Tokushoryu yusho celebrations

Recommended Posts

Another Kindai yusho - another Kindai tuna for the winner - 47kg, worth 300 000yen - and because it's setsubun, an eho-maki with it. About 1000 were at Kindai to hear his yusho report.

After the parade he will get a 45kg kindai tuna, raised from the there spawn egg at the aquatic produce laboratory.

Do they really take photos of every makuuchi rikishi before an honbasho, just in case they win the yusho?

I believe these are official pictures they take before the basho, you have to remember that they do have pamphlets they sell at the honbasho that feature all the sekitori.

A few quick highlights (A = Araiso; T = Tokushoryu)

A) Good job boosting your likability during the yusho interview!

A) You were like a different beast during Hatsu. What happened?

T) Following the basho when I dropped from Makuuchi to Juryo, I began to doubt if I could make it back up, so I got a trainer and devoted myself again to keiko.

A) On Day 7, you found yourself tied at the top with Shodai and a few others. What was your state of mind?

T) It was good that I was tied. Had I been in the sole lead I wouldn't have been able to handle it.

A) Which match made the biggest impression on you?

T) Senshuraku and especially the 2nd to last day. It felt like a life-changing match.

A) When I won my first yusho, I had to quickly refocus on the next basho and wasn't able to fully experience the joy of the victory. But when you won, for me it was pure happiness.

A) Noting that they are the same age: "I'm already (an old) 33, but you're still (a young) 33."

A) On the traditional Tai red sea bream fish held by the winner: "I had 12 runner-up finishes, and a fish was always prepared on the last day in case I won. Every time I went back to the heya after a failed yusho attempt, it had already been turned into sashimi.

A) I admire your fashionable collection of bags!

A) Your favorite dish prepared by your wife?

T) Gapao rice.

A) Your goal for Osaka?

T) I want to do my best.

Side note: I just love how much personality Kisenosato shows now that he's retired compared to when he was active.

I wonder which other currently bland, stoic rikishi we can look forward enjoying once they've shed their shells post-retirement. Endo?
