Kamitsuumi 86 Posted January 12 Quote Ring names held by yokozuna are referred to as "tomena" names, and they're withdrawn from use after the wrestler retires from the ring. Except for those who inherit the names as disciples, no other sumo wrestlers can take them. Tomena are the names that are not reused, not the shikona of yokozuna, although the former is mostly a subset of the latter.

I've spot Hifumiyama and Hero on the unusual shikona list at the wiki in Japanese; maybe someone can translate the whole thing better than online translators: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/四股名#変わった四股名 still can't find them on the database Edited January 13 by Totorofuji

I think this one, 三ッ△ 鶴吉, is the most intriguing given the triangle in the middle, but i'm not an expert in Japanese reading... Although, i'm trying to keep this going as it is a very interesting topic. Edited January 13 by sahaven111

I've always wanted to know more about the different meanings of the shikona.
sumojoann 471 Posted January 18 (edited) Here's an interesting wikipedia article about shikona https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shikona I found it especially interesting that shikona for the Mongolian wrestlers often incorporate words that mean a lot in their culture, like eagle, horse, wolf and dragon. sumojoann 471 Posted January 18 (edited) Here is a really old thread (from 2003) with shikona meanings but it's so interesting I decided to post it http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/1315-shikona-meanings/ The following thread is from 2015 and is part 2 to the original thread (see above) about shikona meanings http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/33875-shikona-meanings-take-2/?tab=comments#comment-278281 Edited January 18 by sumojoann
