Natsu basho 2021

I don’t understand the hate on Endo for this basho. He’s been doing some pretty good sumo and has legitimately beat the two other players on the leaderboard. And they’re giving him a final challenge with Shodai regardless of his record, more so because he is technically an ozeki too

Tobizaru stayed on the dohyo! Is he allowed to do that?

We have him for another three years before retirement at least, don't we? Enjoy the ride.

Nah, his sumo is good, and the bout with Terunofuji was spectacular. The only bit I didn't like about that bout was the smirk on his face after the sashichigae. As someone who's been yo-yoing up and down the banzuke and never broken komusubi, it seems way too cocky even if he did beat two ozeki. If I gave the impression I was hating on him in general, that's not the case.

To be fair, this basho's sashichigae weren't as bad as the usual. One was a hansoku, and the other was a picture finish. It's not as bad as some of his other mistakes, although it certainly does add up.

One could always pray Hakkaku actually accepts the resignation one of these days. Has there ever been a tate-gyoji quite as error-prone as he is whose resignation was accepted?

I didn't see what you saw. But if Endo was smug, I think Terunofuji deserved it.  He has been pretty arrogant (a la Hak) after dispatching each of his opponents.  Of course, these observations are subjective.

The look on Endo's face to me was just a nervous response to achieving a fantastic result, but yes purely subjective.

Despite feeling that the current Inosuke does not belong in the tate-gyoji rank he holds, I have to admit that having him and catching his mistakes is more interesting (pseudo-enjoyable) than having someone else who is flawless. ;-)

Still, September 22, 2024 can't come soon enough!

I feel like Endo first attempted to hook Teru’s leg with his right and Teru then tried to convert it into a kakenage.

I see what you mean.  The slow motion replay I watched starts half way through the fall.  You are right that Endo tried to hook Teru's left ankle (n.b., from the outside) first, and it would appear that Endo's foot slips off after he raises Teru's leg off the ground.

Interestingly, the kimarite called was shitatenage (nothing to do with the foot sweep).  I guess the view was that Terunofuji was initiating the kakenage, but Endo out-muscled him on the belt.

Apparently NSK Chairman is pretty pleased with Endo and his two upsets over Ozeki.

That Endo vs Terunofuji match was fantastic, and a deserved win for Endo. They debated it for quite a long time and, frankly, I would've been alright with a torinaoshi too considering how close it was, but in the end when both wrestlers are engaged in a double throw like that the winner is decided by the centimeters of who touches down first.

On a side note, there was a rare shot of the kimarite display during the broadcast:

They pretty much only show that when there’s a rare or unusual kimarite; in this case, Akua’s tsukihiza.

Somehow I can't see Takakeishou getting a morozashi on Terunofuji twice tomorrow. Just the way I feel.

Endo has the legwork too. He’s the first this basho to test Terunofuji’s balance and ability to resist a trip or sweep.

As an Endo fan, I've said this many times: Endo's legwork is phenomenal. His base of balance is so wide that when he's on form, he can beat anybody. The problem is, even a small injury can weaken the base so much that has a hard time putting it to full use constantly.

The comment section under Jason's coverage of the Terunofuji-Endo bout is absolutely mental,
so many people claiming that Teru won the fight and that it was clearly rigged because of the
rampant xenophobia against foreign rikishi..

People are weird bro

Great match for Endo and Terunofuji.

As far as who will get K1w, Meisei or Endo,  I wouldn't call Meisei a lock.  If Meisei loses Day 15, he is 0-6 vs Okinoumi, it's Endo's even is Endo loses. In Meisei's favor is Okinoumi seems to be in cruise mode after getting his KK. I would say if Endo wins against Shodai its's his having beat 3 Ozeki he faced, including the Yusho winner, and on his way to 2 Sansho and  Jun Yusho.  If Endo wins the Yuhso in a playoff he'll take K1e from Wakatakakage.

As far as Yokozuna I would say if Takakeisho and Terunofuji  are in playoffs Day 15 and to decide who wins in July, and they both win 1 Yusho, then they'll both be Yokozuna for Aki.

Ross on NHK keeps talking about Wakatakakage being Sekiwake next tournament, is he just forgetting about Mitakeumi at K1e at kachikoshi or what?

Except it's not Ross. It's Hiro Morita.

In the past year, Endo has looked much more like the rikishi he was promised to be. I wonder if he'll get a proper shikona some day soon?

Ouhou limping badly after his loss to Shouhouzan today-his ankle hit the tawara as he was falling-must have twisted it. Everyone rushed to him as per the new guidelines whereupon you don't leave the injured guy there to deal with it on his own.

Right ankle injury. The usual "we'll see tomorrow how bad it is but he has the kachikoshi already so we won't do anything unreasonable.." regarding his appearing tomorrow. He's out for sure.

He handed in his "resignation" verbally which was met with words of encouragement by the rijicho, which is code for "yeah, yeah, yeah, we're stuck with you for a few more years.."

Has any tategyoji's resignation been accepted? But there hasn't been anyone quite as hapless as SI41, right?

Or to put it another way, has any tategyoji gone into that meeting expecting to actually get fired and actually getting fired?

Is he even capable of morozashi? That said, I can see how with his superior and lower centre of gravity, morozashi's definitely one way to a quick win if he can catch Terunofuji upright and not give him a chance to brace, and I don't see Terunofuji being able to kime-hold him from a non-awkward angle.

Well if he makes ozeki, surely then. Before that... he's quite popular, so changing the name isn't really temping. Don't mess with the brand.

Shodai went to ozeki without changing the name either. And so did Takayasu, Dejima and Wajima in the past. I guess it helps that their names sound somewhat like shikona, so there won't actually be that much pressure to change.
