Eikokurai 3,433 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) WTF? My stream just went down! Ah, phew, it reappeared for just long enough to see the bout before it got cut off again. Edited May 23, 2021 by Eikokurai

Seiyashi 4,071 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) Ok, that was uncharacteristically sloppy of Terunofuji. And he landed knees first, that's got to hurt. Both hit out of the tachiai at an odd angle, and Takakeisho's superior balance shows. Edited May 23, 2021 by Seiyashi
Thorbjarn 214 Posted May 23, 2021 That was impressive by Takakeisho. And makes Endo's loss all the more disappointing.
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) And Terunofuji's tsukebito Sakurafuji takes a spill in the tunnel for no discernible reason. At least Terunofuji shows some concern. Edited May 23, 2021 by Seiyashi
Benihana 1,901 Posted May 23, 2021 Will Takakeisho be the 2nd to force a ketteisen and then grab the yusho from Terunofuji, like Kisenosato did?
Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) Terunofuji's got to be feeling rattled at this point. Edited May 23, 2021 by Kaninoyama

I'm more concerned about his bodily integrity than anything else right now. And for the first time this basho Takakeisho's last yusho portrait gets some airtime, intercut with Terunofuji's from last basho.

Eikokurai 3,433 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) After Endo's loss to miserable party-pooper Shodai, I feared an anti-climax to the basho. At least we get a ketteisen. Both men have done the minimum I feel to be on a rope run next basho, whoever takes the cup. Edited May 23, 2021 by Eikokurai
Thorbjarn 214 Posted May 23, 2021 On a sidenote, I really like that rivalry between Takakeisho and Terunofuji. If this is the thing for the next two, three years while others are on the rise, I'd 100% be okay with it.

Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) If Terunofuji blows this, that needless hair grab will haunt him for a long time. Edited May 23, 2021 by Kaninoyama

The contrast in their styles really helps too.

It sets them apart from the rest and rikishi who are apart from the rest we call Yokozuna. It may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes it's easier to show your superiority with a rival of equal power and ability than to be the lone guy at the top. The rivals act as sort of benchmarks to measure each other against. Edited May 23, 2021 by Eikokurai
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) The shots in the shitakubeya are nice. Apparently a yobidashi summons the rikishi to the playoff with five claps from the hyoshi-gi. And oooooo, split screen of the two walking down the hanamichi. That's nice production values. Edited May 23, 2021 by Seiyashi
Tigerboy1966 1,376 Posted May 23, 2021 That was one of the worst performances I have ever seen from Terunofuji. Really horrible stuff.
Eikokurai 3,433 Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) God, this ketteisen deserves a better yobidashi than that. Tone deaf and no sense of occasion. Edited May 23, 2021 by Eikokurai

I think, as with the tategyoji, you're stuck with this one for a while. The NHK announcer's voice is cracking with emotion. FWIW it's not consecutive, so it mightn't be as bad as a really long one. And Terunofuji has never won a makuuchi playoff, so there's that too.
