Quite the niramiai from Takayasu. I think he may have spooked the little salt thrower a bit.

Had to look that one up!!!  Yes, that stare-down was really something!

What's more, there has never been any x-0-y record in the 15 bouts era with x>1. Now I'm rooting for Ishiura to get his eight.

I loved how Ishiura kicked Shimanoumi's fallen sagari out of the way, after he kept stepping on it during their bout.  Normally, wrestlers wait for the gyoji to snatch it away, but Ishiura got a little impatient when Kimura Akijiro failed to move in quicker.  Frankly, I don't know when the last time I've seen that happen in such dramatic fashion.

The sagari definitely add colour to oozumo, but I get the feeling that most wrestlers don't particularly like wearing them, and that they constitute a potential safety hazard.  What I love about them is how some wrestlers yank them out of their shikome after their bouts.  It's sort of a "can't wait to get this thing off" + "take that, loser" gesture.

... which tells one that rikishi in this situation really are injured, and they're still not tiptop when they re-enter.  I assume an oyakata could force a wrestler to go kyujo for the first y days because of a heya infraction, but it's the only reason I can think of that a rikishi could come back from several days off and still be a star on the dohyo.

The only one looking really good in sanyaku is Shodai. Beyond that, you'd have to go down to Takanosho for any decent performances.

Myogiryu is even decenterer.

Now I feel sorry for not having shut my trap. (Footinmouth...)

Not only did all west rikishi in the 2nd half of makuuchi lose today, they also all refused to give interviews.

According to @Kintamayama's review of press statements, the key culprits were Mitakeumi, Takakeisho, and Asanoyama.  I can see why Mitakeumi and Takakeisho were not in the mood, buuuuut...

I'm liking Terunofuji's attitude vis-a-vis the press in this tournament.  I think it bodes well for his chances in taking a second straight championship this time around.  "Refusing to give interviews" smack of frustration.

Oh, what a nice day of sumo. Gentle sumo, fierce sumo, slappy sumo, slapsticky sumo, long sumo, quick sumo, lot's of spirited sumo and in the end even sumo surprise m*f* sumo. And tonight party at Tochinoshin's. Biggest stack for him in ages and well deserved.

Not sure how big that party will be.  Tochinoshin still has a palace mansion to pay for back in Georgia! ;-)

With both Shohozan and Kotoshogiku struggling, Hakuho is bound to become the second oldest in Makuuchi. Maybe there is another record to be beaten there, but outlasting Tamawashi is a tall order.

As a side note, I really liked that  electrocardiogram print on that kimono.

Quite crazy how open it is. Takakeisho maybe the favorite but he's always in danger of a loss out of nowhere. Terunofuji looking really well and a great comeback this basho, but he has a hell of a tough test tomorrow with Hokutofuji, can't wait to see that one.

No, I think Terunofuji is the favourite now, as he has already fought all the men ranked above him. Takakeisho has to fight all the top boys in the second week. And of course, Terunofuji just happens to be the best wrestler in the basho.

Not to mention several of them are his kryptonite - Endo and Mitakeumi are on paper rikishi who can and will give him a really hard time (although perhaps not this particular basho), and there's also Asanoyama and Shodai who look in better form than him right now. Terunofuji is probably going to have the rest of the joi for breakfast; the only one I can even remotely imagine giving him trouble, style-wise, is Tochinoshin.

Asanoyama? I beg to differ. He seems to have discovered something nasty inside, needed to get that rope, but Takakeisho looked reeeeally strong after his first loss, and I'm quite sure he won't fall for henka a second time.

As for Mitakeumi, he hardly looks like sanyaku material now. If anyone it's Endo who can throw in a wrench for Takakeisho.

Yet it's also Endo who blows hot and cold to greater extremes than Mitakeumi. I think between the two of them one will probably defeat Takakeisho, and I wouldn't be surprised if both Asanoyama and Shodai beat Takakeisho, but I wouldn't be surprised either if Takakeisho beats one (but not both of them). So Takakeisho is looking at about what, 2 losses coming up?

That loss from Takakeisho definitely moves him down. but we can't have no tier 1 wrestlers, so we move Shodai, Terunofuji, and Takayasu up, technically at least, what was once tier 2 is now tier 1. Mitakeumi is down as well, he's hardly a yusho candidate. Everything else is a bit jumbled.

Tier 1: Takakeisho, Shodai, Terunofuji, Takayasu

Tier 2: Asanoyama, Kiribayama, Wakatakakage, Onosho

Tier 3: Takanosho, Takarafuji, Kagayaki, Kotoshoho, Tobizaru

Mere Fodder: Mitakeumi, Tochinoshin, Aoiyama, Kotoeko, Chiyotairyu, Meisei, Shimanoumi, Hoshoryu, Ichinojo

You have Takanosho listed in Tier 3 and also as Mere Fodder.

Asanoyama was East. He got the fusen off Yutakayama.

If the both-hands-down tachiai position is indeed the ideal, then why not have wrestlers on both sides place both fists down on or behind the shikirisen, and then the gyoji simply drops his gumbai fan to signal both men to start.  Et voila, no more mattas, and no more disgruntled fans.

If a rikishi refuses to get both hands down and is the cause of more than one matta, there could be a more drastic solution--disqualify him for that match. The idea of losing a bout for not following the rules can be a pretty good incentive to obey them. If there is disagreement among the shimpan with the gyoji's decision to disqualify, a mono-ii could be held to settle the situation.

Considering how unappealing it is for shinpans to get up for monoii from their comfortable seating position and the frequency of matta, probably that's not gonna work (not to mention that they would have to announce what they discussed during monoii, ooooh how dreadful) (Laughing...)
