Greetings from Michigan

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I’ve been reading the forums for a while now and wanted to join in on the fun. It’s great to see a resource like this online as getting sumo related news isn’t the easiest of things to do.

I got really into sumo in 2007 while living in Japan, but after moving back to the states it got really hard to keep up with the action (and virtually impossible to watch). It wasn’t until about two years ago that I realized I could subscribe to TVJapan during the tournaments and record the action. Since then I’ve been following it closely and enjoying it. I am probably not as knowledgeable on the technical aspects and vocabulary of the sumo world but am hoping being here will bring me more up to speed.

Kotooshu is my all time favorite (hence my username) but Hokutofuji is the guy I cheer for the most now.

I am looking forward to interacting with everyone and the upcoming tournament (which can’t get here fast enough!).

Do you stay up all night to watch live, get out of bed early to watch live, or only watch recorded?  It's pretty terrible to try to catch live top-division sumo here in Michigan, and I don't try anymore.

I watch it recorded, Japan is about 9 hours ahead and I wouldn't enjoy it as much at 6am!

A fellow Michigan sumo fan! I thought I was the only one!

My routine has been to record the matches off TVJapan (both the live bouts and the daily highlights) and watch them in the evening. Usually I will just watch the 30 minute highlights but will watch the full versions when I want to see more.

Whoever designed the time zones wasn’t an American sumo fan because it’s very inconvenient. During the basho I avoid this sight until after I’ve watched the days matches which is often only a few hours before the next days begin.

There's yet another on this forum.  I won't give him away, but he's fairly active and doesn't exactly hide the fact he's from the area.
