Air sumo and kata

Recommended Posts

In Corona times, to have social distance, doing sumo alone has developed into special contests. Air sumo is a kind of hitori-zumo, but not against an invisible spirit, more like the kata in karate. The contestants show the techniques like in a bout. The Kashiwa-city (Chiba pref.) sumo federation plans a as a video contest a National sumo kata tournament, where the participating kids send in a video: absolute perfect social distance.

Judged are:

up to 60s shiko stamping

up to 90s hitori-zumo (air sumo): perform like there is an opponent, winning or losing

up to 90s club PR (the sample video of course presents the Kashiwa dojo)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U79zh_lVBIo

Around 10 judges will decide on the entries, Aomori pref. parliament member ex-Hayateumi among them

What's the story on Hayateumi?  He had 38 basho as sekitori, highest rank Sekiwake.  Nihon University grad.  He's clearly doing OK now job-wise; did he consider staying in Sumo?
