Akinomaki 39,497 Posted October 20, 2020 (edited) Still no basho thread, so I have to make a first one The gomen-fuda was put in place today at the kokugikan for the Non-Kyushu November basho o On 15/10/2020 at 14:55, Akinomaki said: Travel agencies already offer tours to the non-Kyushu basho intended for 2 persons per masu seat box. And the government subsidizes tours (from inside of Japan) to the basho with up to 50% of tour costs within the GoTo Travel campaign (35% as reduced costs, 15% as coupon). https://www.hankyu-travel.com/tour/detail_d.php?p_course_id=3G311BA&p_hei=10 http://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiInformation/detail?id=396 Edit: accordingly, a limit of 5000 persons per day is planned http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20201015/sum20101520390003-n1.html On 19/10/2020 at 08:50, Kintamayama said: The number of spectators allowed this coming November basho will be raised to 5000 (was 2500 last basho), it was decided today. Two allowed in each masu-seki (usually for four). Normal chairs-one empty chair in all directions between the spectators. The tamari-zeki (the ones around the dohyo) will be open as well (were closed), but limited to rows five and seven and to officials and staff only. Masks at all times when not on the dohyo (masks will be distributed to those that forgot) or around it, temperature checks, etc. Food stalls will be re- installed (last basho no sale of food was allowed) and sale of merchandise will resume. "I'm glad we can get more people to watch. We will be very vigilant in protecting their safety and will be extra careful to take temperatures. We will deploy serious counter-measures!" declared Shibatayama PR man. Ticket sales will again only be on the official web site http://sumo.pia.jp/sumo11.jsp (only the Japanese side) - but you can also buy a ticket with a subsidized GoTo Travel campaign tour from your home prefecture - the pages above only are for Kumamoto (Shodai) and the Metropolitan areas though. Applications for the pre-advance sales ticket lottery have started today and end already Thursday, results to be announced the same day. But this time they first make a secondary ticket lottery, applications start on Saturday, again for 2 days, later the day the result. This basho the lottery is only for masu seats, not for the chair (nor the VIP box) seats. The masu S, the first 4 rows are back on sale and in the lottery. They made sure you have to go through all the explanations before you find your way to the application page. Official advance ticket sales start on Oct 27th 11h JST. Rules at the basho are basically the same, no loud cheering, no alcohol (if it is found out that you brought some, it will be confiscated - but you won't get thrown out). Refrain from eating and drinking at your seat (except for the necessary drink to keep you hydrated) - only do that at the designated "Food and Drink" spaces, (Shibatayama on YT:) outside of the kokugikan). In the masu boxes, the zabuton are placed in a diagonal. If you want to have seats close together, for the masu seats you can apply for up to 6 two person masu boxes in a row in the lottery, later on in the general sales you only can chose your seat position for the chair seats, like last time. The NSK gives away tickets worth 100 000Yen as presents to their Twitter followers living in Japan who retweet this tweet: twitter.com/sumokyokai/status/1318068311742009344 (could that be the never sold ex-tickets for the day, now simple chair C?) Even if they not even get the same number of spectators as last basho, they will have sold the better masu seats at double the price and have the kokugikan look (on TV) twice as full. The first time two ex-Ozeki have been ranked in lower sanyaku after having been ranked lower since their time as Ozeki? Closest I've seen is Tochizauma being temporarily at Sekiwake between Ozeki stints when Miyabiyama was at the same rank between maegashira stints. I looked at the entire history from when Dejima was demoted with Takanonami having been demoted a bit earlier and Miyabiyama the next basho, through to when Dejima retired, and didn't find any cases of two of those three being in sanyaku at the same time. Dejima and MIyabiyama certainly did return to sanyaku many times, just never at the same time. I don't know any other periods where there would have been two ex-Ozeki floating around where this could have happened before. RabidJohn 1,628 Posted October 26, 2020 @Akinomaki Probably unintentional, but that title sounds vaguely like something I'd shout at another driver (as in 'You stupid @#&%$ nonk!'). How about 'NoFuku'?

How about 'NoFuku'? Yeah, I liked the sound of it, not actually a word, but interesting. If it is disturbing, I'll change it, but not to NoF*k. Edit: the Olympic touch (in German) now is not that pleasing for my taste, but fits the year Edited October 26, 2020 by Akinomaki

pricklypomegranate 730 Posted November 6, 2020 Not sure if this is the official official November basho, but here are the matches for Day 1. In Takakeisho vs. Takayasu, we'll see if Takayasu has still got it. We'll see whether injury-prone but degeiko-prepared Kiribayama can stand up to the nervous Asanoyama. And we'll see what Wakatakakage is made of against shin-Ozeki Shodai. If the Ozekis are going to break the 4-year drought in yusho, this is the time, with Hakuho and Kakuryu worse for wear. Interesting to see whether next-gen Maegashiras Takanosho, Tobizaru and Kotoshoho can hold on to their high ranks. Enho vs. Yutakayama on day 1. Why they gotta do him dirty like that? As much as I love him, I think it's make-koshi and demotion to juryo for him unfortunately. I hope the Hakuho weight gain plan is working and that I am wrong about my prediction.
Akinomaki 39,497 Posted November 6, 2020 A bit on dohyo preparation vid The NSK again streams live the dohyo-matsuri Neither day 1 nor day 15 are near to be sold out. The masu seats are sold out only on the weekends http://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va11.jsp With 2 persons per regular or large masu box, the originally 1 to 3 person masu seats are sold as 1 person masu this time. If nobody wants to create the basho discussion thread, I'll change this one into it.
Akinomaki 39,497 Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) The NSK tries to bring back a bit of extra service for the spectators at the kokugikan: lotteries after the end of the torikumi of days 1-14, over which oyakata and yobidashi preside, while presenting some inside stories - separated into 4 groups. http://www.sumo.or.jp/Watching/guide/Nov/enjoy/602/ 50 000 packages of the new specialty Kokugikan curry are prepared - to pray for a sell-out of that, a giant one as photo spot is put in place o Also on sale are masks produced in collaboration with Under Armour o The regional coupons the people also might have got for booking a GoTo travel tour to the kokugikan can be used in all shops in the kokugikan. Support can be done not also with towels, also with rubber bands of your favorite rikishi o Special rikishi version of Kitkat are new on sale as well o Edited November 6, 2020 by Akinomaki
Seiyashi 4,068 Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) Wow. I genuinely want to get my hands on some of that merch. The mask looks great and so do the KitKats. Would probably give the rubber bands a pass though - so '00s, and not very visible compared to a good old towel! (Insider joke re KitKats for those wondering about chocolates being a bit random - pronounced as "kitto katto" in Japanese, they sound similar to "always win". KitKats are super popular in Japan for that reason, and the number of variant flavours that come out of Japan is insane.)
