That has got to be the most "cauliflower" ear I've ever seen.

Saito specializes on helping restaurants with official documents, e.g. to apply for subsidiary aid as sales are down in Corona times. His right "gyoza" ear is a sign of his rikishi days, but surprisingly few people notice his past history: "My weight is down about 60kg from the 165kg when active."

After being a rikishi for 4 years he made it to makushita, in Kyushu 2010 when thrown off the dohyo, his ACL snapped and his meniscus was damaged. He was brought to a hospital and immediately had surgery, but it took him a year to return. He changed his shikona from Saito to Oruri, but couldn't do sumo like before, having constant fear of re-injury: "After a loss rather than frustration I felt relief. Without frustration you can't get stronger anymore. I decided to retire."

"In the job interview at one company I heard: 'No experience in work society, just got the driver's license, can't use the PC - the 3 conditions  combined.' and was rejected. With the record as ex-rikishi comes the stigma of not being able to work. I realized that I had been protected by the oyakata and okamisan. The necessities of life were guaranteed, if something occurs they take care. What seemed a harsh environment had been one to be thankful for."

After that he took PC lessons for 3 months and gained a qualification. He got work through a temporary staff recruitment agency for the construction business, working at the construction site of a highway in Hyogo pref. "I had no knowledge of the construction industry and without understanding what the people around me were saying, I was of no use, there was a constant feeling of inferiority. The urge to be able to work self-confident became ever stronger."

With some qualification he would find some starting point, with that thought he searched the net and found the term 行政書士 "administrative scrivener". "I had no idea what that occupation was and on top of that, had no legal knowledge. But checking it I found that it had connections to the construction business and I could make use of the experience on site. I wanted to change myself. I even felt that if I couldn't get that qualification, my life might be over."

Half a year after finding a job he started to go to classes at a vocational school, another half year later he quit the job to concentrate on learning, while doing part time jobs.

The exam was once a year, with passing rate of 10%. At the 3rd attempt he made it in January, 4 years after intai. He opened an office in Osaka on August 2018, but just with a qualification, work wouldn't come rushing in, competition was hard. "The range of branches is wide, 'can do everything'  comes with 'can't do anything'. I had to specialize." He focused on the restaurant sector, where many ex-rikishi start a business.

"In June international standards for food hygiene became obligatory, many shop operators have to file documents." "Now with Corona there are tough times for the restaurant industry, I want to support those who hold on. I believe that after it's over, more will think about opening a shop."

"A lot of rikishi after intai start in the restaurant business. When opening a shop, a lot of permits and licensees are necessary. I though I can help there. I had a hard time after retiring, I want to become someone to help soften other's hardships there."

In case anyone was wondering -ex-Hayateumi (36, he who flies) has entered local politics and won the regional elections in his hometown of Itayanagimachi, Aomori. (I'm not really sure, but I think he was elected to the town council or something like that..) He left sumo in 2006 and returned home in 2009 where he worked in a security firm. "I will do my best," he said, without using the GBR word.

Ex-Hayateumi since 2014 is member of the Aomori pref. assembly, presently in his 3rd term, and this summer will be running for the LDP at the upper house elections in the Aomori electoral district. He was chosen by the party yesterday in a voting over another candidate hopeful, 3471 votes for him vs. 1199. https://kahoku.news/articles/20220219khn000047.html

In Corona times, to have social distance, doing sumo alone has developed into special contests. Air sumo is a kind of hitori-zumo, but not against an invisible spirit, more like the kata in karate. The contestants show the techniques like in a bout. The Kashiwa-city (Chiba pref.) sumo federation plans as a video contest a National sumo kata tournament, where the participating kids send in a video: absolute perfect social distance.

Around 10 judges will decide on the entries, Aomori pref. parliament member ex-Hayateumi among them

Yesterday Wakanojo was the rikishi example in a special of the series about vanished genius-athletes and what they do now. He now works, with ex-Wakatenro and ex-Wakatoba, in care for the elderly, preparing chanko for them and pleasing them by doing sumo in rikishi suits. The problem that hindered and ended his career at 31 was the diabetes he had developed at age 18.

Data mentioned:

Average age of retirement is 24.5, 95% leave the NSK: close to 50% end up in the restaurant business, 2nd most as care workers, 3rd as seitai practitioners.

70% of the rikishi develop diabetes type 2 due to their eating and drinking habits.

Saito is using the shikona (and image) Hayateumi on his election poster, but only applied for the elections under his real name - he could have applied for both. If people cast a vote for Hayateumi now instead of Saito, which is to be expected, the vote might be invalid, people have to write the proper name on the ballot. On top of that, his rivals focus on easy to write hiragana names and he sticks to kanji. http://kahoku.news/articles/20220623khn000039.html

001_size7.jpg

He aims for a parliament seat of an ex-rikishi like last Kyokudozan 22 years ago for the NFP, for 4 years till the party disbanded. Voting for the 1 Aomori seat starts on July 10th, he is running against a prominent rival, Masayo_Tanabu, who aims for reelection.

Other rikishi turned MP: Kyokushuzan in Mongolia, 2008-12, Baruto in Estonia in 2019.

He and his helpers use the site hayateumi.com and a YT channel for PR - and his older twitter. The posters on the site show him only now though: hayateumi.com/download

His data now: 184cm, 129kg, chest 120cm, grip strength 90kg, 5.6s on a 50m dash

His former occupation is sumo, it is not listed among the sports he is good at.

He talks about his youth, amateur beginnings and pro sumo career at first in the presentation video for the elections https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBX-h5nnuwk&t=30s

The highlight is his trademark jump, also in his profile https://hayateumi.com/profile/#sumo

Ex-Masunoyama looked like a ball when active, now he looks like any ordinary staff in the care for the elderly, where he started his 2nd career now, with the initial qualification in the business, work beginner in training. He stopped to eat deep fried food and switched to a low fat diet, that brought him from 187kg down to 102kg, his ligament ossification problems (OLF and OPLL) got better and also the condition of his lower back.

He had his danpatsu-shiki on April 2nd and works now at a rehabilitation facility for the elderly in Arakawa ward.
