Non-K-November basho 2020 Discussion (spoiler space)

Come January it will be a little shy of five years since his one 4-11 makekoshi appearance at M16. I’m sure he’ll be hoping to get the coveted M17 spot this time.

M17 or bust!

Although I want Ura to take the Juryo yusho, I think Midorifuji deserves it.

Elvis beats one of my many favorites, Meisei.

The great Japanese hope Kotonowak is now on the verge of MK.  Come on, dude.  One more win.

Akua gets his debut KK.

Incidentally, how have we made it to day 14 without anyone remarking that he’s wearing an akuamarine coloured mawashi?

Was that a henka by Ichinojo?  LOL.  Serves Aoiyama right.  He has done his share of henka IMO.

Just realized Fujiazuma lost again today in Juryo. Senshuraku is his last chance to avoid zenpai only one basho after Oki did the same.

Ooh ... sotokomata. Very rare! First for five years in any division, 15 in Makuuchi (Kyokushuzan in Jan 2005. Seems he was something of a sotokomata specialist as four of the last six in the top division were by him.)

It also was a courtesy to Akua, who thus didn't have to wait as long as Hokutofuji to continue his NHK kachikoshi interview. Akua revealed that he was fighting with the after-effects from being in a car accident on day 5.

With that many kyujo in the top ranks, who always have the most shikiri preparation time, the gyoji are those with the task to play for time and delay the bouts: the Chiyonokuni bout matta calls amount filled 2 minutes.

This obsession with the perfect tachi-ai is the only thing that makes the basho boring for me.

Well fought, Shimanoumi. Though Terunofuji got the belt immediately and it wasn't an oshi game, he didn't make it a walkover, even if he was M17.

Looks like Terunofuji has two chances to win - (1) Mitakeumi spoils Takakeisho's lead or (2) defeat the Ozeki twice. I sincerely hope its the first.

Shimanoumi loses but, just as yesterday, he loses well. He should feel good about how he’s held his own against sanyaku opponents.

Day 15 promises a great climax now whatever happens in the Takakeisho-Mitakeumi bout. It’s either a straight decider between Takakeisho and Terunofuji at 12-2 or Terunofuji fighting to force the playoff against a 13-1 Takakeisho. The bout schedulers will be pleased things are going to script.

Considering Mitakeumi's current form, option 1 doesn't seem likely. I do agree it would make very compelling viewing for day 15 though.

I generally like an underdog story. I'm glad there is no chance for another M17 yusho though. Three in one year would have been too much. One would have been enough.

Kotoshoho turned the tables on Takayasu. Firstly, he was out of balance, but Takayasu did not finish him off. Then the former Ozeki himself was out of balance and one side thrust from the young brave and he was down. He still has a chance to get KK tomorrow, but my chief concern is that he was limping off the dohyo. Kotoshoho continues to deliver Hakuho-esque rank progression...

Fantastic performance by Takanosho - it's still Sekiwake for him next basho. He didn't give Takarafuji any opportunity to attack at all. But Takarafuji deserves a special prize in my opinion if he gets double digit wins tomorrow.

Takakeisho in the past got injured severely in bouts against Mitakeumi. Even if Takakeisho wins, an injury would make it easy for Terunofuji to win 2.

Takanosho hasn’t had much attention this basho, but he’s now secured a KK in his Sekiwake debut. Very nice indeed. We could have three Sekiwake in January if Mitakeumi wins in a couple of minutes (and tomorrow).

He is one impressive young pup.

Takanosho gets his KK.  He is a late bloomer.  I expect him to make a run at the Ozeki rank.

Tobizaru has been also impressive despite his MK.

Well ... Mitakeumi wasn’t there at all, was he? Total pants.

Takakeisho is at least guaranteed a “D” tomorrow, so a rope run could be on regardless of the result (though I lean towards a D not being quite enough for him yet.)

Noooooo!

Takakeisho remains in the sole leader. Makuuchi victory 200 for the Ozeki.

Knowing Terunofuji's record against him, I think it's a tsuna run and crazy Hatsu next year.

Takakeisho with overwhelming force, Mitakeumi looses to his biggest foe, the week 2 trend of his.

That will be a tense final tomorrow!

Tomorrow will be great. Terunofuji can take it if he wants it. Of course it'll be difficult to win twice, but he still has a chance and it'll great for us to watch.
