Kaminariyuki 497 Posted June 22, 2020 Not sure whether to call this Natsu or Nagoya, which would seem odd since it's going to be in the Kokugikan. So, I've seen the schedule wit a July 19 start and no audience. Is this definitely on, or do we have a date when the NSK will make an official decision as to whether the basho will be a go? Thanks in advance for any info. We want the guys to be safe, of course, but I'm ready to watch some sumo! I haven't put a bottle of imo shochu in the fridge yet, though.... Akinomaki 39,803 Posted June 22, 2020 (edited) On 15/06/2020 at 20:55, Akinomaki said: The next rijikai will decide on holding the basho The schedule for dohyo matsuri, (yusho portrait) unveiling ceremony, YDC etc. is being adjusted now: "In the project team for holding the no-audience event we will think about what is to do." 9 hours ago, Akinomaki said: The ban on degeiko is expected to be lifted 2 weeks before the basho, if the (medical) experts allow it - but they also might advise to cancel the basho. Oguruma today confirmed that the rijikai will decide the guidelines for holding the basho, when the results of the antibody tests have been published later this month. "The rikishi think there will be a July basho." "To put it extreme, if like for Osaka we say 3 days before we can do it, I think we can do it." https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2020/06/22/0013445532.shtml Edited June 22, 2020 by Akinomaki
sekitori 492 Posted June 22, 2020 The Australian Football League has once again started its schedule of games with no audience in attendance. The NHK may want to emulate the way it's being broadcast. Appropriate crowd background noise is heard and when a goal is scored, the volume of that noise increases and then recedes as play continues. Only when you see a totally empty stadium do you realize that the sound was artificial. If the Aussies can make non-attendance seem like a large crowd, I'm sure the people at NHK can do something similar with sumo--if they care to. On the other hand, the virtually silent sumo broadcasts in Osaka were kind of fascinating. It could be that they may decide to continue broadcasting without any imitation crowd noise at all.

RabidJohn 1,665 Posted June 24, 2020 I hope they don't add fake cheers to images of an empty Kokugikan. If they're gonna go down that route, they may as well greenscreen in a fake audience - or one of the fake backgrounds suggested on this forum some time ago. Someone send them a link! Sue 483 Posted June 25, 2020 I actually rather enjoyed the quiet in Osaka. It gave the proceedings a solemn feeling, appropriate to a religious ceremony. It wouldn't work for other sports, but it was just fine for Sumo. 5

It seemed very odd for a couple of days, but then it grew on me. Reminded me of watching asageiko in person. Churaumi 728 Posted June 25, 2020 I'm down. Tickets are hard enough to come by as it was, competition will be fierce if they have limited seating.

Kaminariyuki 497 Posted June 25, 2020 The lower level box seats are really about the size to hold one gaijin anyway, and the extra zabutans would be nice to curl up on after a little imo shochu. If I fall asleep, somebody wake me up for makushita. I need to see Ura on the way to his third straight yusho!
Old Shatterhand is dead 29 Posted June 29, 2020 Isn’t there any news from the Sumo world? It seems the cancellation of the May basho also cancelled news about sumo. Theoretically it is only 3 weeks to the next basho and yet there is no any comments, interview, news, gossips, literally nothing about sumo... weird.
Sue 483 Posted June 29, 2020 The banzuke was published back in May, and there won't be a new one. Degeiko isn't happening, and the sumo world is mostly sequestered. There just isn't all that much to talk about yet.

ryafuji 807 Posted July 6, 2020 The names of the tournaments are unofficial, right? So the Kyokai doesn't have to come out and say, "this is officially Natsu and not Nagoya." Personally I think it would make sense to call it the Natsu basho as it's using the Natsu banzuke and it's in Tokyo, but ultimately it doesn't really matter. Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted July 7, 2020 Japan to ease coronavirus rules and allow events up to 5,000 people Quote Coronavirus-induced rules on holding big events will be relaxed from Friday as planned, boosting the maximum number of people allowed at an indoor venue to 5,000. The decision was made at a meeting of a revamped government expert panel Monday, on the premise that preventive measures against the virus will be taken. Starting Friday, the number of people allowed to gather at indoor venues for sporting events or music concerts will increase to a maximum 5,000 at a time from the current 1,000. The venues should be at 50 percent capacity... https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/07/07/national/coronavirus-events-crowds/ 4

This then not only gives the green light to a basho but one with a crowd in attendance. Now one has to think how the kyokai might implement that. I don’t think a free-for-all sale of tickets is the way to go. Perhaps some sort of lottery from a list of approved names who can show their health and travel history? That would ensure bums on seats but prevents all and sundry going along.
