New recruits for July 2020

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Joining Kise-beya will be 18-year-old Kosei Takano (高野 弘成) from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto prefecture. He began doing sumo at the age of six. While at local Daiyon Junior High School he was part of a yusho-winning team in a Kyushu schools competition. Having moved on to Tottori Johoku High School, his 157kg frame helped him to win an individual yusho in the open weight division of a Chugoku region tournament.

He joins fellow Yatsushiro natives and Daiyon JHS alumni Takakento and Genbumaru on the ozumo dohyo.

Kise-oyakata (former Maegashira Higonoumi) visited the Mayor of Yatsushiro, Hiroo Nakamura, to announce his recruit.

The Kyokai also confirmed the official entry of a new gyoji and yobidashi, both 15 years old.

Gyoji: Shikimori Sota (式守 颯太), Isegahama-beya

Yobidashi: Takeru (天琉), Asahiyama-beya

The Kyokai have provided pictures of those two learning their jobs during the Haru basho:

New preventative measures see yobidashi and gyoji a great distance from the dohyo...

Hideo Kuwabara 桑原英男  (18. 175cm, 165kg) from Takizawa, Iwate enters Onomatsu-beya. He graduated from Tairadate high in March, a sumo stronghold. Kuwabara was 2nd in the Tohoku high school championships last year, both in the individuals and with the team. http://www.iwate-np.co.jp/article/2020/4/9/76057

with his dad at the city hall on the 8th

from local TV https://news.ibc.co.jp/item_39125.html

After graduation he had joined his father to be a wagyu farmer, but couldn't give up on sumo - he had been approached by the heya and decided to go there - on the 25th he'll enter the heya in Chiba.

Compared to the two individuals he is sitting in between, looks pretty big. I wonder which one is his father.

I think by the look of the photo and the short TV clip that his father is on the left of the photo and the gentleman on the right is from the city sumo club. The mayor is in the grey pinstripe suit, and whose shoulder is to the front left of the picture.

That was my guess, too (though I could be wrong).  Dad looks uncomfortable in a suit.  Politician looks like he woke up in one.

That is one large kid.   I hope he is still growing taller and lose some weight.

Kosei looks like he is the next Jonokuchi winner.

The Natsu basho shindeshi kensa planned for the 28th is postponed. Neither the (new) procedure nor the next date are decided yet.

The shindeshi kensa for the Natsu basho is now scheduled for May 12th - it may change depending on the situation. They had no intention to cancel it when they postponed it. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202004270000593.html

The shindeshi kensa is postponed again (not canceled - it may be that the next basho is called the Natsu basho after all, regardless when it takes place) http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2020/05/05/kiji/20200504s00005000433000c.html

He started sumo in 2nd year primary school and entered national competitions in his 3rd year middle school. The last 3 years in a row he was at the kokutai juniors. Due to Corona, Kuwabara trains at Tairadate high instead of the heya. The coach of the sumo club is close to Onosho - that was the connection to Onomatsu-beya.

His present goal is to reach makushita, and then "juryo within 5 years, like the oyakata"

What is that great Japanese phrase that translates into English as "Don't say unnecessary things!"

Now I know why they have them stick to "gunbarou" and "Yokozuna".

Kokonoe-beya expands with four new recruits. The only one I can find background on so far is Kawaguchi, who had some prefectural competition experience during his time at Kureha Junior High School.

19-year-old Kaito Furusawa (古澤 圭) from Kariya, Aichi prefecture. 180cm, 147kg.

15-year-old Tensho Takarabe (財部 天照) from Ama, Aichi. 169cm, 101kg.

17-year-old Daichi Kawaguchi (川口 大地) from Nanto, Toyama. 168cm, 120kg.

15-year-old Taiju Nakago (中郷 泰樹) from Yaita, Tochigi. 173cm, 145kg.

The date for the shindeshi kensa is now July 13th (shonichi is July 19th), as the entry check for those who intended to take part in May and for the July basho. https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2020/06/29/0013466917.shtml

Kuwabara's shikona will be Akiyoshi (秋良), the kanji are taken from the names of two sumo coaches who taught him during his school years. A more up-to-date photo from the heya:

He has visited the heya before for their kids sumo events, here he gets Wakakoyu's autograph.

Even with spectators this basho, spectator videos are still not possible, Abema is the exclusive source again - and Miselet posts it. Also a few pics from the NSK, one by Nikkan.
