Prefectures now decide to have sumo among the selected events in their interhigh = koukou soutai or chugaku soutai (inter middle).

In Nagasaki prefecture they apparently regret to have canceled their prefecture level interhigh tournaments. Substitute tournaments will be held for most sports, for sumo on July, 12th. https://this.kiji.is/638391550058857569?c=174761113988793844

One big high school level event, the Kanazawa tournament was canceled. It is held each year in May, 103 times so far, the first in 1915. But they are looking forward: their poster says: 365 days till the tournament https://www.advertimes.com/20200527/article314902/

 

The amateur rikishi now mostly train for the kokutai, the juniors are the other really big high school level event of the year, with qualification  for the winner to enter the All Japan. The kokutai so far has no talk about cancellation.

15 sumo club members of 2 Nagano prefectural high schools, Kiso Seiho high and Sarashina agricultural high had a joint training competition meeting on the 9th, as a substitute event for the 3rd years.

In Takaoka, Toyama, today an adult and a primary school pref. tournament had been canceled. To pray for an end to the Corona crisis, the local sumo federation held an event at the Imizu shrine, where 3 of the athletes did shiko stamping a total of 93 times - as a ceremony to drive away bad spirits.

The tournament is a kind of substitute for the kokutai juniors, with 3 high school students per prefecture (the middle school students with 2 per prefecture). Congratulations to Igarashi and Ochiai being crowned middle school and high school yokozuna. May their amateur success be replicated on the professional dohyo. Nikkan Sports ran an article (via Yahoo) interviewing Ochiai about his achievement, I thought I might share the details: 

"It would be impossible to show the strength of Tottori Johoku Sumo Club without a match this year. I aimed to demonstrate this if I were to fight a match. I had a goal in the long run, and so thought about how to achieve that even with the tournament being cancelled. [Since Grade 2] I was fascinated by how men could fight head on without any weapons. I did not know it at the time, but once I got into sumo, I felt that the former Yokozuna Kotozakura was amazing - he wasn't particularly tall or heavy, but he hit like a bull." 

Despite being a predominantly oshi-wrestler, Ochiai demonstrates a willingness to learn yotsu techniques, even showing his surprising admiration for one of yotsu's greatest masters: 

"I don't want to lose in a different way I was unaware of. My favourite rikishi is Hakuho, who boasts the most wins of all time. He is adaptive and never panics. I want to get stronger in 2021 and get ever closer to becoming a sumo monster.". 

Ochiai seems 100% Japanese and might be a possible candidate for Miyagino/Hakuho-beya, or perhaps too obvious a pick? Hakuho seems to demonstrate a keen scouting eye, but his choices tend to be a little left-field.

No surprise on Ochiai, he is very good--strong, explosive, and technically solid and usually able to get a superior grip--though can be a bit unsportsmanlike at times. Most of Hakuho's notable deshi (Ishiura, Yamaguchi, Hokuseiho, Toma) have come from Tottori Johoku, so perhaps he does have an eye on Ochiai. Still another year of high school sumo left for Ochiai though.

Runner-up was Takeda from Saitama Sakae, a smallish but quick and sharp oshi stylist, a bit like Chiyonoumi. Losing semifinalists were from Tottori Johoku and Kanazawa Gakuin (the KG guy looked at least 5 years older than everyone else).

Kototebakari's brother, Taiki, lost several rounds earlier to Hanafasu Kai, who has been mentioned a lot in this section from his younger days and is now part of a Toyo-dai affiliated high school.
