Kimarite Statistics - July 2020

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi all, sorry for the delay but here are the kimarite statistics for the 2020 July basho. Terunofuji's quest for redemption took a big leap forwards as the former Ozeki took the yusho on his return to the top flight. And although Hakuho's basho was curtailed by a late kyujo, the Yokozuna had already done enough to clinch his 83rd Makuuchi kachi-koshi, surpassing former Ozeki Kaio's record of 82.

A total of 53 kimarite were used in this basho (the highest since 2017 Aki with 54), of which seven were making their first appearance of the year. Sekizuka got the ball rolling on Shonichi with a tokkurinage win. Later in the day, Fukuyama hauled Fukazawa down from behind for an okurihikiotoshi win. And still on the opening day, talented Matsuda picked up a ketaguri win - he's used plenty of leg trips and kicks during his sumo career, but surprisingly this is his first ketaguri.

On Day 2, Sazanami toppled Kotokume at the edge with an ipponzeoi, although as you can see in the video it was quite unusual as he combined the shoulder throw with a kakenage leg lift. Elsewhere on the second day, Sorakaze collected the third susoharai win of his career.

On Day 3, rookie Wakaonehara produced a very welcome komatasukui leg grab win against Takasu, no video of it unfortunately. That kimarite has declined over the last decade or so and is about half as common as it was before. Lastly, Tanahashi got the second chongake win of his career on Senshuraku in a scrappy encounter with Chiyotenfu.

Hansoku also appeared for the first time in 2020, ending a run of three basho without any rule breaking, the longest since a five-basho spell almost a decade ago.

43-year-old Satonofuji produced a nice izori win against Miyakojima (see also the pictures below the table) - it's the 16th izori win of his long career, which is now just five bouts away from a total of 1,000.

Minor trivia - Tsukahara has passed 100 career bouts without winning or losing by yorikiri.

Kimarite from kettei-sen bouts are not included in the statistics.

Mildly interesting that Shitatedashinage and Shitatenage happened 7 and 5 times respectively, normally the "dashi" version of a throw is used far less often iirc.

There were 66 shitatenage here, you were looking at shitatehineri which had 5.

Brief moment of panic there when I thought I'd messed the table up! (Laughing...)

But he does have 3 losses by yoritaoshi, and if a rikishi really doesn't want to lose by yorikiri, it's pretty hard to force it if he's willing to stay standing until he falls backwards.  He's just waiting until reality forces him over than give up easily.

Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

Is the Oyakata on the left Wakanohana III? Sorry I'm not too good with Rikishi from the past :)
