Kimarite Statistics - 2020 Hatsu

Recommended Posts

Hello all, sorry for taking so long but here at last are the kimarite statistics for all divisions in this basho. Tokushoryu became the most unlikely Makuuchi yusho winner since Kyokutenho with an excellent performance from the very bottom of the division. Elsewhere, Hanakaze stepped onto the dohyo in a fifth different decade, while Shohoryu became the first yumitori-shiki performer to be born in the Heisei era.

Hikkake doesn't get much (if any) attention in the kimarite notes, but it did feel like there was quite a lot of arm-dragging going on during this basho, and sure enough there were eight hikkake in total. Where complete kimarite data for all divisions is available, this is only the 12th basho with that many, and the first since 2013 Kyushu. More notably, four of those hikkake were done in the Makuuchi division, one more than the previous record from 2006 Haru.

There were four kekaeshi overall in this basho, which isn't particularly interesting. However, Tobizaru got one of them by again exploiting Sokokurai's Day 14 weakness - this is the third time he's beaten Sokokurai with either kekaeshi or ketaguri on the penultimate day of a basho!

Seito could be at a new career-high rank on the next banzuke after finishing with six wins here, the fourth of which was a nimaigeri leg trip against Taranami.

After three straight losses, Shobushi kept his kachi-koshi hopes alive with a sakatottari win against Yukiumi, an uncommon departure from the oshizumo style which accounts for nearly two-thirds of his career wins.

Kawazugake drew a blank in 2019 but reappeared here on Day 9. No video of that one unfortunately.

Kakutaiki bounced back from missing the Kyushu basho with a 6-1 result here. In his last bout, veteran Satonofuji attempted an uchigake, only for the unfazed Kakutaiki to pick him up and carry him out for a tsuridashi win.

Yoshiazuma is also 42 and made his debut alongside Satonofuji in 1996 Hatsu. On Day 12 he survived Roman's desperate attempts at an ipponzeoi and finally dumped him onto the dohyo for an uwatenage win.

Kimarite from kettei-sen bouts are not included in the statistics. (Note for @Doitsuyama, the single kettei-sen bout of the basho is currently missing from the database)
