Haven’t seen a thread for this anywhere else, but I just saw this tweet from Sumo Kyokai:

That didn't come unexpected. I wish him well for what is coming now.

Ugh autocorrect how do I fix his name in the title x_X

Edit the first post of the thread, there you have access to the title.

Toyonoshima is now Izutsu-oyakata, the rijikai has acknowledged both intai and acquiring the name https://www.sankei.com/sports/news/200417/spo2004170020-n1.html

@mt fuji It's not obvious, but you click and hold the title when editing the 1st post.

I wish the new Izutsu-oyakata the best in his new career.

About time.   Let's see how much weight he shed in his retirement.

I will miss seeing the smiling family man mount the dohyo. He’s long been a fixture in the sumo world and I am a fan. best of luck to the new oyakata.

Yet another talented veteran retiring after a very good career. Toyonoshima also seems like a very good husband and father, I am sure he'll be a good oyakata next, best of luck for the future and thank you for the memories !

With Toyonoshima and Sokokurai retirement (also both are oyakata now) will makushita division ranking will end at makushita 59 or what?

I'm guessing they are both on the banzuke.

What a guy! Always loved his matches. Wishing him the best in the future. My favorite Toyonoshima match: His victory against Terunofuji after being in a disadvantageous position a couple of times during the bout.

His pirouettes on the edge of the ring were always a thing of beauty.

When i first started watching Sumo and i didn't know any wrestlers, (A situation i'm back at again from long absence, but that's by-the-by), i was instantly intrigued by Toyonoshima's Kesho-Mawashi, with the whale design, and then later i came to really enjoy his style and skill.  I wish the best of luck to him.

Funny, just today I thought I saw a mini-Toyonoshima lying in my living room, but then it turned out to be just one of my children's balls.

Mrs. T is taller than him?

I think it might just be her hair, but Toyonoshima is/was shorter than most rikishi. He's the same height as Enho (maybe shorter, depending where you look) and an inch or so shorter than Ura...
