Ex-Taka-twins activities

He was actually brave, going from pouncing on puroresu guys (and a geriatric Minowaman who's definitely not going to have a healthy life as a senior) straight to facing the finest that Japanese heavyweight MMA has to offer. Wonder what'll happen from here.

Before his next fight

On 04/10/2021 at 14:14, Akinomaki said:

The next opponent for our Mr. Sudario is SAINT (28, from NY), active marine at Yokosuga airbase.

he is already thinking about a rematch of the fight he lost: "It will turn into a brawl." Sudario has trained for two months in a gym in the US and wants to use what he learnt.

His relationship with his (a few minutes) older brother is similar to that of his ex-oyakata to his, the oniisan: "We had no communication (after the drug scandal emerged). Intention to ask him to join the fighting world? None at all.  I hate it to be active in the same world, I hated that since we were in the sumo world." https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/fight/rizin/3740875/

Ex-Takanofuji today won that fight, a quick K.O. in the first round

I'll put the twins back together into one thread though.

Takagenji has joined Takatoriki-beya and seems to remain connected to sumo for the while, after this initial appearance

Takagenji was on Takatoriki's Channel on the 10th and apologized. Takatoriki had some reminiscence of his own scandal, got furious that the NSK doesn't pay any retirement money and promised to gather all his friends to organize a danpatsushiki for Takagenji

he had 2 more appearances

and then was put back into training by Takatoriki - degeiko at a sumo club:

At 4-1, Takanofuji is probably the most successful ex-sumo mma fighter of all time lol. Doesn't look too bad of a fighter either, that latest KO was beautiful.

Any MMA fans here able to weigh in? is he the real deal? It seems most of his opponents were cans, and he lost pretty handily to the only really legit looking guy.

That is in line with my take. He'll be a passable sideshow heavyweight in the mostly domestic scene. But for him being an ex-rikishi, you likely wouldn't hear of him. I don't anticipate him "making it" and moving internationally to One, Bellator, and certainly not the UFC. He simply doesn't have the skills or athleticism. I also don't see him taking a Rizin championship, but the heavyweight division in a lot of Japanese organizations tends to be very thin.

Not that there is anything wrong with any of that in the slightest. Just like "only" making it to Juryo isn't something to sneer at, having your name known as a fighter regionally is nothing to scoff at. I don't like the guy given his attitude, but I certainly respect his willingness to get into the MMA ring and compete. He may be being fed some cans, and there's always the spectre of matchfixing, but for the most part he's throwing down with guys looking to knock him out, and that takes some guts.

3 rikishi watched the fight (at times that would lead to their expulsion), maybe his former tsukebito. Hokutenkai, the nephew of Takanoiwa is easy to spot:

Ex-Takagenji apparently is in contact with RIZIN, he watched an event on the 28th and RIZIN declared they are in contact with him, so he may join his brother as MMA fighter after all.

On Instagram stories he made some replies to the negative comments he got on the net about allegations he had made about Takanohana-beya on Takatoriki's channel, the heya for the chanko had about 2000 yen per day, Takanohana hadn't talked to him for months after being angry with him etc.

Takagenji had his danpatsu-shiki on Oct. 31st and during the basho completed (apologizing) his list of rikishi fighting earnest (gachinko) in makuuchi from Aki (youtube=vhicJ-lSlYc) plus on request gave the juryo list. 25 of 41 given as gachinko and 13 in juryo, plus likely the new juryo. The foreigners and many of those from university were yaocho, Wakatakakage, Yutakama and Asanoyama not. (youtube=u2ZF1Z5EOEI)

Ex-Takanofuji does not like this, he'd absolutely hate it if Takagenji should use the same ring-name of Sudario, and: "I have no contact with him, no relation."

Sudario will appear in RIZIN.33 on New Year's Eve.

These 2 going to end up fighting each other then? Takagenji was better at sumo, but Takanofuji looks like he might have found his thing with MMA.

Takagenji has another channel to get invited to

several times already, the last time talking about the yaocho of Chiyonofuji, the preferred subject of Itai, the usual old yaocho talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ozEQdw0xaU

before that about the death of "Yaocho" author Onaruto-oyakata and his friend at the same time, same hospital, same cause https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v35wdPmFLXw

Takatoriki also is now a regular at that channel, both appeared there about a month ago

Takagenji will start under the ring name of Takakenshin 貴賢神 and hinted on SNS at a debut as MMA fighter next year. https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/fight/rizin/3886040/

Uesugi Kenshin 上杉 謙信 is the senkoku period daimyo revered by Takanohana

It seems like the a**-whooping he got from Shoma has taught him a lot of humility.

Takagenji/Takakenshin was on the stage of RIZIN 33 today and announced his debut as MMA fighter in RIZIN next hear: "Dear RIZIN fans, not Sudario, Takakenshin is what I'm called." He wants to devote himself to make the heavy weight and RIZIN Japan the world standard for martial arts. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/news/202112310000624.html

Just to build on my previous analysis, as we know Takanofuji lost to Shoma Shibisai in what was seen as the former rikishi's first real challenge. Shoma recently had another match in Rizin for the usually New Year's Eve show, taking on Hideki "Shrek" Sekine. Shoma lost that latest match by referee stoppage due to being grounded and pounded by Shrek in the second round.

While it sounds like Shoma was winning solidly until he wasn't, he ultimately lost to a 48 year old with a generally limited skill set. Please don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of Shrek, and love watching him grapple both gi and no-gi. He's an excellent pure grappler, and I highly recommend watching his grappling matches. But as an MMA fighter, he's...not excellent, and feels like a throwback to when a good grappler could win without ever learning any real striking skills. While he's done fine in Japan, internationally he's appeared in One Championship on three occasions, and lost all three outings (including suffering one of the promotion's fastest knockout ever against Alan Ngalani).

All that to say, the domestic heavyweight MMA talent pool in Japan is pretty shallow, and while Takanofuji may do fine there, have some fun, and make some money, he's not likely to be a fighter of any real note (even allowing for some improvement in his skills). While one can't conclude that because A beat B, and B beat C, A can beat C, it's at least a starting point analytically.

Caveat as before: none of the above is intended to be dismissive or belittling, and a passable career as a pro fighter is impressive in its own right regardless of ultimate relative success. Also, having trained with a few MMA fighters in the past I am well aware any of the fighters discussed here would smash me.
