The way the other results shook out, I think 4-3 would have found him in Juryo. As it is, that (last) slot should go to Ichiyamamoto. And there are lots of candidates for the Makushita promotion zone, so the 3-4 will probably drop Roga below it, meaning he's likely to need a 7-0 in March to make Juryo. What a difference one win makes! Edited January 24, 2021 by Reonito

Katooshu 3,132 Posted January 24, 2021 My man Kitanowaka stinging me with those last 2 losses By the way, Hokutenkai has really been doing well, now within striking distance of juryo after only 10 basho.

nagora 88 Posted January 25, 2021 At what point does Hattorizakura/Shonanzakura get "fired"? I watched a couple of his bouts and he's not actually making any effort at all. The others clearly regard him with contempt - and why wouldn't they? I suppose it's an interesting thought that if I went to Japan for my 56th birthday I could enter the next honbasho and not come bottom of the heap, but still...

Someone more qualified can correct me if needed, but I've heard the stable where he resides sort of has an "accept everyone" policy. My question would be more along the lines of "why doesn't he get better/put forth more effort"? In theory he's training sumo every day. You'd think he'd at least get a little better by accident if nothing else. If he's not trying, why keep doing it?
Katooshu 3,132 Posted January 25, 2021 (edited) I grew tired of him a while ago, though he did have one of his best efforts this basho and for a moment I thought he might actually win that match. I'd respect him more if it looked like he was actually trying each match, but I very rarely see him straining or grimacing in effort. AIUI at least some of the problem is psychological. I'm sure he's trying, even if it doesn't look like it, but I don't get it either.

Tigerboy1966 1,376 Posted January 26, 2021 The Shonanzakura dilemma: the only way he can win is if an even more useless individual enters the sport BUT only one stable in sumo is likely to accept such a recruit.

Anyway, the lad clearly likes the heya life - perhaps basho are just an annoying interlude to his organised existence. Who knows, maybe he's someone who likes ritual, being told what to do and fitting in with an extended 'family'? There are people who feel very comfortable living in a regimented way - my guess is that he's one of them and actually fighting isn't necessarily his thing.

No, his only goal is to take part in ozumo as a rikishi: he loves sumo and has found a way to not only watch it, but watch it from the dohyo. He also takes care not to get injured, to be able to do this for as long as possible. 1

Yamanashi 3,724 Posted January 26, 2021 Some people are focused on the Ozumo of hate and violence, but others pursue the Ozumo of peace and love. As a proud member of the heya that turns troubled kids around, he takes injured, downcast wrestlers and keeps them on the banzuke with hugs and impeccable ring manners.

pricklypomegranate 730 Posted March 15, 2021 (edited) Hokuseiho showed up with his entire back wrapped up in bandages like a mummy. Coupled with a bottom-grade tachiai, of course he lost to Tokisakae, breaking his 21 win streak and blocking any chance at advancing to Juryo next basho. He still matches with his stablemate Enho. Really makes you wonder how the hell Enho did it, huh? Edited March 15, 2021 by pricklypomegranate
