Looking for Matsumoto [松本司和]

Recommended Posts

Hello! Everyone..

Do you know about 松本司和 (Matsumoto Tsukasa?) ?

I visited Japan with my father in 2002. I saw some of the sumo wrestlers at that time and took pictures with them, unfortunately the photos are gone. :'-(

After I watched some sumo matches on the internet, I saw this person and started searching for his name. And when I saw the kanji his name was Matsumoto / 松本 (I studied Japanese at college, forgive me if I wrong) .

I think that I saw this guy back then, when my dad and I were visiting Japan and taking pictures with some sumo wrestlers.

Do you have any biographies, Profiles or websites that I can visit featuring this wrestler?

Thank you.. :)

Irodori has real name Matsumoto and used that as his shikona for awhile, but he has a different given name ( 豊 ).

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=7111

There wasn't a rikishi using the shikona Matsumoto in 2002, and I don't think there's a way to search the DB by real name, but you can do an "include changes" and see who has ever used a name as a shikona.  It looks like there were 3 as of 2002.

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=602

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=403

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=290

But again, none of them have the same given name.  ( 好平 , 忠士 and 潤也 )

There's also

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=6012

from around that time, but again with a different given name (太一 ).

I poked into this quite a bit and this is what I found.  I think this might be our guy.  There was a rikishi with the shikona Tamakasuga Ryoji, born Ryoji Matsumoto in 1972.  For some reason, I could not find him on the database!(****** see post below --- he is on database******)  He debuted in Jan 1994 and retired in Sept 2008.  He began his career in Kataonami Heya where he is now Kataonami Oyakata (since 2010).

The photos you posted are VERY old and appear to be from when he competed in amateur sumo before he went pro.  His mawashi is white with kanji on the front of it and his hair is very short.  However, in looking at his facial features, he has a distinctive short stout nose with a rounded tip and wide-set nostrils, wide-set eyes and bushy eyebrows.  I you look at the photo of him on wikipedia as Kataonami Oyakata (he's now 49 years old), I see a definite resemblance.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamakasuga_Ryōji

I found another database on SF showing pictures of him as he aged, but they start in the year 2000, 6 years after he debuted and many years after your pictures were taken.  Click on the photos on the left (those are the earliest).  You have to click a total of 3 times to get them to enlarge.  Let me know what you think!

This is a cool database  http://heyaaz.nagioff.com/2020/2020.html

Rather than click on the photos below, you can click on the link above, then click on Kataonami Heya in the left hand column.  Click on Kataonami Oyakata's FACE.  That will bring you to the photos.  Then click once to enlarge.

Likely an amateur rikishi google.search?q=相撲&epq=松本 司和

The DB can be searched for real names using google advanced search, and this Matsumoto is not in it.

I opened the link and yes, there are some pics of him in google. Thank you veri much.  (Bow...) I'm really appreciate it.

Thank you very much for all the informations, (Bow...) I've learned so many new things. :) Especialy from the links and databases.

I have followed Shigihara Toshifusa's account on Twitter. There's a picture with Matsumoto in it. He's the third one from left.

18 years have passed since I visited Japan in 2002. He's old now, but in some articles said that he's still active in 40 years old. :)
I asked dad and he said it was true, the sumo wrestler who was pictured with me at that time was Matsumoto from Ishikawa prefecture.
Feeling nostalgic. ^^

I saw some pics of him in Takudai sumo archives and somewhere else

The wrestler I found turned out not to be your guy.  Unfortunately, I don't read kanji so if he didn't turn pro, I'm afraid I can't help.  Based on the fact that no one can find your guy on the database leads me to believe that he remained an amateur.  He would only be in a heya if he had turned pro.  If he's 40, I would be very surprised if he's still active in sumo unless he's coaching amateurs.

I see, thanks for the informations.
I think he's not turned pro, maybe he just teaches amateur sumo at several universities, like Takushoku. :)

my dad was surprised when I showed him some of Matsumoto's pics. :-D

I don't know that dad still remembered too.

He's the current chairman of the Kanazawa City Sumo Federation, explains why he's holding a fan in one of the photos that has "Kanazawa City" written on it.

Ohh, I see.. I think it looks same with the text written in this Mawashi that Shiroyama worn when he fought Masakatsu Kamatani from Saitama Sakae. And then the next he worn are Toyo daigaku. Am I right ?

Is the white and dark blue are Toyo Daigaku Mawashi, but with different designs ?

And what Matsumoto-san do since he became the current chairman  of the Kanazawa City Sumo Federation ?

Sorry for asked so many questions, I am interested to learn more about sumo.

I hope I can visit Japan again someday when the Pandemic is over.
