Still no basho thread, so I have to make a first one

The gomen-fuda was put in place today at the kokugikan for the Non-Kyushu November basho

Applications for the pre-advance sales ticket lottery have started today and end already Thursday, results to be announced the same day. But this time they first make a secondary ticket lottery, applications start on Saturday, again for 2 days, later the day the result. This basho the lottery is only for masu seats, not for the chair (nor the VIP box) seats. The masu S, the first 4 rows are back on sale and in the lottery. They made sure you have to go through all the explanations before you find your way to the application page.

Official advance ticket sales start on Oct 27th 11h JST. Rules at the basho are basically the same, no loud cheering, no alcohol (if it is found out that you brought some, it will be confiscated - but you won't get thrown out). Refrain from eating and drinking at your seat (except for the necessary drink to keep you hydrated)  - only do that at the designated "Food and Drink" spaces, (Shibatayama on YT:) outside of the kokugikan).

In the masu boxes, the zabuton are placed in a diagonal. If you want to have seats close together, for the masu seats you can apply for up to 6 two person masu boxes in a row in the lottery, later on in the general sales you only can chose your seat position for the chair seats, like last time.

The NSK gives away tickets worth 100 000Yen as presents to their Twitter followers living in Japan who retweet this tweet: twitter.com/sumokyokai/status/1318068311742009344 (could that be the never sold ex-tickets for the day, now simple chair C?)

Even if they not even get the same number of spectators as last basho, they will have sold the better masu seats at double the price and have the kokugikan look (on TV) twice as full.

The secondary ticket lottery now is reduced to those masu seat groups not already sold out in the first round. Day 15 and the masu S seats are gone, on the weekends also masu A, but already there is a resale, with also a few masu S seats. http://sumo.pia.jp/ticketInformation.do?lotRlsCd=63341

- Shodai first new ozeki from Tokitsukaze beya since Yutakayama in Haru 1963
- Shodai first new ozeki from Kumamoto prefecture since Tochihikari in Nagoya 1962
- Shodai is the second ozeki from Tokyo Agricultural University since Yutakayama II. He is the 9th collegiate wrestler overall
- Shodai is the 7th oldest ozeki promotion at 28 years and 10 months in the current basho format (since 1958)
- Mitakeumi is at sekiwake and in sanyaku for the 3rd consecutive basho
- Takanosho makes his sekiwake debut and is the second shin-sekiwake from Chiganoura beya since Takakeisho did it in January of 2019. This is also his first basho in sanyaku overall
- Takanosho is also the first shin-sekiwake from Chiba prefecture since Kotofuji back in Nagoya 1990. For shin-sanyaku it would be since Wakakoyu in Hatsu 2012
- Terunofuji is ranked at komusubi for the first time in his career. This is his first basho in sanyaku since Kyushu 2017 and ending a 17 basho absence
- Terunofuji is the first ex-ozeki to fall out of sanyaku and then make his debut at komusubi
- Terunofuji is the first wrestler with sanyaku experience to fall all the way to jonidan and return to the sanyaku ranks
- Takayasu is ranked at komusubi for the first time since Hatsu 2017. This is his first return to the sanyaku ranks since Hatsu 2020
- Akua makes his makuuchi debut and is the 5th top division debut from Tatsunami beya since the current shisho took over. Heyamate Hoshoryu debuted last basho
- Akua is the 13th post-war top division debut from Ibaraki prefecture since Takayasu in Nagoya 2011
- Chiyonokuni returns to makuuchi since Haru 3019
- Chiyonokuni is the 3rd rikishi to fallen from makuuchi to below makushita twice and successfully returned both times. The other two rikishi were Wakanoyama and Tamaasuka
- Chiyonokuni is the first wrestler since Endo in Aki 2013 to reach makuuchi after only spending one basho in juryo after having been promoted from makushita
- Kotonowaka returns to makuuchi since July 2020
- Kotoyuki returns to makuuchi since July 2020
- Kotoyuki is promoted to makuuchi for the 9th time. This ties him for 5th place with Wakanokuni and Kasuganishiki
- Chiyoshoma returns to makuuchi since Natsu 2019

One thing they didn't mention, and maybe it's a little too trivial, but is this the first time there have been two ex-Ozeki ranked at Komusubi?  The first time two ex-Ozeki have been ranked in lower sanyaku after having been ranked lower since their time as Ozeki?  Closest I've seen is Tochizauma being temporarily at Sekiwake between Ozeki stints when Miyabiyama was at the same rank between maegashira stints.  I looked at the entire history from when Dejima was demoted with Takanonami having been demoted a bit earlier and Miyabiyama the next basho, through to when Dejima retired, and didn't find any cases of two of those three being in sanyaku at the same time.  Dejima and MIyabiyama certainly did return to sanyaku many times, just never at the same time.  I don't know any other periods where there would have been two ex-Ozeki floating around where this could have happened before.

Yeah, I liked the sound of it, not actually a word, but interesting. If it is disturbing, I'll change it, but not to NoF*k.

Edit: the Olympic touch (in German) now is not that pleasing for my taste, but fits the year

Not sure if this is the official official November basho, but here are the matches for Day 1. 

In Takakeisho vs. Takayasu, we'll see if Takayasu has still got it. 

We'll see whether injury-prone but degeiko-prepared Kiribayama can stand up to the nervous Asanoyama. 

And we'll see what Wakatakakage is made of against shin-Ozeki Shodai. 

If the Ozekis are going to break the 4-year drought in yusho, this is the time, with Hakuho and Kakuryu worse for wear. 

Interesting to see whether next-gen Maegashiras Takanosho, Tobizaru and Kotoshoho can hold on to their high ranks. 

Enho vs. Yutakayama on day 1. Why they gotta do him dirty like that?  As much as I love him, I think it's make-koshi and demotion to juryo for him unfortunately. I hope the Hakuho weight gain plan is working and that I am wrong about my prediction.

Neither day 1 nor day 15 are near to be sold out. The masu seats are sold out only on the weekends http://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va11.jsp With 2 persons per regular or large masu box, the originally 1 to 3 person masu seats are sold as 1 person masu this time.

Wow. I genuinely want to get my hands on some of that merch. The mask looks great and so do the KitKats. Would probably give the rubber bands a pass though - so '00s, and not very visible compared to a good old towel!

(Insider joke re KitKats for those wondering about chocolates being a bit random - pronounced as "kitto katto" in Japanese, they sound similar to "always win". KitKats are super popular in Japan for that reason, and the number of variant flavours that come out of Japan is insane.)
