July basho?

Interesting. This then not only gives the green light to a basho but one with a crowd in attendance. Now one has to think how the kyokai might implement that. I don’t think a free-for-all sale of tickets is the way to go. Perhaps some sort of lottery from a list of approved names who can show their health and travel history? That would ensure bums on seats but prevents all and sundry going along.

Starting with July 10th, events with up to 5000 spectators are allowed again, but Shibatayama repeated that the NSK first of all aims to have a basho in an empty hall.

No. 2 Oguruma confirmed that today, but also told that the NSK will watch the situation in pro-baseball for reference: they already started and from the 10th on plan to have spectators. Several days then till the basho starts on the 19th, so maybe "1 person in a masu box and then 3 empty till the next one or the like. Such things are not yet understood."

Rumor are about having the maintaining members, also from other locations, especially from robbed Nagoya, spread about the hall.

ijiin (maintaining members): those who donate at least 3.9 million (Tokyo)/ 1.3 million yen (other basho) every 6 years (once or yearly installments) to the kyokai

and get e. g. a special front seat (300 tamari seki are for that purpose)

Japan to ease coronavirus rules and allow events up to 5,000 people

That is shocking given the recent surge in Coronavirus infections in Japan.   (Shakinghead...)

Another record high today--upwards of 250 infections.

I'm not implying a suggestion of action here, but the surge to 250 is interesting in the context of the US right now. I live in one of the less affected states, but Utah hit a high of over 700 cases yesterday. From NHK News, the number of reported cases in Tokyo actually went down yesterday, but apparently there is reemergence of the disease in other areas of Japan, even Okinawa. This isn't completely going away unless there's an effective vaccine or 80%, or so, of the global population gets it (and the antibodies are effective against mutations of the variant that's rampaging around the world now).

I have the picture of a homeless gaijjin in my mind.  :-D

Not so far from the truth... Particularly in appearance, since I haven't had a haircut in four months.

The berd is trimmed, but weird, so that it will fit under a mask.

Is July basho in trouble?  Tokyo topped its all-time high number again with a daily report of 243 today. At this trajectory,  I think it is a matter of time before someone in the basho will test positive.  Then what?

That pushed it up to about 7300 cumulative cases ( about 600 currently contagious)  among 9.3 million people.  I kinda like those odds.

No doubt it will happen.  But will it finish without an incident (someone tested positive)?   I say that's a 50 - 50.

I'd say its probable if the gyoji, yobidashi, and some others who interact with rikishi are being allowed to take public transit during the basho as I read in a post here.

Only now I’m giving myself the chance to get excited for more sumo. I couldn’t handle getting excited for it then being canceled again.

is it officially going forward then?

The question for the riji-kai on the 13th now only seems to be: will there be spectators in the hall or not. Up to 2500 are considered.

I don't believe that keeping the audience down to 2500, or even less, is a good idea. The NSK proved in March that a basho could be successful with no audience in attendance. I think it will be much safer to hold it once again behind closed doors.

Agreed.   The current form of COVID 19 is supposedly many times more infectious than one that originated from Wuhan.  Holding the basho with an audience when Tokyo is on a record-breaking pace for new infections is stupid, to be blunt.

If only they could do the whole thing outside, instead of cramming 5000 people in one building. So far the evidence suggests that's one of the biggest dangers: being indoors, especially in places where there's no good air circulation and viral particles can't disperse as easily. For example, the recent protests in the US have had very little effect on infection rates, although this is partly because people not taking part in protests became more socially distant. But even protesters themselves did not get infected at significant rates.

Not that the outdoors is completely safe, of course, but it probably makes it slightly safer. The absolute last thing the NSK wants is to be responsible for a superspreader event.

1 Person per masu box it is, at the 2nd floor seats, 3 empty in the row till the next one and alternating with the adjacent rows, to have the hall filled up to 25%, 2500 spectators as the limit. No ringside seats (tamari-seki), no fan service by the rikishi. http://hochi.news/articles/20200713-OHT1T50240.html

Tickets will be on sale on the net starting tomorrow. Acrylic plates will be installed in the shitaku-beya, to have less contact among the rikishi. In the bath the use of the bathtub is forbidden.

For the spectators, masks are obligatory, as is hand disinfection on entry, to each one a mini antiseptic solution is distributed. Who is measured with body temperature of 37.5 °C or more at the entrance, is not allowed in.

No contact with the rikishi, waiting at the entrance to meet them when they enter or leave is forbidden.

Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, food sales only at a minimum: no chanko at the lower floor, the food corners don't open. The official NSK goods booth is closed as well.

Loud cheering should be self restricted, applause is encouraged.

The detailed measures by the NSK cover 33 pages.

The spectators at the ticket booth take the torikumi sheets for the day themselves - usually they get handed over by the oyakata who takes the ticket.

- for the rikishi there is also

masks in the shitaku-beya, also during warming-up

acrylic plates to separate all sekitori

the sumo training institute is used as shitaku-beya for juryo

to have the time in the shitaku-beya as short as possible, the mage making hairdo should be done in the heya

when the rikishi leave the shitaku-beya for the torikumi, they put away the mask, when they come back, they take a new one

to keep distance, stickers are on the floor to mark foot positions in the hanamichi - for the spectators these are in place at toilets and shops

The dohyo matsuri on the 18th will take place without the sanyaku rikishi attending, only with the NSK executives and the shimpan department members http://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2020071301027&g=spo

The NSK aims for up to 5000 spectators per day at the Aki basho - for this the July basho measures have to be a success http://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2020071301022&g=spo

Greed triumphs!  No skin off my nose but it is unsettling to see these turn of events (Go To Campaign, Rapid increase in infection rate, Allowing up to 5000 spectators in most events, ...).   Didn't Tokyo just report a cluster infection from an event with 1000 in the audience?

We will soon know if Japanese people are willing to brave the virus and buy up the tickets.

They should hold a peaceful protest in the Kokugikan, which according to scientists will bring down the numbers
