Some favorite music from different countries:

Hungary: Yonderboi - Milonga Del Mar   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nDZNF5gME0

Great tune from his debut album "Shallow and Profound" in 2000.

Latvia: Auli - Karotajs Live   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BStwAWAk_Qs

Bagpipes and drums at its best in this mix of folk and medieval music from 2010. Exciting.

Russia: Huun Huur Tu - Chiraa-Khoor   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bDntRWfL70

Not really Russians as these group comes from Tuva, a Russian federative republic situated on the Mongolia–Russia border. Their music includes throat singing. Close your eyes when listening.

Spain: Los Chunguitos - "!Ay que dolor!"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE04fu7QzVI

Brilliant title track from the Carlos Saura film “Deprisa! Deprisa!” from 1981.

And as we are in a Sumo forum of course this beautiful version from 2016 of a folk song from

Mongolia: Altai Band - Eejin Duun (Kalmyk Folk Song) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIRzTd_Rtqc

Here is an interesting Mongolian heavy metal band called The HU Band.  They play traditional Mongolian folk instruments (marin khoor - horse head fiddle among them) that have been modified.  They also incorporate throat singing into their songs.  This is my favorite of their songs.

I credit this video with sparking my interest in Japanese enka songs.  A friend of Alana, the young woman who is singing the song, recorded her at a karaoke club.  Alana is half Japanese and half American but was raised in Japan.  I love the photos in the slideshow.  They make me yearn to return to Japan, my favorite foreign country.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2-hVO5Pf4A

Tom Lehrer, a singer-songwriter of hilarious songs, many of which poked fun at contemporary society, was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s.  It's amazing how many of his songs have stood the test of time.  National Brotherhood Week is one of them and is a favorite of mine.  This was recorded live at a concert in 1965.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH1e8uZzTaY

Here is a beautiful traditional Mongolian folk song called "Chandmani" sung by Enkh Erdene, a young man with an incredible voice.  If you scroll down, you can read an English translation of the lyrics.

Believe it or not, this is the same singer who sang Chandmani in the video above.  He is extremely versatile.  The song he sings in this video is a rock version of a traditional Mongolian folk song!!  He can also sing the American country song "Amarillo by Morning" with an American Southern accent.  Also Elvis' song "Don't Be Cruel".  He's my new favorite singer!

Here's Enkh Erdene again singing "Amarillo by Morning".  He doesn't speak a word of English (at least not when he performed this song).  This song was made famous by George Strait, an American country star.  Enkh sounds even more authentic than George Strait!!! lol

Once again, the young Mongolian singer Enkh Erdene, this time doing his best Elvis impression.

I wish I knew more Finnish.  It's hard to believe this guy played a character with missing teeth in dozens of movies.  Now look at him! And what a resonant voice.

This video could be titled An Intimate Evening with Odin.

Loiri is sui generis, a Renaissance man. Finnish champion in water polo and handball, played also football for a season at national top level – always a goalie. You see, Vladimir Beara denied a penalty in Helsinki Olympic Games final, when Vesku was in an impressionable age. Not that much in absolute terms, but anyway.

Uuno Turhapuro is indeed a totem animal of many a Finnish man. Very few are able to pinpoint the exact barley field used to create a bottle of vodka or smell the type of sausage displayed on shop window, through it. Those of delicate nature are now not advised to google images. In later decades he's been more famous for more serious roles in over seventy films, the earlier humorous ones included. A sample from a Eighties humour show – English subs.

As a teenager I understood nothing about Loiri's early Eighties recordings of Eino Leino's poems. Now I do. Then again no one wrote Finnish like Leino did.

About a decade ago, by the time of this recording below, he came close to dying, yet survived and lost seventy kilos of weight getting his act together. This was somewhat of a hit.

His voice is very recognizable and it's a favourite for impressionists. There's even one who only mimics Loiri. :-D

I still have both of his albums.  A genius at coming up with insane rhymes, like in "We Will All Go Together When We Go":

Oh, we will all char together when we char
And let there be no moaning of the bar
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.
And the party will be come-as-you-are

Ah, hell ...

This thread is getting too complicated for me!  @sumojoann, The HU Band has been covered extensively on "our sister channel" thread, Music Abroad.

Am not aware of a "sister channel thread" and I only mentioned the HU Band one time with one link.  I don't see the problem.  This is a great thread, not too complicated for me....

One of my favorite movies is "Spinal Tap".  My favorite song in the movie is "Big Bottom".  It's a little risque so I hope no one is offended.

Right next to this thread in Off-Topic.  Not a problem, just saying they're covered there, too.:-)

Good to know.  But since this thread was asking about favorite songs, I chose to mention it - one time, one link.

Tom Lehrer reminded me that my 2nd favorite group is actually Kabarett, but since for that the music is mostly unimportant and the text all important, I forgot those songs - and Tom Lehrer is the only non German language favorite in that category. My 4th favorite category is film music and 5th and last popular music, including musicals. I checked the old recordings for pop as well, searched for missing titles and made a list of those who are still my top favorites.

first a semi electronic group

Alan Parsons Project: Time, The Raven, Pyramania
Mickie D's Unicorn - In the Times of the Unicorn
Yello - Vicious Games

a bit international

Alice - Per Elisa
Angelo Branduardi - Cogli la prima mela
Jacques Dutronc - Il Est 5 Heures Paris S'Eveille
Notre Dame de Paris, Garou&others - Belle

the main folder oldie group

Al Stewart - On the Border
America - A horse with no name
Billy Idol -  Flesh for Fantasy, Eyes Without a Face
Blood, Sweat & Tears - Spinning Wheel
Chris de Burgh - High On Emotion
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Marrakesh Express
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Don McLean - Castles in the Air
Duran Duran - Ordinary world
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
Godley & Creme - Under Your Thumb
Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That
Journey - Wheel In The Sky
Poco - Rose of Cimarron
Renaissance - Northern Lights
Stranglers - Golden Brown
Tennessee Ernie Ford - Sixteen Tons
Traffic - Hole in My Shoe
Who - Substitute

and the newer oldie group

Coldplay - Speed Of Sound
Midge Ure - Breathe
Paul Van Dyk - Time of our Lives
Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite

@Akinomaki, some real gems there!  Your main folder is great -- I included Northern Lights in my list, and have never encountered anyone who's heard of it -- until now.

Anyone like computer game music?  This one has a bit of an 'Omen' vibe to it.

You know regarding Spinal Tap's 'big bottom' track, the doubly hilarious thing about it is that it's actually a great song too :D
