let's allocate the three teams that can be given out...

Group A
Italy (Czechia) -
Nantonoyama
Switzerland (Poland) - Furanohana
Turkey (Sweden) - Baku
Wales (Portugal) - 0

Furanohana gets his third choice team.

Group B
Belgium (Finland) -
Athenayama
Denmark (Ukraine) - Fujiko
Finland (Belgium) - Kaba
Russia (Croatia) - Nekonishiki

My wife, Fujiko, gets her fifth choice team - and will be competing in the same group as our 4 year-old son! I hope that my family give suitably strong competition for the other two players. (I do not influence their line-ups in any way....) So Group B is the second group to get completed.

Group C
Austria (Netherlands) - 0
Netherlands (Austria) -
Pitinosato
North Macedonia (France) - 0
Ukraine (Denmark) - 0

Nobody wants to play with Pitinosato!

Group D
Croatia (Russia) -
Kuma-Koma
Czechia (Italy) - Atenzan
England (Hungary) - Jejima
Scotland (Germany) - Jakusotsu

Atenzan gets his third choice pick, and Group D is now also complete!

Group E
Poland (Switzerland) - 0
Slovakia (Spain) - 0
Spain (Slovakia) -
Achiyama
Sweden (Turkey) - Ojisan

Move on (again)....

Group F
France (North Macedonia) -
Terarno
Germany (Scotland) - Finngall
Hungary (England) - Godango
Portugal (Wales) - chishafuwaku

Group F is the only group filled with first choice representation. Everyone truly cares about their 'representative teams'!

So, we have six players still needing a representative team:- Andrasoyama, Chijanofuji, Djodjoyoshi, Ganzohnesushi, Joaoiyama and Shounokuni.

We also have six teams that need representation (counterbalance teams in brackets). I think that there are still some gems out there (if you consider the counterbalance team in combination)!

They are:-
Austria (Netherlands)
North Macedonia (France)
Poland (Switzerland)
Slovakia (Spain)
Ukraine (Denmark)
Wales (Portugal)

As there are just six teams, I will create a new Survey Monkey survey for those six teams to be filled out by only those six players.

@Andrasoyamawaka02, @Chijanofuji, @Ganzohnesushi, @Joaoiyama, @Athenayama(for Djodjoyoshi), @Atenzan (for Shounokuni).

Stay tuned.

This is for the remaining six only....

Please click here to make your second attempt at picking your representative team.

Please do this as soon as possible (within 24 hours from now?), as there are still some other bits of pre-tournament administration to cover, before the tournament begins.

@Andrasoyamawaka02, @Chijanofuji, @Ganzohnesushi, @Joaoiyama, @Athenayama(for Djodjoyoshi), @Atenzan (for Shounokuni).

Sorry for the delay.

I thought that I had better go through the previous Bench World Cup before confirming the two substitutes rule.

I am also busy being the full-time father for a 4 year-old and a 5 year-old this weekend, as my wife is working 8am to 8pm shifts. Peter and Felix have kindly allowed me an hour for 'work' (I have 30 minutes left), before I need to play with them (again).

It has taken me a couple of hours to go through the Bench World Cup 2018, and I have noticed the following....

1.) I was VERY tired during that World Cup, with two bables (aged 1 and 2) at home, and matches taking place in the early hours for Hong Kong - several of which I watched over dodgy internet connections. I had completely forgotten (this is 100% true) that England managed to reach the semi-finals. This tournament is in a favourable time zone for me - and my boys are old enough to sleep through the night. :-)

2.) The rules (especially for the later rounds) are not always clearly written. I note that at the time that I said that I would try to review the rules to make them easier to understand, and that @Fukurou  said that she would help, and that @Achiyama volunteered to provide some of his tables. But I fear that this project was not undertaken - probably because the Bench Sumo basho took place immediately afterwards, and so two weeks later, all was forgotten (Did I mention that I had a one year old and two year old baby at home?)  There is still time (probably) to try to rewrite the rules to make them clearer before the tournament begins. I think the group stage are pretty clear, so really just the knockout stages need another good look. (No need to change the actual rules, just need to make them more clear.) There will still probably be controversy - but that just mirrors the real thing. ;-)

It looks like the rule pages here can't be edited by me.

Moderators, why?

3. I noticed that a couple of times on the previous Bench World Cup thread, there were a couple of times that people appeared to be on the brink of being upset with the game and with each other players. Again, that mirrors the real thing, but I hope that we can keep that side of the game to a minimum? :-)

4. The rules suggest that for the Bench Euros, the regular squad should be made up of eight teams, subject to change. I see that in 2016 we had 9 teams in a squad. I am going to see how that got on - and rechecking the updated odds from the five bookmakers, before deciding whether to make our squads 8 or 9 (or possibly 10!) teams this time around.

5. I have decided to keep the number of substitutes to 'two' - the rules page currently says 'three' under the 'Squads' topic, and then 'two' under 'Substitutes'. But (see above) I can't currently edit the rules pages.... Two is the correct number.

Oh. Peter and Felix have just come upstairs to inform me that my hour of work is up!

So, I will send out details about submitting your squads later today. :-)

Yes, many thanks. I thought that I had an extra 15 minutes or so, whilst the boys were focussed on snack-time.... But they are again dragging me away from the computer!

I think creating a new instance of the rules would be better than editing the old page, though.
