Akinomaki 40,231 Posted July 13, 2020 Today at the toshiyori general meeting, Toyonoshima had his first day of work as Izutsu-oyakata, first time with the new suit, from Osaka: "The feeling of wearing it is ... not really good." "Yeah, good is a kimono." http://hochi.news/articles/20200713-OHT1T50331.html On the 11th he was on TBS Birth-Day http://www.tbs.co.jp/birth-day/onair/20200711.html o 6
Yamanashi 3,795 Posted July 13, 2020 I hadn't really thought about it, but these guys enter the heya at fifteen and wear a yukata out in the world and old baggy shorts 'n' shirts in the heya. Then they have to wear a western suit when they're ~33; what a culture shock.
Churaumi 738 Posted July 14, 2020 I know right? When it came out Goeidou had to be taught how to tie a tie by his oyakata I caught some feels.
ryafuji 811 Posted July 14, 2020 (edited) I know a few adults who don't know how to tie a tie. Not just an ex-rikishi problem! Edited July 14, 2020 by ryafuji
RabidJohn 1,738 Posted July 15, 2020 Are ties not part of school uniform for boys? I have that Gogo Yubari mental image of plaid skirt, dark blazer, white blouse and tie for girls, but nothing for boys...

Yubinhaad 11,614 Posted November 26, 2020 Izutsu-oyakata announced that May 28th 2022 is the date for his intaizumo at the Kokugikan. Quite poignantly, he noted that his last basho as an active rikishi was a lonely experience with no audience at all, and hopes that in a year and a half his many fans will be able to attend and see the last oichomage of Toyonoshima. 2

Akinomaki 40,231 Posted January 4, 2023 Toyonoshima announced today his switch to talento/entertainer"Toyonoshima" - as mentioned in the kabu thread, leaving the NSK - opening "Office Toyonoshima" next o o o o o After the danpatsushiki he had announced he wants to raise rikishi who go above Toyonoshima (sekiwake), but talento and charity activities are his specialty all along - for quite a while, articles emerge about his fight vs. epilepsy while in sumo, at present a series in yomiuri http://yomidr.yomiuri.co.jp/article/20221219-OYTET50017/ he's active in many ways

I know I'm several years late to this, but on the occasions that I have to wear a tie (very rare) I wear one of two that were tied over 20 years ago by my father. I did try a few times on a new tie and could never get it to come out right, and since I can take off the ones I have knotted without unknotting them, why would I? Knots are a very interesting physical way to store information. 3

Knots are a very interesting physical way to store information. I can relate to that, I also used to wear already tied ties, until at some point I had to learn how to tie them myself. So that I'm not entirely off topic, I'm disappointed that someone like Toyonoshima was not able to acquire a kabu, but as long as he's happy with his future career I'm happy for him too. serge_gva 52 Posted February 7, 2023 (edited) I had missed this info, it saddens me to see him out of the sumo world. Apart from Harumafuji for the reasons we know, in the last 10 years, he is the most "high profile" to have left the NSK, right? The difficulty he had in buying a kabu could retroactively explain why, after his ruptured achilles heel in the summer of 2016 at the age of 33, he tried to come back for almost 4 years doing the lift between Makushita and Juryo... 13 basho as sekitori + 5 Jun-Yusho for a rikishi under 170cm is very impressive! I don't think Enho will make it. For Midorifuji, it remains to be seen, but I doubt it. Do we find better or even comparable results in the history of Sumo for a wrestler under 1m70? The closest one is of course Takakeisho, but he is a good bit taller. Edited February 7, 2023 by serge_gva
