Akinomaki 34,262 Posted January 20, 2020 Isegahama-oyakata (Asahifuji) reaches kanreki (turns 60) this year and will have his kanreki-dohyo-iri May 30th in the kokugikan, he's training for it now. The last was that of Chiyonofuji May 2015 http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/33485-kokonoe-kanreki-dohyo-iri/?page=2, but the last of shiranui style was Tachiyama in 1937. photo shoot at the basho today with some fellow kanreki-s, who got the special ticket for that and (mostly) are in proper kanreki attire for the occasion o o

Swami The way I've seen Onokuni walking around, HE is going to be lucky to get to his kanreki. Who's to say they won't get the current yokozuna to attend to him? Or they could get Harumafuji and Araiso aka Kisenosato to do it.
yohcun 364 Posted March 24, 2020 Hakuho learned his dohyo-iri style from him, right? So it wouldn't surprise me to see him. Harumafuji would be nice, but would they let someone who left sumo do it?

I remember the committee had "regret" that Harumafuji retired "on his own", as if he would not have been forced out. If that's correct, then they'd have no problem with him appearing at the dohyo-iri, right? If not, it was all bogus.

If I remember correctly, the kanreki dohyo is not sponsored directly by the NSK, it's mainly put together by sponsors. I don't think they would have a problem with it either. Swami 242 Posted March 25, 2020 Kitanofuji performed his after he had left the association (voluntarily), with Chiyonofuji & Hokutoumi as his attendants, so perhaps that would work OK, with Harumafuji participating. Yes, I agree it looks unlikely that Onokuni will be fit enough for his kanreki - although they didn't think Tochinishiki or Taiho would have completed theirs, and both did with relative ease. Well only up to a point with Taiho - it was a restricted one for him as his stroke meant he couldn’t perform a full kanreki. Akinomaki 34,262 Posted July 6, 2020 (edited) Isegahama-oyakata (Asahifuji) turned 60 today. About the dohyo-iri: "I think the prediction will be for next year. It would be fine to have it in December though." He is keeping himself fit: after dinner, each day a walk of at least 1 hour, and 5, 6 times a week 1 hour of weight training, not too heavy, to avoid injury, but at bench press he lifts 100kg or more. "I have to lose weight. For the dohyo-iri (planned for May) I gained weight. Now I'll lose weight once and when the time comes, gain it again. Not that good for your health though. If I'm too lean, the tsuna falls off." http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2020/07/06/0013487348.shtml Reaching kanreki on the same day today is sumo cartoonist Kototsurugi - for him it is easy, he draws himself a kanreki dohyo-iri. Kototsurugi got several congratulation video letters: Kotoshogiku, Kotonowaka II and KONISHIKI vid vid vid Edited July 6, 2020 by Akinomaki 3

Can’t wait to see his kanreki dohyo-iri, I hope he is able to do so soon. This yo yo weight gain/weight loss is not good for the body so the sooner he can get back to maintaining a lower weight the better. A big happy birthday to Asahifuji, and may there be many more to come.
Seiyashi 3,320 Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) Apparently Isegahama-oyakata's kanreki may be imminent, as Ajigawa-oyakata (ex-Aminishiki) tweeted a picture of a red rope being braided at Isegahama-beya today: The day before, he had posted a rather baitey photo of hemp hung out to dry, which led many to assume that that was for Terunofuji's rope. Terunofuji's tsuna-uchi may be soon, though, (maybe even later today to get two ropes for the price of one keiko-ba setup) as Isegahama surely would want his deshi to be an attendant as his kanreki dohyo-iri. We may get some nice pictures in the next few days of Isegahama in his red tsuna teaching Terunofuji the Shiranui dohyo-iri. (Update: Isegahama-beya did indeed braid two ropes today. Isegahama-oyakata spent time teaching Terunofuji the, erm, ropes of the dohyo-iri, and they posed in a picture with keshomawashi and wearing tsuna as well). Since I'm down the rabbit hole of yokozuna dohyo-iri styles, Isegahama's kanreki will only be the second kanreki to be performed in the Shiranui style since Tachiyama's (private) kanreki in 1937. Assuming that Terunofuji is the tsuyuharai and either Hakuho or Harumafuji (much less likely, but may be an outside chance) will be the tachimochi, it will also be only the second kanreki to involve two Shiranui attendants (the first being Kokonoe-oyakata's in 2015 where both Hakuho and Harumafuji were the attendants). If this last is true, then Isegahama's kanreki will be the very first kanreki in history where all participants were Shiranui yokozuna. In case anyone is wondering why the attendants aren't wearing ropes, it's because they're not yokozuna: they were disciples of Tachiyama, Tachihikari and Tachienoumi. Seregost 78 Posted July 29, 2021 I was looking some pictures about kanreki dohyo iri, and noticed that Chiyonofuji was the only one in all of them wearing a completely red tsuna. Any ideas about it?

Godango 753 Posted September 16, 2021 (edited) We need a poll on his attendants. Logic would dictate some combination of Hak/Teru, by this banzuke you'd expect Hakuho tachimochi and Terunofuji tsuyuharai. With the next banzuke not being released until 1 November that seems the likely bet. Personally though, I'd be very happy for Isegahama if he gets the Terunofuji/Harumafuji combo. Seniority amongst yokozuna (and hence who tachimochi/tsuyuharai is) isn't dictated by banzuke position at the time, but by promotion date. So if Hakuho is involved, he will always be the tachimochi unless Musashigawa, Hakkaku or Shibatayama are involved as well. The first kanreki dohyo-iri of Tochigiyama shows this: even though Akinoumi had already retired to become an oyakata and hence was nominally superior to Haguroyama, who was still active, he served as dew sweeper because he was promoted after Haguroyama. All the kanreki dohyo-iris also follow this pattern, where the first-promoted yokozuna amongst the attendants is always the tachimochi. Not a COVID kyujo, I don't think, as long as he is negative. I don't know if a nornal kyujo would - probably, especially if his mobility was affected and he couldn't do sonkyo.
