It is now 17 years I started setting a poll about Hakuho!  Will this one be the last one? (I asked that question last year too.)

Please add a comment with your prediction below - and also say how many zensho yushos you think he'll win in 2020, for the fourth question to this poll.

Please also predict if and when you think he will retire this year for a new fifth question!

1 yusho in January (13-2). He is not to be underestimated. He will withdrawal early from one of the next two basho and not compete in the other (so, no zensho-yusho), and he will then retire on the final day of the special two-day tournament in between the olympics and paraolympics, around August 19 r whenever they actually hold the tournament.

He'll win January. Thirty wins over 3 basho entered. The one he finishes is the one he wins. No zensho. He'll retire around September.

Yusho in Hatsu and Natsu, no zensho.

Retires during the Olympic opening ceremony, where he lights the Olympic flame (as the last holder) wearing his yokozuna belt, then untie his belt and drop it on the floor as a signal of his retirement* (while 99% of the wievership doesnt get a clue of what is happening).

* not really

I'll go against my instincts (and against answers in other polls perhaps):

2 yusho

no zensho

51 wins

10 win streak

Still active in 2022! (I thought he would retire in 2020, but now who knows?)

He'll win one yusho but only complete two basho and will be retired by the end of the year. 30 wins max.

Well... And just like that my prediction is already wrong before even 1 day of Sumo in 2021 (Carriedawayonastretcher...)

Four-fifths of us think that there is still some juice left in the old GOAT, as he is predicted to win one or two bashos this year.

His spread for wins seems to be mostly between 25 and 40 wins - which is much lower than what he was once worth.

His longest win streak seems likely to be between 9 and 13, based on our opinions. He remains on zero going into March, after his January no-show.

As a body, we don't think he will win any zensho yushos, and we seem to think that he will go intai in the latter half of the year - maybe after a starring role at the Tokyo Olympics?

I wonder if I will be making an 18th annual poll for Hakuho....  (Scratchingchin...)

Let's see how the dust settles at the end of the year (or possibly earlier, if he does go intai), and decide a poll yusho winner.

Hakuho won one yusho in 2021. That was predicted by Tsubame, Ryoshishokunin, Churaumi, Benihana, Kintamayama, Godango, Shinobi Steve, pricklypomegranate, ScreechingOwl, Morty, Getayukata and Pitinosato - a little over a third of us.

Only MumboJumbo predicted that he would get one zensho.

Hakuho picked up seventeen wins over the year.  Jomangor and Getayukata came closest predicting 19-20.  (It should be noted that in her comments, Getayukata says '28 wins' for the year...., which should probably count against her?)

His longest win streak for the year, was his 15 wins required for the zensho yusho. The closest (with 14) was autotroph.   Tsubame, Bombur, Shatsume and Getayukata all came close with 13.

If we presume that 'in Aki' = in September, then Tsubame, Churaumi, ScreechingOwl and Getayukata were all correct.

Despite her inconsistency with the 'wins' in a year (which I am guessing was an honest mistake), Getayukata is the clear winner for this poll, and can claim the yusho. (Yushowinner...) Omedetou.

Tsubame is awarded the jun-yusho. (Secondprize...)

@Getayukata @Tsubame

I am really sorry that there will not be an 18th annual Hakuho poll.

I feel rather privileged that I have been able to watch the sumo career from start to finish of the greatest rikishi of all time - and one of the greatest sports people of all time.
