since_94 623 Posted January 11, 2020 Here's a thread where those who are in "Sumo Town" for the Hatsu Basho can post about what's going on. It's a very bearable 6 degrees right now. People, the hardcore, were lining up for tomorrow's GA tickets as early as 530 p.m.this evening. I will soon be joining them, but it's hard to leave this warm, comfy room. 5

Eskbibs 35 Posted January 12, 2020 I came to the Kokugikan just in time to catch the juryo dohyo-iri. What excitement! Caught a few makushita bouts as well, like Naya vs. Chiyonokuni, which I didn't even know was happening! I'm having a great time and juryo has just barely begun...I can't wait for the rest.

Maybe some take shifts, but since i became interested in japan about 30 years ago i learned one thing: When you hear japanese doing something crazy, just remember these guys ride giant logs down a hill and they brought us Takeshi's Castle. Unnecessarily early, but if you're coming in from out of town or otherwise have limited transportation or scheduling options, perhaps arriving so early is the only choice. I got in line at 430a.m. and ended up being #98. Definitely saw some latecomers get shut out showing up after 6a.m. At least the wait, while chilly, wasn't bone-numbing cold. Edwardoho 17 Posted January 13, 2020 im guessing you don't need to be there so early during the week days?
since_94 623 Posted January 14, 2020 (edited) About same-day tickets: day one I lined up at 0430 and was #98. Day 2, queued at 0550 and was #155. Looked like everybody who showed up by 0730 was early enough. Day 3 tickets were still available at box office after everyone in queue got served, but they were sold out before noon. I'll report on today's situation later. Some early birds were camped out last night, but that's always the case. Fingers crossed about both Yokozuna participating. Moderators, perhaps this thread belongs in honbasho talk? Edited January 15, 2020 by Jakusotsu Done.

At the times of no sell-out, the seats in 4 person masu boxes are sold individually, box by box at first, then also the 2nd places in the boxes etc. For Tokyo it may take years till that time comes again. The masu seat level ordinary VIPs are mostly from companies, they always have someone they let the seat use. The NSK has established a resale service, this is the only official way to get a masu seat that becomes available again, but it's only feasible for a future day. Of course, you may still encounter in the vicinity people who want to sell you their ticket, but ...
since_94 623 Posted January 16, 2020 Yesterday was a sellout but the ticket window was still open well into the morning. Weather also improved after a rainy morning on Day 4.
Edwardoho 17 Posted January 18, 2020 I went down to the ticket office this morning around 8am and everything seemed to be sold out. Ticket office wasn’t even open.
since_94 623 Posted January 18, 2020 (edited) It's the weekend, Day 8, and the sunshine and blue skies have returned. A balmy 7 degrees. 5 sekitori tied for the lead, should be an interesting one. Edited January 19, 2020 by since_94
since_94 623 Posted January 20, 2020 It's another beautiful sunny day here in Sumida, and 6 degrees Celsius. Couldn't ask for better January weather. Ticket window was still open when I passed by at 0915. See you at the fights!

since_94 623 Posted January 20, 2020 I did not. Was he around? Ran into Naruto Oyakata (ex Kotooshu) though, as usual.

since_94 623 Posted January 21, 2020 Passed by the ticket window this morning and was informed that there were exactly 2 tickets remaining as of 0935. It's another beautiful sunny 10 degree day here in the center of the Sumo universe. See you at the fights. Hakkioi!
since_94 623 Posted January 21, 2020 Isegahama Oyakata ( ex-Yokozuna Asahifuji) was in attendance taking photos with fans. Aminishki was making the rounds and doing color commentary in the Abema TV booth. Musashigawa (ex-Yokozuna Musashimaru) was also spotted along with Yoshikaze. Pretty good day for stargazing and some excellent bouts including wins by...won't put spoilers here.

since_94 623 Posted January 22, 2020 Day 12 is off to a rather gloomy and rainy start, however ticket demand might be picking up as we edge closer to the tournament's climax. I lined up at 0650 and was number 178. As I was leaving at 0750 it loomed like people filing into line were getting numbers around 345. My understanding is that 400 tickets are available each day. For those keeping score, I didn't line up yesterday, but the box office was closed by 0945 when I passed by. I'm particularly keen to watch Abi vs Shodai, Takakeisho vs Tochinoshin, and Mitakeumi vs Shohozan, and of course Kagayaki vs Tokushoryu today. See you at the fights.
Kuroyama 715 Posted January 22, 2020 The NSK has just announced they're sold out for today. https://twitter.com/sumokyokai/status/1220130284525379586?s=
since_94 623 Posted January 23, 2020 Day 13, thankfully the rain is gone and it's a pleasantly mild 9 degrees. Lined up at 0650 this morning and was around number 197 (?)---I forget the exact number. Those planning to line up for weekend tickets should queue earlier because of increased demand, especially in light of the Emperor making an appearance and the basho being decided on either day 14 or 15.
