Chanko Thief 67 Posted July 8, 2020 Unlike many other sports, I don’t recall ever seeing the wives/families of rikishi shown in attendance at a basho. Is it not customary for their families to go to the basho and watch, or is it just not shown in the broadcast? Also, if wives and kids do usually attend, do they get comped tickets? sumojoann 1,254 Posted July 8, 2020 Takayasu's mother, who has always been an enthusiastic supporter of her son, has attended more than one basho. I can still remember her jumping up and down in the audience. Kisenosato's parents were in attendance on senshuraku during a basho when he won the yusho. In a very old video, I recall seeing Hakuho's wife and child or children in the audience. Often the yusho winner's wife or wife & children are in the backstage area. I recall seeing Hakuho's wife and 4 children and Kakuryu's wife and 2 children on occasion.
sumojoann 1,254 Posted July 8, 2020 (edited) Here's a video showing Takayasu's mother and father in the audience (at the beginning of the video). At 6:30 after Takayasu has defeated Harumafuji, and Takayasu's promotion to Ozeki is assured, you can see his mother's tears of joy. Regarding "comped" tickets, all I know for sure is that Hakuho is given a lot of free tickets that he hands out to family and friends. I have a mutual friend who got a ticket from one of Hakuho's sisters. Edited July 8, 2020 by sumojoann
sumojoann 1,254 Posted July 8, 2020 This video shows Kisenosato's parents in the audience on senshuraku at the Hatsu Basho in 2017. See them at 2:00, 6:43 and 7:24. Kisenosato defeated Hakuho and was promoted to Yokozuna.

Its quite common for the famillies of the rikishi to be in the audience on Day 15 when he has won the yusho or is still in the race. Also when going for a promotion as Joann mentioned above. During the TV broadcast they are shown on the build up for the fight and on replay.
sumojoann 1,254 Posted July 8, 2020 In this video, Kakuryu's wife and 2 children are shown in the backstage area during his Yusho interview (2018 Haru Basho). See 21:15.
Yamanashi 3,689 Posted July 8, 2020 Doesn't Mitakeumi's Mom have a claque of supporters up in the stands most basho? I'm pretty sure I've seen them on NHK broadcasts.

Yes, there's always a big (and loud!) group of supporters for Mitakeumi at every basho. I don't know if they are all connected to his mother. Here's a video of his very enthusiastic mother at the Sept 2019 basho when Mitakeumi won the Yusho. See 4:35 and 8:20.
Katooshu 3,087 Posted July 8, 2020 (edited) Mitakeumi's mom has been a great supporter, even as an amateur she was there with large groups screaming for him (in orange). Vs some random doofus in 2012 Speaking of family in attendance, this video and hundreds of others were filmed by Shiraishi's father, who filmed dozens of his son's amateur competitions is one of the best sources of amasumo video (though his son turning pro seems to have led to a hiatus or retirement from that). Watch this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJFKLWp5xCU I just noticed Mitakeumi's mother (in YOUR video --- wearing the orange blouse) going crazy when he won (see 12:17). Churaumi 725 Posted July 8, 2020 I was there last May and Takayasu lost that day. His mom got up and stormed out. It was cute.
Jemuzu 34 Posted July 8, 2020 A friend of mine went to one of the Tokyo basho last year and was sat next to Enho’s mum. And he was in the cheap seats at the top!
Chanko Thief 67 Posted July 9, 2020 Wow, I have no idea how I missed all of these examples over the years, I guess I must have blinked haha. Thank you all very much, good stuff.
Churaumi 725 Posted July 9, 2020 (edited) Except for the occasional mention on NHK, it doesn't seem like the sumo world makes much of a deal of it unless someone is going for an emotionally important yusho. I think every time I've seen family shown on TV they've always been fairly high up in the upper seats of the Kokugikan. That day I saw Takayasu's mom run out she was only maybe five rows below the general admission ring, and toward the corner of the arena on a diagonal from the angle the usual camera at tachi-ai. Hardly a great seat. Edited July 9, 2020 by Churaumi But I'd rather sit there than on my couch.
