We will soon know if Japanese people are willing to brave the virus and buy up the tickets.

I'm tempted, but I've avoided making any trips into Tokyo since February and I'm not about to start now.

The detailed measures by the NSK cover 33 pages.

The spectators at the ticket booth take the torikumi sheets for the day themselves - usually they get handed over by the oyakata who takes the ticket.

- for the rikishi there is also

masks in the shitaku-beya, also during warming-up

acrylic plates to separate all sekitori

the sumo training institute is used as shitaku-beya for juryo

to have the time in the shitaku-beya as short as possible, the mage making hairdo should be done in the heya

when the rikishi leave the shitaku-beya for the torikumi, they put away the mask, when they come back, they take a new one

to keep distance, stickers are on the floor to mark foot positions in the hanamichi - for the spectators these are in place at toilets and shops

http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202007130000760.html

What about NHK’s rikishi’s interview after match? Are they interviews as usual or by video link?

Someone somewhere here said the plan was to have a Skype-type interview rather than yelling across an abyss like last time. Don't know if that got the final approval, but it makes all the sense in the world.

So the NSK probably won't do it.

The gomen fuda was put in place this morning. It has more of its original meaning again, to show that the basho is allowed - by the authorities.

Sales tomorrow on the net start with the pre-advance sales lottery applications from 11h on, till 11h on the 16th. Those who won the chance to buy a ticket get a mail at 18h on the 16th. Advance sales of the remaining tickets start on the 17th at 10h. Sales only take place at the ticket ozumo site.

You can give 1st till 8th choice for a ticket (day or seat type) per lottery application, prices are the same as for a usual basho http://sumo.pia.jp/ticket07.jsp

How they will handle same day tickets only by sales on the net remains to be seen - if tickets are left, they are on sale till 17h that day - till the 2nd half of makuuchi. No mention if the chaya have some ticket contingent for their regular customers or if really all tickets are on sale on Ticket Ozumo.

Degeiko is still not allowed.

Shibatayama confirmed that this time, unlike Haru, the basho won't be canceled if one person gets infected: "If by any chance an infection happens, we have made guidelines for that" - the heya would be sealed etc. o

There will be no yusho parade. o

You know, one of the positives with scientists is that they'll usually give you the straight scoop even if it doesn't jive with what you or they expect to hear. The only way forward is by examining the facts and acting accordingly. Or, I suppose, one can go with the White House plan, the power of wishful thinking.

A silent public is even eerier than no public. Bring your noisemakers along, I'd say.

Time for a gadget that can reproduce cheers prepared at home!

They have the possibility of cheers from home - but it isn't mentioned any more for the basho

The detailed measures by the NSK cover 33 pages.

The NSK published the guidelines on the net - the pdf document has 36 pages, but I'd say the actual guidelines are just 20 pages. Most is for the NSK members and a lot is general stuff.

A few details:

People from overseas have to stay away from the basho withing the first 14 days after arriving in Japan (I think there is still 14 days of quarantine anyway).

People with severe coughing or sneezing are asked to stay away from the basho, as are people with ailments of heart or lungs or diabetes - there are announcements about that.

Sitting in other seats than your own is forbidden. Refrain from talking on the phone. Talking anywhere in the hall only at a minimum.

Eating and drinking in the hall is allowed, but masks are obligatory, so this is no fun. On sale are only soft drinks and yakitori.

Only a reduced number of shops operate, the shop that sells books and the banzuke is not among them. To reduce crowds,  reservation in advance of pamphlets, yakitori etc. is recommended. Don't touch the merchandise, the staff hands it over.

All extra service corners don't operate - esp. photo frame service - also the sumo museum is closed. The chaya also don't operate.

- will they sell all the 2500 tickets each day?

Interviews with the rikishi are not in the usual press club, but an extra room - separated at least 2m and by a transparent sheet etc.

One section is about traveling to the basho etc. - the use of public transport is not prohibited for rikishi. Masks all the time, in the car with window open, talking at a minimum.

The rikishi don't like the masks during warming up for the bout: Takarafuji thinks to run out of breath when one is not used to them o. Most rikishi apparently never use a mask during keiko, Hakuho said he'll try that in advance to get used to it o , Asanoyama similar. o

Good link, thanks.

It adds to my theory that the NSK leaders are not the smartest lot.  I hope people use their common sense and watch the basho from home.

The JSA decision was accompanied by an announcement that the November tournament will also take place in Tokyo. Although a wise decision, it appears to have come as a shock to the Japan Sumo Federation — the governing body for amateur sumo in the country. With the All-Japan University Championships due to take place in the Kokugikan on Nov. 7 and 8, moving the Kyushu Basho to the capital would require a change of date for one of collegiate sumo’s biggest events. According to reports in the Japanese sporting press, the JSF revealed that the JSA didn’t contact them until July 14th — the day after the decision was made public.

C'mon now NSK, why'd you have to be such assholes?

John's right. It's too soon and this decision smacks of wishful thinking.

This kind of reminds me of how nearly every country in the world initiated quarantine too late, after first dragging their feet with half-measures, despite overwhelming evidence of its necessity, and then ending it too soon. Everybody just wants to go back to normal. I wouldn't be surprised if the NSK leaders believe that if this basho goes well, that means next time they can have 5000 spectators, as if this pandemic just going to vanish.

Yes, isn't it amazing how different governments make the same mistake again and again, and again?   As for Japan,  unless the economy is about to collapse, I don't get their Go To campaign, opening up events up to 5000 people, etc. when it is abundantly clear that their COVID 19 situation has turned for the worse.   Most Japanese does not agree with the government's policy based on what I can gather from the media.  I wish the best for Japanese people.  But, heck, they voted for their politicians as the US elected you know who as the president.

(Hot off the press - Tokyo to report more than 280 new infections for today, shattering their previous daily infection record.  Things are not getting better.)

Can we please keep these threads on topic? A general corona banter thread was created awhile back yet certain posters keep insisting on using sumo threads for that purpose anyway. It's really getting tiresome.

I've seen tv shows that touted the Kokugikan's yakitori, but I was not impressed I'd have to be really hungry and a little drunk to try it again.

Might as well since the Shinto boys won't let her in the dohyo anyway. Or has that changed?

Sales have started hours ago, but even day 15 is far away from being sold out yet. The Japanese pages have changed for the worse - you could see for all days, which type of either masu or chair seats were available for all 15 days - now you have to check each day separately, more like the English pages - and those don't work at all this basho. The complete overview of vacant seats is usually about half a day late and not useful to check what is available now.

Chief shimpan Isegahama was interviewed on the phone. The shimpan like for Haru won't wear masks, they sit a bit more separated from the dohyo than usual - no tamari-seki, so there is plenty of space available. And during mono-ii, the chief wants them to keep more social distance, talk from farther away. (louder - so the outside microphones may catch them and we may hear them - dohyo microphones are switched off, else we could hear them every time) https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2020/07/17/0013518442.shtml
