Non-K-November basho 2020 Discussion (spoiler space)

Recommended Posts

Return-from-hell to makuuchi and the same treatment as a new makuuchi: 10 wins required for the kanto-sho and Chiyonokuni got it. After Aminishiki getting it age-reduced even with kachi-koshi, a fair decision.

Tobizaru didn't know what to do with Enho who took advantage of it.   A good win for Enho.   Not so much for Hoshoryu who gets an MK.  Come back 20lbs heavier in the right places and he will go far.   He got techniques and quickness but not enough power/strength.

Damn!  Akiseyama pulled out his 9th win.  I was hoping he would be the Tokushoryu/Shimanoumi for Hatsu 21.  He will probably be overpromoted.

The 2020 magic might be gone next year.

Tobizaru let Enho get the belt and seriously paid for it. Enho took advantage of Tobizaru's inexperience with him and lack of yotsu skill and fought with great determination and heart shoving the flying monkey off the dohyo. He certaintly didn't let the Mr Spoiler ruin Senshuraku for him. A deep MK for Hakuho's littlest of henchmen and certain demotion to Juryo but I hope he gains some weight, gets some new techniques and study Midorifuji as well, who shows just how it's done. I was deeply disappointed as an Enho fan, but will nevertheless pay attention to him next basho.

Yeah, I called that Hoshoryu was not going to make it - but at least he wouldn't be demoted back to Juryo.

Some hanamichi reports off the NHK broadcast:

  • Enho has had wrist and neck injuries for the whole basho
  • Hokutofuji has been practicing hidari-yotsu with Okinoumi, explaning his newfound competencies
  • Two prizes from Fukuoka - the Fukuoka Governor's and Fukuoka City Mayor's - are being prepared for the prize presentation ceremony later.

Yup. If Enho doesn't choose to get the surgery, he better start gaining weight and stop doing the submarine tachiai. That tactic is definitely unsustainable. You don't see Ishiura, Terutsuyoshi or Midorifuji doing that stuff and getting specifically neck injuries. And yes, Hokutofuji was surprised me greatly with his belt skills this basho - if he keeps this up, he'll be back in his rightful sanyaku spot in no time.

Good lord, that ending to the Daieisho-Kotoshoho bout was like something out of a comedy.

Kotoshoho and Daieisho used every inch of the dohyo there. Rematch!

Mono-ii on the rematch. Let's have another one!

I am not surprised.  He probably should get used to it.  His style of sumo & his size = injury prone.

Between you and me, I'm surprised he doesn't have leg and back injuries from some of his losses.

Heck is going on with this Kotoshoho-Daieisho match??!

I don't understand this: Nishikido has had trouble saying anything coherently when explaining monoii decisions for years now. Why do they keep subjecting him to this? Oh, I see there was a second monoii. At least he got the second one out of the way with minimum fuss.

Nishikido delivers another classic mono-ii announcement. Please never change.

edit: 2 in the same bout! But he doesn't maul it the 2nd time.

I am blessed that I don't understand Japanese much.

I understand enough to understand it was a trainwreck, but it's mostly Greek Japanese to me anyway.

This has been a very entertaining day of bouts so far. Lots of energy and gutsy scrapping on the dohyo today.

Arguably some of Takayasu's best sumo this whole basho today. No nonsense, straight in and low; good to see some lessons from Araiso sank in when it mattered. Now if only he can do that consistently...

He's not the only ex-ozeki having a good basho. Tochinoshin has reinvented his tachiai and looks his strongest ever since his ozeki run, and Terunofuji...

I don't think Tochinoshin will ever make it back to the sanyaku ranks, but him being in the joi (and therefore holding the keys to Hatsu 2021's yusho) certainly makes things more interesting.

Edit: Well done to Mitakeumi arresting his fall into the hiramaku ranks, but this is a definite blow to the Ozeki goal.

I expected a lot more from Takarafuji there. He's been strong all basho, but chose today to barely exert himself.

Mitakeumi scuppered his ozeki chances once he lost 2 in the first week.

Will Daieisho make it back to sanyuku rank in the next basho?   Mitakeumi's win today may have be good enough for him to stay at Komusubi.  Perhaps, Daieisho gets a third Komusubi spot?

Hard to tell. It might be a package deal kind of thing - either we get 4 komusubi with Daieisho and Hokutofuji or they both get jammed at M1. I can see both happening.
