Perhaps this could be moved to a new thread. Will you believe I had a complete brain fart and thought the next basho was in Nagoya. Deleting the post. Kintamayama 44,278 Posted April 23, 2021 (edited) The first three days will be held without spectators, it was decided today. A rijikai will be held on the 26th to affirm that and see what will happen next. Tokyo will be under emergency measures again due to the new outbreak of the virus between April 26th and May 11th (day three of the basho). "We have to go along with this. All of Japan, nay, all of the world is suffering from this so we have to be flexible. It is truly a distressing and difficult situation. However, it cannot be overcome unless everyone cooperates and overcomes it," explained Shibatayama PR man. Edited April 23, 2021 by Kintamayama 3

Tigerboy1966 1,376 Posted May 8, 2021 It's gone awfully quiet round here, considering that we are only a few hours away from the start of the basho. I see that the the three men who had sanyaku-worthy records but got stuck at the top of maegashira will (predictably) get a chance to prove how unlucky they were in the first two days: Wakatakage gets Takakeisho and Shodai Meisei gets Terunofuji and Asanoyama Hokutofuji gets Shodai and Terunofuji Good luck lads!

I think everybody is waiting... It's just calm before the storm! :) My top 5 most waited bouts from Day 1: #5 - Tochinoshin vs Ichinojo - looking forward to hear them grunt in the empty Kokugikan!!! #4 - Takayasu vs Tobizaru - can Takayasu bounce back from the loss in March? #3 - Shodai vs Hokutofuji - Hokutofuji won in March! Shodai didn't look that good during the preparations... Maybe the Greatest Stamper will get this one? #2 - Wakatakakage vs Takakeisho - 1-1? Come on... #1 - Asanoyama vs Daieisho - 6-9 to Daieisho. Last two had been won by him too. Last time, when Daieisho won against Asanoyama on Day 1, he clinched the yusho. Great musubi no ichiban for the day! :)

Not too much to talk about I guess. There aren’t any meaningful narratives to follow as the basho begins, other than perhaps Shodai’s kadoban situation and how Terunofuji will do in his Ozeki return. No Yokozuna, no Ozeki runs, no Makuuchi debuts.

Seriously though, is it possible that behind the scenes someone in the health services has told the Kyokai that they need to get a handle on what 50% capacity actually means? Last time it looked like 80% in the closest seats and 10% in the rafters. Until they figure out a way to ensure that everyone is in the seats they bought and they don't oversell any sections, they're not helping control the covid spread at all (except in the far away seats). Benihana 1,901 Posted May 9, 2021 Aaand we have something to talk. Enho's botched ashitori attempt and what followed. I had to chuckle a bit. Maybe he should ask ashitori-master Ura for some advice.
