Konfusius says: To beat a Yokozuna, a Yokozuna has to show up.

(Laughing...) (ran out of reacts; I offer this emoji in apology)

In all seriousness though, that goes both ways right? If yokozuna show up and you lose to both in close-run fights, you might have an argument, but if both yokozuna and the other ozeki don't show up and you fail to win the yusho or force it to a playoff, it could also be argued that you're not putting in yokozuna-worthy numbers.

In any case, Asanoyama has time both to grow and get promoted. Not being on a tsuna-run this basho is no shame, I think; no yokozuna has ever been promoted with only 2 basho as ozeki, so it's not reasonable to expect Asanoyama to break that record.

Not for me. It wasn’t a yusho equivalent, he lost to the yusho winner in their regulation bout and 12-3 really isn’t enough of a score to force the issue (as good a record as it is in more general terms).

I he wins next basho, the YDC has to decide on the promotion, because he will have fulfilled the requirements of 2 yusho or next best result. They would surely decide against it, because it is not a really strong runner up performance and he was just promoted ozeki. Only 2 yusho will force the promotion.

But what if he zenshos next basho, beating both Yokozuna and all other sanyaku and joi, including Terunofuji? Promotion and double-intai?

That would be a parallel to Musashimaru in 1994. They didn't promote him.

NHK is broadcasting the yusho ceremony, cup and interview.

No NHK cup - it was reported that also the usual yusho interview at the dohyo is canceled. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20200801/sum20080118460011-n1.html

I would have expected that the externals have to wear a mask at the awards

That was in the era of the prior 2 promotions being by-the-book back-to-back yushos, however, after the disaster that was Kitao/Futahaguro. Considering the last two yokozuna promotions have been strong J/D followed by Y, Asanoyama may have a squeak of a chance, but if I were to bet I'd say this tournament would not count.

Wow how did they get the picture out so fast? Have they stopped getting the pictures painted over, and just inserted a photo in? Or do they present the picture, get it painted over, then mounted?

That is just a default pic, the yusho photo will be taken later

Terunofuji got his hands disinfected after an award handed over. Other awards - petrol etc. and also the NHK cup only have no ceremony, but they are awarded.

The woman that did the painting of the pic retired. No apprentice so now it is a Yusho Photo.

Congratz to Terunofuji! (despite whooping my fav Mita...)

Other ex-Ozekis doing fine today, too; Tochinochin and Takayasu at 10-5. Hopefully they are able to raise in ranks again. (Heart...)

Also, pretty impressed by Kotoeko. Doing well again after his Juryo visit. :-)

It is a good thing! Someone needs to set the record straight about these things. :-)

As you no doubt noticed, the Prime Minister's Cup was not presented by "external" Abe or one of his "external" government representatives.  Hakkaku did the honours!

I suspect if Abe had decided to present, he definitely would have been wearing a mask.  It's sort of his thing.

Wow. What a fantastic story. I feel for Asa, but he had his chance, and he'll get another I'm sure.

Many, many sumo fans are sad for Asanoyama.  But the consolation prize, in his case, is that he did end up with the junyusho runner up position, since both Shodai and Mitakeumi were knocked out of that race.  That is a pseudo yusho equivalent and will count going forward.

And don't forget, he bagged 30 kensho envelopes (as opposed to the 14 Terunofuji bagged) today.

大変でした to my friends in Toyama City.

That was the same last basho - I was talking about the external representatives for the Aichi and other awards - most were from their respective Tokyo offices

I suspected that is what you meant.  I was simply focusing on the PM Cup.  While it is not unusual for Abe not to be around for the March, July, and November Tournaments, when the tournament is in Tokyo, one has a chance of seeing Abe.

Can someone list the the amount of money Terunofuji will receive as a result of winning the Yusho?  Wikipedia said the Yusho itself is worth 10 million yen and each special prize is worth 2 million yen.  Terunofuji received the Shukun-sho and the Gino-sho.  (Amamaniac said he received 14 Kensho today).  What other bonuses and money will he receive?  Also, is there a list of gifts and trophies that he will receive?  As I recall, he receives a year's worth of Corona beer from Mexico and obviously some macaroons.  Will he still receive the petrol & is that a year's worth?  As I understand it, no mushrooms this time around.

What will Isegahama Beya receive?
