Talk sumo - social discourse for the locked down

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Ok, mods, please bear with me. This may at first appear to be something for the off-topic section, but I don't believe it is.

We are living in extraordinary times, with many of us confined to our homes due to COVID19 lockdowns. But we are social creatures: we aren't meant to live like this.

Last night I was playing Conqueror's Blade, grouped up with a guy from Finland and another from South Africa, and we were talking with each other as we played. It reminded me of something Dara O'Briain said during the recent British Academy Game Awards. We gamers have been socialising with people who aren't even in the same country, let alone room, for years, and we should teach others how it's done.

This is a link to my Discord server: https://discord.gg/fNbkNCk and I'm inviting everyone here to join. On Discord you will be able to talk with like-minded people, which may help to alleviate any cabin fever/stir craziness that's starting to set in.

I only have 3 rules:

-Be polite and civil.

-Speak English.

-Try to use your sumoforum.net user name.

Discord is free software you can install on a PC/Mac, have as an addon to your browser or as an app on your mobile. So, you don't have to have a headset with a mic to be able to talk, you can use your mobile.

Discord is not free software. It is non-free, closed source, and proprietary :-P. A free software VoIP client would be something like Mumble.

Hey, if Discord costs nothing to download, install and use, it's free as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, Mumble has been another popular one among gamers, as were TeamSpeak and Ventrilo before that, but the trend seems to be towards Discord recently.

Anyway, I seem to have picked an extraordinarily inactive time to get all altruistic on your asses. Even the Corona thread was inactive for 48 hours! Only one taker so far, which doesn't make for much conversation. Come on, you've nothing to lose and maybe much to gain, socially speaking.

Sorry, twice as busy as before CV19; besides, the current Forum system keeps members from having to listen to more of me than I can type.

To be clear, I'm not trying to subvert the forum system here. I don't want to be moderating a ton of written posts on my Discord server!

This is purely for members to talk to each other, if they so wish.

The fact that it is free of charge for its use makes it a freeware, not a free software (or libre). It may seem a detail for those unfamiliar with the world of software, but it is a major difference.

i've joined this server from Hungary! We might have a little problem with the time diffference though... I'm GTM +1. Usually when do you talk (if there are talks already) ? I'd love to try to make it sometime!

It does seem a little hair-splitting, but I bow to your greater knowledge. Free to use is the main message I'm trying to get across.

Three joined so far, but Wakaebala is the only one I've actually talked to. Come on, don't be shy! We're all folk with a common interest, and that's always a conversation starter.

Something else I should have added at the start: the server is up whether or not I'm online. I'm online from about 8.30am-9pm BST daily. If I'm not in the channel, you can ping me (or anyone else who's joined) by typing @ in front of my name, similar to how you would on this forum.

I've had a nice (maybe 1 hour long) chat with Mr. RabidJohn this morning, and enjoyed every moment of it! I am hoping that some of you will also find the time to join this Discord server, and I would be glad to hear other voices too!

It's not easy for me, because I'm not a native english speaker, but RabidJohn was very kind, never mentioned it, so I was able to find my words... I 'm only writing this for the sake of our international forum members. ;)

Wakaebala is too modest. His spoken English is excellent.

Besides, I'm used to playing online and conversing with English speakers from all over the world, so accents don't faze me in the least.

Just added your server. I already use Discord for my Japanese lessons, which have been forced to go online due to Covid19.
