That saying has been an anachronism since the invention of the battery-run digital watch.

I still possess an analogue watch, but since I hate wearing watches it is only ever right twice a day.

They would need a few days to build the Dohyo and then go through the blessing ceremonies etc. But other than that you are right, a Tokyo basho would be very easy to run at short notice

As far as i know the Tokyo dohyo is still intact. In Tokyo the dohyo will be demolished just before the new one is set up. They could just raise it from its underground storage, apply some makeup and go on. So if it is still in good shape and they hurry up, 2 days or even 1 is possible.

There were a lot of broken watches on this one, myself included.   I predict the July basho will start as scheduled without the crowd.

The NSK wants to have in the heya:

  • the keiko ground with doors and windows open, doing the basics like shiko and teppou preferably while wearing masks (the focus rikishi the NSK shows had none http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/39860-training-pics-overview-may-2020/)
  • all with masks in the big room, where the lower ranked rikishi stay together. When taking off the mask, put it in a pouch and write the name on it
  • body temperature measured morning and evening, minute checks of physical condition
  • separately served meals (not all from the same big chanko pot), and if possible no conversation during meals

Hakuho with his Haru basho kensho earnings made a donation of 25 000 masks to health care providers in Japan and Mongolia. In his comment - like everything reported now, released by the NSK - he mentioned that he received messages from Mongolia about lack of masks, and also that there are still shortages in Japan. https://hochi.news/articles/20200511-OHT1T50082.html

"Ningen shimbo da" is also a CM slogan of the brothers Wakanohana I and Takanohana I - here a late one with the future W.III and T.II : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-SM8cBUoeo&t=16s

NSK probably needs to upgrade the guideline for higher-ranked rikishi who are more exposed to the virus.

I believe the next basho will start in July.   I also think there is a good chance that it won't finish unless Japan continues its emergency measures and/or people practice social distancing.   Re-opening Pachinko and talks of easing up won't do given the nature of the virus.

Today the message is "Stay home = ie ni iyou": Enho, Kiribayama, Takanosho, Kakuryu and out of banzuke order again Asanoyama

RIP.   What a shocker!   I wonder what this does for the July basho.

I think this brings the July Natsu basho into question. What a heart breaker.

All about 1000 NSK members are to be tested for Corona antibodies. Start of the new week tests will commence, the results are to be expected for mid June. A test of this scale is the first in the Japanese sports world. The NSK wants to learn about the scope of infection and use this for measures in connection with the opening of the next basho. https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/sports/sumo/20200513-OYT1T50254/

I look forward to the result.   I am going to guess at least 10%.

I think the Kyokai knew of the grave situation of the infected rikishi and it was the real reason for May being called off.

Anti-body testing will start early next week, but strangely the results will not be made known until the end of June...  That doesn't make a lot of sense.  The tests can probably be administered in under a week.  But the lag time between releasing the results and then the lag time before the start of the Nagoya-in-Tokyo tournament will not rule out the possibility of more infections...  If the NSK is trying to determine herd immunity, then they should focus on Takadagawa Stable.

But at the end of the day, any attempt to protect wrestlers during this pandemic is welcome.

Japan has lifted the state of emergency in most places except, Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido. A positive sign.

One of the first Japanese celebrities to fall victim to the Coronavirus pandemic was Shimura Ken (d. March 29).  There is a growing number of YouTube videos available highlighting his comedy repertoire.  While it may have been posted previously in another thread, I feel that the following link sheds light on his comic genius.  Furthermore, it may be of interest to members of this Forum since the subject of this particular skit is life in a sumo stable.  But hopefully it will put a smile on our faces in this age of widespread lockdowns and uncertainty...

Enjoy :-)

Instead of the broadcast of the canceled Natsu basho, NHK will air an "Ozumo special basho" over a span of 3 weeks (the 3 Sundays of a basho), starting on the 24th, 15:05-17:15h JST with "Ozumo this year" from 1987 and from 2004.

Abema on the Ozumo LIVE channel will have "100 famous bouts to remember" in 3 parts.

If it's on a channel I get access to, I might just do so :-) Not the one on Abema though.
