Wow that is quite sudden and I was very surprised to see it, especially with the basho starting soon, but it's true that he's only been a shadow of himself lately and had troubles getting healthy. Congratulations to him for a great career and I wish him the best for his next career as Kiyomigata oyakata

Both him and rival Goeido seem like they'd be natural oyakata. I'm sure he'll be a great one.

To be honest it doesn't come that much as a surprise, since former Bushuyama switched from Kiyomigata to Kasugayama last May.  Possibly Tochiozan already took the decision after his terrible Haru but enjoyed some extra rikishi salary in the meantime.

Wish him a successful oyakata career!

What a shame, I always liked his bouts even though he had clearly been on the tail end of his career for some time.

I'm gonna miss the way he slowly inches forward using only his feet just before the tachiai:

edit: btw Otokonoyama, you typoed his name in OP, "Tochiochan" makes him sound considerably more cute than he is

I loved this guy: cool demeanor but vicious energy, resourceful defense.  Now searching for the new top rikishi Elvis impersonator.

I'd say Chiyotairyu is a lock for that title, no?

I've always associated Chiyotairyu with Elvis too, and Tsurugisho to a smaller degree.

All the best to Kiyomigata in his future career.

The only surprising thing about this news is the timing. Seems very odd coming just before a basho.

That shuffle of his... I always felt he was overstepping the bounds of propriety just a tad with that (i.e. it feels to me like it should be the exclusive province of the yokozuna). Was that why Hakuho gave him such a hard time? I wonder.

Yeah, I guess by default.  Sadly, Tochiozan was young, thin Elvis while Chiyotairu loks like old, fat Elvis (all due respect!)

I started watching sumo too late to see him at his best, so I'll have to go back and watch some old basho. A Jun-Yusho in a playoff, 6 kinboshi and 6 sansho is a pretty good haul!

He had a solid stretch as a sanyaku mainstay, though I never had a sense he would ever make it to Ozeki.

Still, otsukaresama on a solid career and wish him the best as an oyakata.

I saw Tochiozan in his Makuuchi debut (which was also my sumo debut) all the way back in March 2007. It was a storming basho for him: 11-4, kanto-sho and scalps against some of the big and popular names of the time like Wakanosato, Homasho, Takamisakari and Aminishiki. He even beat a young Kakuryu.

Sad to see him go but he’s had a solid career with plenty of stories, least of all that all-hiramaku yusho playoff with Kyokutenho that ensures his name goes in the history books.

Who would have thunk Toyohibiki will be the last man standing of the three youngsters featured in that famous documentary I can't find a link to right now?

And Toyohibiki and Kotoshogiku are all that's left of the "Seven Samurai" that Mainoumi used to go on about.

Tochiozan as the torikumi that left the biggest impression, named the win from Hatsu last year against Kisenosato, who retired after that loss. He had 3 kinboshi from Kise, one each from the 3 recent Mongolian yokozuna.

Such a warrior deserves an affectionate name to honour his service. Thanks for the hat tip.
