Recommended Posts

Applications for the pre-advance sales ticket lottery start tomorrow, till the 3rd, only for the masu seats this time. Advance ticket sales start on the 4th, 10:00h JST. Ticket sales will again only be on the ticket ozumo site. Again no tamari seats, no special seats, no tickets for day and the other restrictions like last basho. VIP box seats on sale from the start for 2 persons per box. You can't chose your masu (nor box- ) seat location, only the group, but you can do so for the chair seats.  Limit to buy: 2 for masu and chair seats, 1 for the boxes. The new masu S seats (row 1-4) are not on sale this time. http://sumo.pia.jp/info/info-202009-tokubetsu.jsp ...

No yusho potrait for Tokushōryū and Hakuhō?

Those were to put in place at the canceled basho, unceremoniously

So I thought, but they don't do that: they had their 2 basho late ceremony this time

I'm certainly not a doctor, but it seems that skipping a basho to heal a month after surgery on both knees should be a given.

Ha, get a clue, newbie!  Healing and rehab after major surgery are for sissy footballers and baseball wimps.  Real tough-guy rikishi throw a little salt on the scars for good luck and then they get out there and gambarize!

Oh, wait a minute, you said Yokozuna Hakuho.  That's different; they're allowed the honor of treating double knee surgery like normal people would.

Ticket sales have started today, Shibatayama told that he got the information that pre-advance sales reservations were better than last basho http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202009040000476.html, but already plenty of tickets are in the resale (chairs, masu) - have to be from those reservations

No day is sold out yet, at least the masu seats for days 1 and 15 are sold out. http://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va09.jsp

One rikishi in the lower levels has tested positive for Covid-19 and is now hospitalized. The NSK is working on tracking down who would have had contact with this individual. Shibatayama is quoted as not knowing all the details at present. One thing they do know is that the wrestler belongs to one of the bigger heya, so they'll have to see how everyone else is doing.

One week before the basho.

I sure hope it has not spread to others.  We need the basho to go on even if it gets delayed a few weeks.

All these "after x basho" statements are +1 too much. Did they count the cancelled basho as well?

No, he's suspended for three basho (read: three banzuke creations, not six months) starting from this one.

That's usually the way they do things. I think in Japanese the counting is different (maybe? I think I heard that once). So for Meisei it was 2 banzuke ago. The only equivalent thin in English I can think of is the phrase in Christianity `after three days he rose again', where the time frame is Friday through Sunday with Friday being Day 1, Saturday Day 2 and Sunday Day 3. Nowadays, we would say two days later, or after two days.

Yeah, that was clearly a Union thing.  As evidence, remember that other parable where the guys who showed up at 5 PM still wanted a whole day's pay.
