Corona and sumo

One of the first Japanese celebrities to fall victim to the Coronavirus pandemic was Shimura Ken (d. March 29).  There is a growing number of YouTube videos available highlighting his comedy repertoire.  While it may have been posted previously in another thread, I feel that the following link sheds light on his comic genius.  Furthermore, it may be of interest to members of this Forum since the subject of this particular skit is life in a sumo stable.  But hopefully it will put a smile on our faces in this age of widespread lockdowns and uncertainty...

Enjoy :-)

Instead of the broadcast of the canceled Natsu basho, NHK will air an "Ozumo special basho" over a span of 3 weeks (the 3 Sundays of a basho), starting on the 24th, 15:05-17:15h JST with "Ozumo this year" from 1987 and from 2004.

Abema on the Ozumo LIVE channel will have "100 famous bouts to remember" in 3 parts.

If it's on a channel I get access to, I might just do so :-) Not the one on Abema though.

The antibody tests for all NSK members have started: today with 2 heya and 43 people. They want to continue at a pace of 2-3 heya/40-50 people per day, to finish the tests within a month. The tests are also for all heya affiliated persons, which apparently includes rikishi personal or heya managers (like ex-Ichinoya) and the okamisan - (now) not NSK members (NSK members are just a bit more than 900, the articles always talk of about 1000 tests). http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2020/05/18/0013352363.shtml

I wonder if it also includes the kids of the oyakata, who live in the same building and use to be in the  heya often.

Yesterday some papers in the fuzzy talk of Shibatayama spotted the possibility that the ban on degeiko could be lifted, o

but today the NSK declared that even if the state of emergency is declared over, no degeiko will be allowed. o

Abema has the specials on the 3 Saturdays, makuuchi time: 16-18h JST. On the 23rd "Great turnarounds at the dohyo edge", Hakuho, Asanoyama and Shibatayama take part remote, Waka will be commentating on the bouts. On the 30th "Splendid torikumi" and on the 6th "Handsome rikishi" - they want also there some high ranked rikishi as participants live from the net, surely at least the other 2:

Toyko's COVID 19 situation looks really good.   There may be a basho in July unless the situation reverts.   As we all know by now, COVID 19 has been resilient and persistent.  It has a way of coming back if social distancing isn't followed.  Stay the course, Tokyolites!

This year, due to Corona, the orders by mainly sekitori and heya for hanmono cloth with their names on have dropped by about 70%. It is in special design to make yukata as o-chugen mid year gifts to the ichimon rikishi and special koenkai members or as "uniform" for the rikishi of a heya. To reduce the visits elsewhere, one shisho of a heya has provided it for the rikishi, but not for the koenkai. Also Hakuho so far hasn't ordered. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20200523/sum20052305020001-n1.html

But Myogiryu has

as o-chugen gift for special members of the "Myogiryu club" koenkai

some also will be on sale by requests of other supporters

Shibatayama: "Till the end we hadn't abandoned hope to hold the May basho, going thoroughly through with precautionary measures, but there also was the state of emergency by the state and we gave up." In his heya, he restarted to have butsukari-geiko and moushi-ai-geiko 3 weeks ago: "I don't let the rikishi of my heya go outside, not even to the convenience store. No kid is in bad physical condition." http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202005230000427.html

Hakuho: The rikishi he'd want to have a bout with is Futabayama. http://times.abema.tv/posts/7055065

"When I get into yottsu position, none of the rikishi now is a match yet." http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2020/05/24/kiji/20200524s00005000031000c.html

"No pain at the moment. I quickly want to clash." http://times.abema.tv/posts/7055064

Asanoyama - after telling that he wants to live in the heya till he gets married, Waka asked which first: getting the tsuna (tsuna-tori, to yokozuna) or a wife (yome-tori): "Preferably both at the same time" http://times.abema.tv/posts/7055066

Terutsuyoshi today donated 20 000 masks to his hometown Minami-Awaji. The actual donation ceremony was at the city hall, but he, the hometown support ambassador no. 1, isn't allowed to leave the heya to travel there now, so his mother took part on his behalf.

The rikishi approach towards the virus shown by Kototsurugi does not look wise

But the sumo jinku text (by the former editor-in-chief of Baseball Magazine - also for sumo magazines) gives the (sung) proper sumo rules to avoid the three crowding densities - san-mitsu 3密, the onomatopoeic slogan for them in Japan is: むんむん (mun-mun -  mippei 密閉 closed environments) - ぎゅうぎゅう (gyuu-gyuu - misshuu 密集 crowded places) - がやがや (gaya-gaya - missetsu 密接 close contact)

At last this corona sumo jinku appears in song - and it is Daishi who sings and posted it

Starting with July 10th, events with up to 5000 spectators are allowed again, but Shibatayama repeated that the NSK first of all aims to have a basho in an empty hall. http://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/sports/sumou/1878633/

Today Shibatayama told that the NSK wants to make use of the results of the anti-body tests when they hold the basho. o

But at least the owner of this new channel could write that he create a video or more with videos from others channels ;)

NB : COVID19 effect.... +75% more views in the last 3 months for my channel !

Empty hall basho makes sense to me as it is not clear Tokyo will be safe to have 5000 spectator events in July.   Perhaps, holding it outside of Tokyo is a viable option if NSK wants to allow spectators?  I vote for Iwate area. :-)
