lackmaker 380 Posted August 1, 2020 Well kakuryu is an ex ozeki and he didn't make it.

I loved Tobizarus's win today against better-than-his-look-Akiseyama. The win gave him the KK. We will see him in the top division in the next basho.

Some songs came into my mind that matched with each situation, so – what about a Song Contest? Here’s the list: 1.) Terunofuji: „Don’t stop me now (I’m having such a good time…)” 2.) Teru & Asa: “Reach out for the medal yusho” 3.) The Next Generation Rikishi: “Hakkiyoi…Ozumo Hakuho, Hakuho, no-more zen-sho-ho. Hai!” 4.) Daieisho & Mita vs. Hak: “Oops! I did it again” 5.) The Kachikoshi Band: “Oh happy day” 6.) Daieisho & Takakeisho: “One for me, one for you” 7.) Abi: “Ha! Ha! Said the Clown” (Manfred Mann) 8.) Takakeisho vs. Enho & Mita: “All dead, all dead” (Queen) 9.) …? 10.) …any suggestions? Let’s see who will sing: “The winner takes it all”? Eikokurai 3,287 Posted August 1, 2020 Well, Ikioi just ruined the basho. 1

He'll fight Ikioi (2-11) in the second half of the Top Division bouts today. The watch is on. Onosho finally "showed up"! Thanks, in part, to at least two fans with support towels. The bleeding has finally stopped.
Benihana 1,673 Posted August 1, 2020 (edited) I see, Terunofuji's tsukebito is one of these guys Spoiler "one possible explanation why idiots reproduce so much" Edited August 1, 2020 by Benihana 3

Ikioi, on the other hand, is stuck up a creek without a paddle. In the modern era, only Kakizoe survived at M9 with a 3-12 record, and no one has survived at M9 with a 4-11. He'll need to win tomorrrow and pray really hard, but with the number of promotable records in juryo and the good performances of the ex-ozeki squad, he's likely dropping. Seiyashi 2,744 Posted August 1, 2020 And Enho's attempts at a straight-on tachiai this basho seem to be backfiring. He just gets outmuscled and outshoved, especially against oshi specialists like Daieisho and Takakeisho.
Kashunowaka 228 Posted August 1, 2020 Endo could actually get stuck at M1e with 8-7. If Daieisho doesn't win his final bout there will not be an open komusubi slot. And Endo might not even be first in line, if Takanosho wins his last bout.

Precedent suggests no, and it is possible that the shimpan committee will put him at M2 like Tokushoryu, Takanosho at M1w, and leave Endo at M1e if Daieisho gets stuck. But given that the shimpan seems to treat Terunofuji with a lot more respect (and he's defeated harder opponents vs Tokushoryu), M2e may be an underpromotion, and we may see a 4K banzuke again. I don't think it's super likely, but it's not as out of left field as last year's 4K banzuke was. M2 for Terunofuji it is. Eikokurai 3,287 Posted August 1, 2020 (edited) Shodai! That was commanding. Terunofuji seemed a little shocked by the quality of Shodai’s sumo there I think. Now watch Asanoyama blow it anyway ... Edited August 1, 2020 by Eikokurai
Kaninoyama 1,127 Posted August 1, 2020 Future Ozeki Shodai defeats former Ozeki Terunofuji. This basho just gets more and more interesting.
Akinomaki 32,226 Posted August 1, 2020 It had to be - Waka earlier had said that it would be problematic for Shodai if he had a day off. The rule is confirmed, Waka is always wrong.
Karasukurai 147 Posted August 1, 2020 Wow, this basho is full of surprises. Going to the wire.
Eikokurai 3,287 Posted August 1, 2020 Shodai officially begins his Ozeki run with 11 wins guaranteed. Repeat this two more times and it’s his. Quite doable.
Seiyashi 2,744 Posted August 1, 2020 Yeah the drama is back on. If Terutsuyoshi doesn't win today, things can get really messy tomorrow if both sekiwake win - and they're both in form this tournament, so I wouldn't put it past them to win.
Kashunowaka 228 Posted August 1, 2020 Shodai could actually be two bouts from ozeki-hood...

His 13-2 JY was only from M4 and he lost out on the yusho to an M17. Not as impressive as it needs to be. Plus the middle basho was a bare minimum 8-7. Karasukurai 147 Posted August 1, 2020 I've given up trying to work out what the hell is going on. Nice win by Mita btw, Koto has been on good form this basho.

Seiyashi 2,744 Posted August 1, 2020 1 minute ago, Kashunowaka said: Shodai could actually be two bouts from ozeki-hood... Highly doubt it, with that stinker of an 8-7 prior to this basho. The last ozeki with a 8-7 as his second run was Goeido, and before that Akebono. Both of them otherwise had junyusho in his first and third basho, and both of them started their run from komusubi. No one has been promoted to ozeki starting from maegashira with an 8-7 intervening sekiwake tournament.
