Are Abi's days numbered?

Gokushindo was actually the only rikishi who fit the "ex-sekitori, different heya, kyujo last basho, not Tomokaze" description that John Gunning gave earlier.

I'm a newbie, please forgive my ignorance! :)

I would guess that in his frustration he will commit another infraction withing the 8 months till he's allowed to compete again, and the NSK will promptly accept the intai papers he already handed in.

This two-strike punishment has a great edge: he really has to change if he wants back, and he needs to prove it for a year at least. In my opinion it was very well thought through, to allow a final, unbiased judgement. Not something like a season-long suspension in MLB, sitting on your couch, and then come back where you were, because you just happen to be a pretty rare talent.

I love Sumo :-)

On another note: if he does, do you think he will change his shikona upon his return ?

Well, considering the alternative was "Abiseeinya".

Hostess clubs aren't really that decadent, though. It's not like they're brothels. Someone sits next to you and pours you drinks and laughs at your stupid jokes. It's really not that uncommon for guys to go there with friends even if some of them have a wife or girlfriend. Obviously, I don't know his wife and, who knows, maybe she does want to divorce him over something like that, but it's not quite as big a taboo as it might seem.

This. Hostess clubs are the after-hours domain of Japanese business executives (and sekitori too apparently), and I doubt many Japanese wives would consider it a big deal that their husbands frequent them.

Similar here. There are afterhours clubs, opening around 2am and close at 1pm, and both women and men receive a kind of very attentive service. They don‘t have a shady or immoral reputation, and are known for being able to fulfill any (usually crazy) request, save prostitution and its likes. You just need to be prepared to pay about four to eight times the prices of a good restaurant.

Fuji TV's Viking today had a recap of events, mainly Abi and then also Tagonoura youtube_query=バイキング 2020年8月10日

11:57-12:30h JST. Abi apparently is allowed to see his newborn daughter from time to time. Closing yoke: when Abi reappears on the dohyo, the gyoji should shout "Nokotta, nokotta - (really) nokotta" - the gyoji mantra during the bout means "still in".

Abi and oyakata at the kokugikan

Oh, this punishment now becomes a very mean thing to do if he just had a baby. Unless he doesn't care much about the child...

That also means he was going out all these times with a heavy pregnant wife at home. That decreases even more my consideration for him.

Time to remember the fact that we don't really know what actually happened, least of all why he did what he supposedly did.

I hadn't noticed comments about the baby before, Hochi only mentioned that his daughter was born in the time until this month https://hochi.news/articles/20200806-OHT1T50354.html

Anyway, this looks like to become the reason for Abi's final downfall. First I thought, he surely will get caught when he tries to go home and get thrown out for that, but at Viking they said, he'd be allowed to see his daughter.

Thus, he will say he wants to go see his daughter - and is seen somewhere else

The way they constructed it, it is virtually impossible for someone like Abi not to violate the terms of his parole

That's the test isn't it? If he makes it past this really strict gauntlet, he redeems his name somewhat with the NSK, but if he doesn't, it's the final proof that he can't abide the strict discipline of the NSK.

My gut feel however is that he makes it past this period, gets back to makuuchi in 3-4 tournaments, and then commits another massive goof during the celebrations that will see his career finally end in ignominy.

Abi showed up for the first time in in public today after his sentencing - was at the KKan for the rikishi check-ups but did not answer the media's questions. "Are you reflecting upon your actions?" he was asked, among other things. He nodded in silence.

The Kyokai are saying his intai papers are "in custody",  meaning he better watch it and any small discretion will automatically result in retirement. He is to present a signed oath accepting this. They are demanding he goes back to living at the heya (I wonder how that will work out, since he's married..) and be under Shikoroyama's close scrutiny. He is also not to leave the heya premises unless it's an emergency.

Abi has returned home after the Haru basho, after almost two years. "It's great to be back home. I'll do my best to keep it that way" he said. He is in charge of bathing and helping  his little daughter to sleep, while his wife is in charge of changing the diapers, dispelling the "fat man in diapers" theory. I thought some of you would like to know this.
