Indeed and that’s the trick with Japanese and why you should learn the actual words behind the sounds and the phonology of the language. Same with shikona. Once you are familiar with the kanji in shikona, they’re not difficult to read.
hakutorizakura 590 Posted December 7, 2020 And even if you can't read kanji/kana, it's useful to keep in mind that Japanese words are in most cases constructed from syllables that end with a vowel. So it's shi-ta-te-na-ge, not otherwise. Wa-ka-ta-ka-ka-ge. Ta-ka-ke-i-shō. To-tta-ri. To-ri-na-o-shi. Pa-n-da. I guess some foreigners went to visit Takeshita-dori in Harajuku for certain reasons

It's a whole mess of alternating vowels and consonants in Romaji (with 3 "ka"s), but when you know how it breaks out into Kanji, it's a whole lot easier to comprehend because there's more context for those "ka"s. I find it very hard to believe that someone doing Japanese broadcasting would have trouble with it at all; they'd have to basically not even be trying to learn it by kanji.
Yamanashi 3,728 Posted December 7, 2020 Well, at least I learned that the rikishi haircut is not the same as a D&D wizard.
Asojima 2,870 Posted December 7, 2020 (edited) Kintamayama should regenerate his old link giving the proper pronunciation of the shikonas. The syllables that get emphasized make a big difference in the way it is expressed. The foreigners who I know are all fully aware that the penultimate syllable is always emphasized. As I mentioned in an earlier post, it doesn't really matter how you pronounce it because most foreigners do not know anyone who knows anything about sumo. Edit: Audio Banzuke - I did not realize that its remnants still exist. Edited December 8, 2020 by Asojima

Yokozuna Hattorizakura 151 Posted December 9, 2020 Don't know why people have trouble with wakatakakage, I have 0 japanese knowledge besides being able to (poorly) read kana and it rolls right off the tongue for me. Double vowels like chiyonoo cause me trouble at times though.
