New recruits Aki 2020

Recommended Posts

Only 1- Isenoumi beya has a Mongolian, 23 years old,1.81/134 , out of powerhouse Tottori Jouhoku high school. Underwent the tests, results soon.バットトクトホ・トゥルトクトホ Battotoktoho Tortoktoho? If I'm not mistaken, this is the first ever foreign rikishi in Isenoumi. Right? Oh, not counting Itadaki the half- Canadian, who is listed as Japanese.

トゥルトクトホ graduated from Doshisha university and uses the relaxed rule for achieved athletes to join after reaching the age of 23, but below 25. His debut will be after he gets the proper performance visa. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20200908/sum20090817570003-n1.html

As captain he led the Doshisha-team to the semifinals in last year's student championships - univ. page in the google cache - after quite some matta drama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIiEhsNbyLo&t=5m43s

Gotta love those Mongolian names. If he was a machine, I would call repair service.

No maezumo this basho it seems - Shikihide-beya's Reon is ready to return after over a year out with a knee injury, but he'll go straight onto the next banzuke as they couldn't find a playmate for him.

Confirmed, no maezumo is the first time ever since the start of the present system in the Showa 40s (1965-74). http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202009150000145.html

This certainly isn’t a record to be happy about. Surely, Covid has a part to play? Hopefully, things will get back to normal with more recruits in the future.

The sai-shusse of Reon was announced today, day 6 https://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20200918/sum20091814560004-n1.html - the day for an ichiban shusse, which properly now only still happens for Haru, where enough new recruits enter

Nikkan confirms it, Isenoumi: "He's a good stimulus for the heya"

He was introduced to the heya by a Doshisha related person, that was the entry card into this traditional heya with ancient roots, the first Isenoumi was on the first present style banzuke in 1757. The heya's Kabutoyama-(Oikari) and Tatekawa-oyakata (Tosanoumi) also are from Do-dai, Battogtokh is the 5th overall from that university to enter the heya. Isenoumi about having a foreigner now: "At the (job) interview before joining, he appeared to be a serious, good boy. There are 2 OBs as well, so it's fine. Limited just to this kid, I accepted to take him in."

He's already adjusted to life in the heya and has makushita level strength and skill.

Nagoya 2007 and 2018 had 0 new recruits, but enough from banzuke-gai to have maezumo. Sometime till 1986, the maezumo records were counted as part of the rikishi's career record, from Nagoya that year on this was discontinued and the NSK stopped to collect maezumo data.

We'll see if the numbers of new recruits continues to drop - Corona likely will make sure it does, from 91 in 2017 to 73 and 70 last year. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20200924/k00/00m/050/243000c

Only the maezumo records outside of Haru basho though, prior to July 1986, so for most rikishi they didn't count even then.
