I would have thought that Takarafuji would be tachimoshi. He's done this job for Hakuho quite a few times.

I agree that Takarafuji is the more likely pick, especially if Hakuho turns to Isegahama Stable to recruit someone.  Takarafuji is the senior (but not too senior) man available for the role.

I suppose I was thinking that in January, Midorifuji had an impact akin to Ishiura and Enho when they debuted in the Top Division, and that will have caught Hakuho's eye.  But aside from the consideration of seniority, Hakuho may be weary of whether Midorifuji can fight all 15 days this month since it has been reported that he suffered an injury during the break...

Hakuho just might do something unconventional.

Takarafuji couldn't be an attendant every day, since he can't be on the day he faces Hakuho, right?

Yes, you are absolutely right.  But if and when that comes to pass, a replacement is selected.

Given that Hakuho will take part in the Spring Tournament, fans will finally be treated to a Yokozuna dohyoiri again!  The main question is who will serve as his attendants, his his protégés Enho and Ishiura are both down in the Juryo Division.  My guess is Midorifuji will get the nod as tachimochi and Kaisei as tsuyuharai.

Terunofuji not an option? He is the highest ranked from Isegahama, therefore, shouldn't he be ahead of Takarafuji and Midorifuji?

Although, i don't think his knees would be very happy to squat for that long.

No ozeki has served as attendant, for example Takayasu was Kisenosato's attendant right after Kise was promoted, and stopped later that same year when he was promoted to ozeki. I would assume that it's the same for former ozeki, at least since I haven't seen anything to the contrary.

While Sekiwake Terunofuji is arguably an option, Yokozunas tend to prefer selecting rank-and-file wrestlers over junior Sanyaku men, and Ozeki are pretty much off limits.

Musashimaru with attendants Buyuzan (joined makuuchi 2001.11) and Miyabiyama (dropped from ozeki after 2001.09):

(Based on the commentary it appears it's what turned out to be his last dohyo appearance, Kyushu 2003 Day 7.)

What an opening day clash we have for tomorrow, the return of king Hakuho vs the defending champion Daieisho. Given Hakuho's length of absence perhaps it is safe to say Daiesho is the favorite?

Again no rikishi and no public, about 900 watched the stream live.

with a proper start of the yobidashi parade, but still it also ends there

A new service: appear in a short video together with rikishi - also one not at the basho - for 1000yen (with 300yen reduction for those who buy other things like curry in the kokugikan)  http://k-tai.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/review/1311857.html

Day 1 will see a match i've been waiting for very long. Honey Badger vs. Flying Minkey, exciting! My money is on the hunny, but it wouldn't be disappointed when the minkey flies away with the kensho.

I didn't ever think I'd see the day Mitoryu defeated someone like Shohozan. It's been slow but Mitoryu's technique has improved a lot.

Or Shohozan has also slipped to meet him. He's not been looking in top form for a very long time now.

Is it just me or has Ishiura bulked massively over the two month break? Doesn't seem to have done his agility any favours, though.

Turns out they've gone for Midorifuji and Terutsuyoshi as tachimochi and tsuyuharai respectively.

Let's get the most important business out of the way first. "The Woman" is back, but in a brand new position, just right of center on the TV screen.

There used to be a guideline on Wikipedia that a wrestler only merited an article when he had six basho or 3 kk in makunouchi. Back in 2018 someone jumped the gun and created a Mitoryu page but no-one minded as he was so obviously going to hit that target...

The Honey Badger absolutely mauls the Flying Monkey, with sumo that was as railroady as you could get without actually being railroady.

Good Ichinojo turned up this basho; he absolutely handled Tochinoshin like a sack of rice.

Little typo, but otherwise i agree with you 100%. Damn, if i had the chance to face one of the guys on the dohyo, i'd rather go against Ichinojo or Aoiyama, than Chiyonokuni.

The archetypal Kagayaki match has a four-act structure: 1 go for the throat, 2 drive straight forward, 3 get sidestepped, 4 fall over.

Today he varied varied the formula by surviving  the lateral shift. This will be his breakout basho, as I have said every two months for the last four years.

Nice reversal by Meisei to win by kakenage. That's one of my favourite kimarite – part throw, part trip.
