It used to bother me as cocky showboating until I heard the story behind it. Apparently, the town or prefecture he hails from was badly devastated by the tsunami. Huge loss of life and property. Lots of trauma and ptsd for survivors. He does the salt routine to inspire those in his hometown and give them something thrilling to cheer them. I think any rikishi who know motive this could get behind it. There’s also a history of guys who threw big salt, like Mitoizumi

Terutsuyoshi was born in Hyougo prefecture (where Kobe is located) on the same day as the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. This prefecture was not affected by the 2011 tsunami although he might do his salt throwing routine to honor that tragedy. I have no idea why he does his routine.

There is always one sekitori (usually a low ranked makuuchi) who is the designated salt chucker.  If the chucker gets overly promoted or demoted, another rikishi will assume the duties.  I don't know the origin/history of this custom.

I'll see your salt and raise you more salt, courtesy of the great Murray Johnson.

Asanowaka held down the salt fort for a while, then Asahisho. Mitoizumi of course. Who else?

Kitazakura was a noted salt shaker during his career.

I’ll second this one about Takanosho. When the match started my initial reaction was why did he go head to head with Terunofuji, he has no chance! Shoulda henka’d!

Then a few seconds later he was pushing Terunofuji out of the dohyo like it was no big deal.

Another good day of sumo by my books.

That was also my thought. Then look at his ottsuke, excellent! Teru did get a kime hold eventually but it's too late for him.

It may be an indictment of the level of sumo in makunouchi that the match I am most looking forward to on Day 11 is Hokuseiho vs Shishi in jonidan.

I think I have the answer to this question. Hokuseiho did win against Shishi! He is now 6-0, sharing 1st place on the arasoi with Ofukasawa (and possibly Nabatame, who didn't fight today I think). The next obvious matches would be Hokuseiho vs. Ofukasawa and possible playoffs.

Ichinojo is an egg timer.  180 seconds after the first salt toss he quietly shuts down.

I must be getting my disasters mixed up. I believe I was relying on my shoddy memory of my reading of this article: http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ202001170046.html

I stand corrected and am now back to being annoyed by Terutsuyoshi's cocky showboating.

Ura loses to Tochiseiryu and his return to Juryo could be in jeopardy, now that Jokoryu has recovered to 3-3 at Ms1W, Chiyonoumi is 4-2 at Ms2E, and Naya above him at 4-2 at Ms4W.

I agree.  There could be about 5 juryo spots opening up.   Ura must win his last match and wait to see how others ahead of him do.

Inosuke has sufficiently recovered to also do the kaobure - a shaky day 12 torikumi presentation today

Nabatame fought and won in sandanme, so we have 3 men on 6-0. More than likely we will see a playoff.

Very unusual henka/hatakikomi from Hokutofuji. I guess he was 3-7 and had enough of his usual Vigorous Sumo for a little while.

Tobizaru continues to impress, as does Wakatakakage. Both remain in the yusho hunt.

A couple of shockers so far in the basho.

I had a feeling that Tobizaru would beat Onosho.  He didn't disappoint.   Tomorrow, it is Tobizaru vs Wakatakakage (that took a minute to spell).   I am going to still ride the monkey train.

Only one lower-ranking chaser shall remain... I also think Tobizaru will win tomorrow's match, but still stick with my yusho prediction that it will ultimately go to Shodai.

Fantastic pirouette by Enho. When Shimanoumi hit the oyakata I thought for sure his femur would snap like that gyoji. He was hobbling back to his cushion as well.

Good thing the ringside judges overturned that decision in Tochi vs Endo. I was afraid this was gonna be yet another poor decision against him, of which he's had a few in the past.

It was too obvious to overlook.  The credit goes to the one who called the monoii.  The video replay was crystal clear on who won.

I picked Shodai to win the whole thing.   If not, he needs to win at least 12 to get the Ozeki promotion.  Perhaps, 11 wins will still do.  But he'd better not leave it to chance.  Yusho or 12 wins!

Hopefully Takakeisho is alright. He seemed to have injured his right side.

A super commanding performance for Asanoyama.

Simultaneously, both ozeki dumped out the komusubi, meaning Terunofuji and Takanosho are in the sanyaku at least next basho.

NHK announcers were speculating that it was his neck, though he seemed normal after he brushed himself off and sat down.

It looks more like he overexerted his right arm, since he couldn't put any weight on it for a bit.
